The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol requested the phone records of a security employee working for far-right radio host Alex Jones.
The investigative panel issued a subpoena to AT&T for phone records belonging to Timothy Enlow, the security operations manager of Free Speech Systems, LLC, a media company owned by Jones. The committee requested records of phone calls and text messages Enlow made between Nov. 1, 2020, and Jan. 31, 2021.
The subpoena came to light in a court document filed Tuesday by Norman Pattis, an attorney for Jones. The radio host is asking that Enlow be added to the lawsuit he filed against the committee in December that seeks to block the panel from requiring his testimony and obtaining his phone records.
The committee subpoenaed Jones in November. He spoke at rallies on Jan. 5, 2021, and Jan. 6, 2021, and helped facilitate a donation for “80 percent” of the funding for a rally taking place at the White House on Jan. 6, according to the panel.
Pattis argued in Tuesday’s court filing that the select committee “targeted Enlow to gain information and documents that they could not obtain from Jones.”
The attorney also said Jones and Enlow believe the subpoena for the latter’s phone communications is “merely a backdoor to obtain Jones’ communications in the face of pending litigation seeking to protect those communications from the Defendants’ eyes.”
“Given the broad scope of the Defendants’ investigation and their goals in pursuing information and documents from Jones and Enlow, there is a clear logical relationship between their claims because the Defendants seek to use Enlow as a gateway to Jones’ communications regarding the events of January 6, 2021 and suspect Enlow of being involved as well,” Pattis added.
Enlow has worked for Jones’s media company since December 2018, according to the court filing. Pattis said AT&T contacted him on Feb. 9 informing him that his phone records had been subpoenaed by the committee. AT&T said it would comply with the request by Feb. 23 “unless he presented them with a legal filing that asserted his rights against the production.”

Two Big Cross-Country Storms to Bring Problems in Coming Week
Mother Nature will be busy in the week ahead, as two systems will bring the chances of snow, ice, and severe weather.
At a Glance
Two rounds of snow and ice are expected across the country in the week ahead.
The first will blanket the West, northern Plains and upper Midwest early next week.
The second will bring snow and ice farther south in the Plains, then into the Ohio Valley and Northeast.
A pair of winter storms will wring out more snow and ice during the week of Presidents Day from the West to the Plains, Midwest and Northeast.
True to form for the typically busy month of February, the weather pattern is setting up for an active week ahead, with impacts over much of the country.
First, the jet stream will take another sharp southward plunge into the West early next week. A surge of energy will swing east out of that jet stream plunge early next week, followed by a second, stronger disturbance later in the week.
As that's happening, a fresh blast of Arctic cold air will plunge south from Canada into the West, central U.S. and, eventually, parts of the East next week. Each low-pressure system will pull moisture into that cold air, producing snow and ice.
As is typical several days out, there are key details that remain unclear, particularly with the second system later next week, so check back to weather.com and The Weather Channel app in the coming days for important updates as the forecast comes into focus.
For now, let's lay out what we know and don't yet know, starting with the first storm.
First Storm: Early Week
A small disturbance riding the U.S./Canada border in the Plains ahead of the big storm system. That distubance, a quick-moving clipper system for North Dakota and Minnesota, is expected to cause gusty winds and some modest snowfall through Sunday. Areas of blizzard conditions are expected along the North Dakota/Minnesota border.
Winter weather alerts are in place ahead of this first winter storm from the Cascades of Washington and Oregon to the Midwest. Conditions are expected to be worst where winter storm watches and warnings are in effect. These conditions could include dangerous driving conditions and very cold temperatures.

Sunday, snow will extend from the Cascades of Washington and Oregon through the northern Rockies. Sunday night, that snow should spread east into the northern Plains, including parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota.
Monday, snow could become heavy from parts of South Dakota into Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan while persisting in the Rockies.

Tuesday, heavy snow might persist in the upper Midwest and western Great Lakes, and is expected to spread into parts of northern New England. A band of sleet and freezing rain is possible in parts of the southern Great Lakes, upstate New York and New England.

The best chance for heavy snow with this first storm will be in parts of the Rockies, and also in a roughly west-to-east band from South Dakota to Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Michigan and northern Maine.
This includes the Twin Cities, where this longer-lived snowfall could lead to hazardous morning and afternoon commutes Monday and Tuesday.
Some accumulations of ice and/or sleet are also possible along the southern edge of the snowfall map below, generally from parts of Iowa, northern Illinois and Lower Michigan to upstate New York and northern New England.
This could lead to hazardous travel from later Monday into Tuesday night or early Wednesday.

Second Storm
As alluded to earlier, right on the heels of the early-week storm, a second winter storm is increasingly likely but may leave its snowy and icy imprint farther South. That's because Arctic cold air will be more expansive for this second storm.
By Wednesday, it will have plunged deep into Texas. And behind the first storm, some colder air will be dragged southward into at least parts of the East.
After wringing out some needed snow in the Desert Southwest and parts of California's high country, the wintry mess from this storm could begin as soon as Wednesday from parts of Kansas and Missouri into Oklahoma and northern Texas.
Thursday could see widespread snow and ice from northern Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas through the Ohio Valley, southern Great Lakes and mid-Atlantic states.
This mess could finish up in parts of the Northeast next Friday.

It's far too soon to narrow down any forecast totals for this storm, but significant snow and ice is possible from parts of the central and southern Plains into the Ohio Valley and Northeast.
The Northeast forecast is particularly tricky, dependent on the track of the second storm's low-pressure center and how stubborn the cold air remains in place and where.
Some of the same areas just hit by Winter Storm Miles this past week could see more accumulating snow or ice.

With help from machine learning software, computer scientists may have unmasked the identity of Q, the founder of the QAnon movement. In a sprawling report published on Saturday, The New York Times shared the findings of two independent teams of forensic linguists who claim they’ve identified Paul Furber, a South African software developer who was one of the first to draw attention to the conspiracy theory, as the original writer behind Q. They say Arizona congressional candidate Ron Watkins also wrote under the pseudonym, first by collaborating with Furber and then later taking over the account when it eventually moved to post on his father’s 8chan message board.
The two teams of Swiss and French researchers used different methodologies to come to the same conclusion. The Swiss one, made up of two researchers from startup OrphAnalytics, used software to break down Q’s missives into patterns of three-character sequences. They then tracked how often those sequences repeated. The French team, meanwhile, trained an AI to look for patterns in Q’s writing. Both techniques broadly fall under an approach known as stylometry that looks to analyze writing in a way that is measurable, consistent and replicable. To avoid the possibility of confusing their respective programs, the teams limited their analysis to social media posts. Among all the other possible authors they put through the test, they say the writing of Furber and Watkins stood out the most for how similar it was that of Q’s.
And they’re confident in that identification. The French team made of computational linguists Florian Cafiero and Jean-Baptiste Camps told The Times their software correctly identified Furber’s writing in 98 percent of tests and Watkins’ in 99 percent. “At first most of the text is by Furber,” said Cafiero. “But the signature of Ron Watkins increased during the first few months as Paul Furber decreased and then dropped completely.”
People have previously used machine learning software to identify Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling as the secret writer of Cuckoo’s Calling, a 2013 crime fiction novel Rowling wrote under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. More broadly, law enforcement agencies have successfully used stylometry in a variety of criminal cases, including by the FBI to show that Ted Kaczynski was the Unabomber.
Experts The Times spoke to – including Professor Patrick Juola, the computer scientist who identified Rowling as the author of Cuckoo’s Calling – told they found the findings credible and persuasive. “What’s really powerful is the fact that both of the two independent analyses showed the same overall pattern,” Juola said.
Both Furber and Watkins deny they wrote any of Q’s messages. “I am not Q,” the latter told The Times. Furber, meanwhile, said he was influenced by Q’s posts to change the style of his prose, a claim linguistic experts told the outlet was “implausible.” Also worth mentioning is the fact the analysis included tweets from Furber that date from the earliest days of Q’s existence.
What happens next is unclear. The researchers who worked on the identification told The Times they hope unmasking Q will loosen QAnon’s hold on people. Spreading like wildfire on social media, the conspiracy theory has had a profound effect on politics in the US and other parts of the world. And while Q hasn’t posted a new message since the end of 2020, that hasn’t dampened people’s enthusiasm for conspiracies about the "deep state" and its involvement in their lives.
