Nerves don't regrow, it's possible that they have gotten caught up in the meat that's healing.
Extensive research after my femoral nerve was almost totally severed. Almost paralyzed my right leg. Had a hell of a time finding a Dr skilled enough, and willing, to cut my nerve free. Pain was soooo bad I risked paralysis a second time to free the nerve.
Finally at the point I don't have to concentrate to walk, or face plant. Can actually run now.
