DWS CEO Will "Tone Down" Hyped-UP ESG Sales Pitches Amid Greenwashing Scandal(ZeroHedge)

The police raid on Deutsche Bank AG and its asset management arm, DWS Group, in Frankfurt, Germany, earlier this year was a wake-up call for the entire asset management industry because the days of exaggerating green investments in environmental, social and governance (ESG) products has come to an end.

In October, a German consumer group sued DWS for allegedly misrepresenting its green credentials in marketing materials – this is a practice known as "greenwashing."

Now Bloomberg reports CEO Stefan Hoops, who took office in June amid a greenwashing scandal, said the firm will dial back hype in ESG sales pitches.

Speaking Wednesday, Hoops said green marketing had been "exuberant" and now would be an appropriate time to "tone down" ESG investing opportunities.

Whistleblower and former DWS sustainability chief Desiree Fixler first raised questions about the legitimacy of the firm's ESG investment products in August 2021. Investigations into DWS followed shortly after that.

Hoops said he "stands by" the firm's previous ESG disclosures while authorities in the US and Germany investigate greenwashing claims.

Hoops said he's carefully reviewed how DWS arrived at previous ESG disclosures, including those made in the firm's 2020 and 2021 annual reports, which were singled out by Fixler for criticism. That review gave him "confidence" that the information contained in them was accurate at the time, though he said evolving regulation meant DWS subsequently changed how it handles ESG disclosures. -Bloomberg

The German consumer group alleges DWS told investors in marketing material that it allocates zero funds to controversial sectors such as fossil fuels, though material from the fund outlined it could include companies with up to 15% of revenue from that industry.

DWS is the highest-profile case of greenwashing in Europe. Other funds have also backed away from green hype in advertising ESG funds amid an aggressive regulatory environment.

Money managers have been waking up this year to ESG nonsense. Matt Lawton, T. Rowe Price Group Inc.'s sector portfolio manager in the Fixed Income Division, recently concluded: "It's becoming increasingly difficult to find credible sustainability-linked bonds."

TheHill (Twatt) (Arkansas town elects youngest Black mayor in US https://trib.al/rbONpvV

Voters in the small town of Earle, Ark., elected the country’s youngest Black mayor in a runoff election on Tuesday night.

Jaylen Smith, 18, is a recent graduate of Earle High School. But come January, he will be mayor of the city of Earle, where about 2,000 people live.

According to election results, Smith managed to receive 218 votes while his opponent, Nemi Matthews Sr., won 139 votes.

Smith announced his win in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

“Citizens of Earle, Arkansas, it’s official!! I am your newly elected Mayor of Earle, Arkansas,” Smith posted. “‘It’s Time to Build a Better Chapter of Earle, Arkansas.’ I would like to thank all my supporters for stepping up getting people to the polls. I am truly grateful for you all.”

WKRC reported that Smith’s focus as mayor will be on improving public safety and transportation, tearing down abandoned houses and bringing a grocery store to the city.

Matthews, who served as a street superintendent for 30 years, told WKRC that he and the 18-year-old are friends and that their families have known each other for years.

“No animosity, anything, for as me and Jaylen are concerned,” Matthews said. “Everything has been cordial. If I can help him do anything, I’ll do it, and likewise with him.”

According to Smith’s Facebook, he’s held various leadership positions throughout middle and high school, including president of his school’s student government association.

“I feel my purpose from God is to advocate for the ones that are scared and afraid to advocate for themselves,” Smith says. “The ultimate goal is to provide help, love, and care. With that being said, I am a youth leader in my community. With this position, I try to pull young adults into my program/organization and talk them into being leaders of their communities. The reason I do what I do is because I grew up loving, helping, and caring for people that find it difficult to care for themselves. I always tell people, “I believe in you.” This is meaningful to me because not many have heard this. I want everyone to know that you can do any thorn you put your mind to.”

Smith also shares that he is a special education student; at an early age, he said, he was diagnosed with a learning disability.

Jan. 6 panel eyeing Dec. 21 to release final report, chairman says

“This disability does not take away from what I am able to do,” said Smith. “In fact, it motivates me more to achieve greatness. To add, I was embarrassed of taking special education courses, but I had to realize that I can not help who I am.”

Smith said his learning disability affects his ability to achieve high scores on standardized tests, and therefore keeps him from attending prestigious colleges and universities. But, he said, he has a goal to help those around the nation.

“I went to meet with my state representative and my state senator. I have also had the opportunity to sit down and meet with the Governor of the State of Arkansas regarding the State Educational System, Student Voice, state economy, and guidance on what I do to be a mayor and a great political asset,” Smith added.

Trump hosts Mar-a-Lago event with prominent QAnon, Pizzagate conspiracy theorist(TheHill)

Former President Trump hosted a prominent QAnon and Pizzagate conspiracy theorist at his Mar-A-Lago club in Florida on Tuesday night, just two weeks after his much-criticized dinner with Ye and white supremacist Nick Fuentes.

Liz Crokin, a former journalist and celebrity gossip writer now associated with far-right conspiracy theories, spoke at a fundraiser intended to combat child trafficking, according to posts on her Telegram account.

At the event, Crokin said she discussed Pizzagate, a debunked conspiracy theory suggesting Hillary and Bill Clinton and other political elites run a child sex trafficking ring at a pizza shop in Washington.

She also discussed the fashion company Balenciaga, which has recently taken heat for a photo campaign featuring children and plush bears with BDSM accessories.

Trump, who last month declared himself a 2024 presidential candidate, made an appearance at the event.

“You are incredible people and doing unbelievable work,” he said in a video shared by Crokin. “We just appreciate you being here and I hope you’re going to be back.”

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.

Trump received backlash, including from high-ranking Republicans, for dining with Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, along with Fuentes at his Florida club last month.

Ye recently praised Hitler and Nazis after making multiple rounds of antisemitic comments and social media posts over the fall. Fuentes is a known white nationalist and Holocaust denier who has been condemned for racist and vitriolic remarks.

Crokin is an early embracer of the QAnon conspiracy theory, which alleges the world is run by a shadowy cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles and that Trump is the only one who can stop them.

In 2017, Crokin infamously picked fights with celebrities Chrissy Teigen and John Legend after she suggested the couple was part of the Pizzagate conspiracy.

Crokin, who has been banned from most social media platforms, has more than 100,000 subscribers on her Telegram channel. She is originally from Illinois and began her career as a tabloid journalist.

Lawmakers face closing window to pass landmark bipartisan marijuana bill(TheHill)

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., speaks during a Senate Foreign Relations committee hearing on the Fiscal Year 2023 Budget in Washington, Tuesday, April 26, 2022.

Lawmakers are facing a rapidly closing window to get key marijuana legislation across the finish line in the lame-duck session.

Despite fetching broad bipartisan support in the House and Senate, opposition from GOP leadership and a tightening timeline is chipping away at the bill’s chances of passage.

The measure, called the SAFE Banking Act, would undo federal restrictions that discourage banks and other financial institutions from offering services to legally operating cannabis businesses.

Supporters say the bill is desperately needed to crack down on persistent robberies of cannabis businesses, which are forced to carry huge amounts of cash, as well as make it easier for those companies to secure loans at reasonable rates.

But with little legislative time left on the calendar, supporters of the bill, which has passed the House seven times, are divided over how to pass it before January. And they fear it’s even less likely to pass in a divided Congress.

“We still got amendments on the floor. We still got a continuing resolution,” Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), who has also been leading efforts pushing the bill in the upper chamber, told The Hill on Wednesday. “We may have an omnibus. Not giving up on this Congress.”

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), a lead negotiator for the bill, told The Hill on Tuesday that he’s hopeful the measure will be attached to a potential government funding omnibus that members on both sides want to see pass before year’s end.

“We’ve got nine [GOP] co-sponsors and probably some other Republicans who support it that aren’t on the bill. So, there’s some support for it,” Daines said.

But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) opposed efforts to link the bill to the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) – which many Republicans, including the banking bill’s cosponsors, agreed with.

“We get a lot of bad legislation when we do that, and the bad outweighs the good,” Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), one of the co-sponsors for the marijuana banking bill, told The Hill. “So, I don’t want it on the omnibus, and I don’t want non-defense items hooked to the NDAA.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D), another co-sponsor, told The Hill that he’s hopeful to see the bill finally pass in the coming weeks, but added it’s “hard for me to see a path this year.”

“We’re gonna have to spend some time, I think, just talking to people, and some people don’t have to come around. You know, you don’t need unanimity,” Cramer said, acknowledging “just the subject matter itself” makes some members “very uncomfortable.”

Though the bill has Republican backers even outside those co-sponsoring the measure, there is still pushback within the caucus, party members say. Among the loudest has been McConnell, who this week knocked the bill as a measure that aims to make “our financial system more sympathetic to illegal drugs.”

“I’m for the SAFE Banking Act, but there’s a lot of resistance in our conference and it’s come up in two different meetings this week,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who is retiring at the end of the year, told The Hill, “and, I’m not sure how close to evenly divided we are, but we’re pretty divided.”

Blunt, who serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee, also cast doubt on the chances of the bill being attached to any omnibus this month, saying it’s up to the “final negotiators to decide if it costs votes on the package are not.”

Pressed about how McConnell’s support impacts his push for the marijuana banking bill to pass in the current congressional session, Daines said he thinks McConnell is “listening and we’re gonna see where it all goes here in the next couple of weeks.”

The Department of Justice created another hurdle for the SAFE Banking Act when it released a memo Friday saying the bill might need to undergo technical changes so that it doesn’t complicate investigations into drug crimes.

Some Republicans have punted blame to the other side of the aisle for not bringing up the bill sooner.

The bill was included in last year’s House-passed NDAA, but Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) stripped it out because it didn’t include any measures to address damage done to minority communities by the war on drugs.

President Biden in October pardoned those with simple marijuana convictions, but the order will only apply to a few thousand people who were convicted with federal charges.

As the vast majority of marijuana convictions come at the state level, Democrats want to combine SAFE Banking with the HOPE Act, a bipartisan proposal that would incentivize states to expunge cannabis convictions.

Meanwhile, Republicans want to include the GRAM Act, which would allow individuals with a cannabis conviction in weed-legal states to purchase firearms.

The cannabis industry is urging Congress to pass SAFE Banking in the lame duck session, arguing that while it enjoys substantial GOP support, Republican leaders would not prioritize its passage after the House flips to Republican control.

“We remain optimistic that we’ll see cannabis reforms appear in another legislative vehicle in the coming weeks,” U.S. Cannabis Council CEO Khadijah Tribble said in a statement.

The banking industry is also lobbying for the bill. The Independent Community Bankers of America commissioned a Morning Consult poll showing that nearly two-thirds of voters support allowing cannabis businesses to access banking services in weed-legal states.

“This legislation enjoys strong, bipartisan support, would resolve a conflict between state and federal law, and addresses a critical public safety concern. We urge its enactment without further delay,” read a recent letter to Senate leaders from the community bankers’ group and 44 state banking associations.

As Twitter Goes, So Goes a Revival of the Neighborhood It Helped Transform(SFStandard)

The corner of Market and 10th streets, smack-dab in the heart of San Francisco’s main business district, was for many decades a forlorn cityscape of half-empty buildings, struggling storefronts and troubled people living on the streets.

Soon a transformation was underway: The dilapidated Fox Plaza was renovated; luxury apartment towers sprouted to serve the new workforce; retailers and fellow tech firms flowed into neighboring buildings. Sales tax revenue in the two zip codes that include Mid-Market rose from about $30 million in 2010 to nearly $42 million in 2019.

Much of that changed rather abruptly in 2011, when a tax break for companies that moved to the Mid-Market neighborhood landed Twitter—then a startup with lofty dreams of democratizing speech—in a hulking former furniture showroom at 1355 Market St.

The boom times created new problems around displacement and gentrification, but the city’s bet on incentives was a success—at least by its own standards. Twitter and its cohort helped pave the way for a parabolic tech boom that turned SF into one of the wealthiest cities in the world.
