Sri Lanka tops the list of nations that may host a Chinese naval base in the coming years as Beijing seeks to expand its maritime capabilities, according to a new report.
The South Asian nation’s Hambantota port is the most likely spot for a base given the US$2.19 billion China has already invested there, according to an assessment by the AidData research project at William & Mary university in Virginia.
Sites in Equatorial Guinea, Pakistan and Cameroon were listed as the next possibilities over the next two to five years.
"China’s single largest port investment anywhere is at Hambantota, and Beijing exercises direct control over the facility," said AidData, which released the report on Thursday. "Coupled with its strategic location, the popularity of China among elites and the population, and Sri Lanka’s alignment with China in UNGA voting, Hambantota is our top candidate for a future base."
For years, observers have tried to parse the extent that China uses its economic clout to advance its military ambitions. The Asian nation has the world’s largest navy by number of warships, and its construction and engineering companies are busy building port facilities around the world. It provided loans and grants worth nearly $30 billion from 2000-2021 to build or expand 78 ports in 46 countries, the AidData report said.
Despite frequent speculation about Chinese bases in the works, Beijing has established just one overseas military facility, in the East African nation of Djibouti. AidData said China invested $466 million in the Djibouti facility from 2000-2021, placing it No. 12 on its list.
AidData also said that China could pursue a base in Gwadar, Pakistan, citing the two nations’ close ties. The report also found a high concentration of Chinese port investments in Africa, ranking Bata, Equatorial Guinea, as the second most likely spot for a naval base after Beijing committed $659 million to a port there.

Poland recorded significant overcapacity in manufacturing industry, BIP reported.
The country's key industries are experiencing a huge shortage of orders.
The biggest problems are observed in sectors: leather and fur processing (73.3%), coke and fuel production and energy (73.6%) and metallurgical industry (73.7%).
One of the main problems is energy prices. And also products getting more expensive to produce due to the payment for CO2 emission rights (now the highest in the EU).
In addition, with declining household incomes and high inflation, fuel sales fell by 15% in the first half of the year, and in June they were down 8.3% year-on-year.
So, due to the combination of these, companies are preparing to lay off employees and cut costs in every way possible.

CIG Counter Intellegence (T.me) The European Parliament narrowly passed a few weeks ago, a law which aims to destroy land improvement on the continent made after 1952.
The law is the brainchild of Dutch politician, Frans Timmermans, a notorious climate change activist.
Why is this law relevant for Romania? Most of the land improvement in Romania was made after 1952 and this law would force the Romania to return to the 1950s literally, to a de-industrialised state, a net-importer of energy and generally speaking, to the poor agricultural society it was for centuries.
The new initiative of the EU aims to destroy things such as hydropower dams built after 1952 because they have damaged/altered the environment. This would include the majority of the dams built in Romania including the two massive dams on the Danube (Iron Gates) built in collaboration with Yugoslavia during the 1970s. These dams represent Romania’s cornerstone in its energy independence.
The law would also destroy the Lake Bicaz/Izvorul Muntelui, an artificial lake on the Bistrița river as a result of another dam completed in the ‘60s and many, many other dams on Romania’s rivers like Vidraru, Siriu, Vidra, Stânca-Costești, Strejești etc. As of 2013, hydroelectricity accounted for 27% of Romania’s energy consumption.
In addition to the EU destroying Romania’s hydropower abilities for the sake of the environment, a dozen or so nearly completed dams which were left abandoned after 1989 due to the new environmental concerns of the new democratic governments during the 1990s which were eager to gain the favour of EU politicians will also be dismantled.
Bucharest is also under threat. Lacul Morii, an artificial lake north-west of Bucharest finished in 1986 stands to be destroyed under the EU’s new law. Back then, Nicolae Ceausescu created the lake to act as Bucharest’s flooding defense. The Dâmbovița river would repeatedly overflow during the spring as a result of snowmelt and rains and it would flood the Bucharest metro and sometimes even the streets. The lake acts as a man-made barrier for the excess water coming from the mountains and has prevented major floods from crippling the metro system which is used by at least 200k people a day. With the lake disappearing the flooding of the metro will likely become the norm in most of the spring, autumn and winter as Bucharest was historically built over a marsh. During the construction of the metro, the engineers and workers had a difficult time dealing with the constant flooding of the tunnels they were digging near the Dâmbovița river.
One last big casualty of the law is the Great Brăila Island, an island in the middle of the Danube near the city of Brăila. Historically the island was a marshy area which remained uninhabited and unused for most of its history, until the 1950s when the communist authorities drained the swamp and used it for cultivation. It has some of the best soils in all of Europe, prompting an Emirati businessman in 2018, to buy 57k hectares of land on the island.

BlackRock revealed in their 2023 Outlook that "only a deep recession can effectively decouple the global economy from the risks of persistent inflation." The Fed continues to believe in the Phillips Curve, which plots unemployment as inversely related to inflation. A meaningful decline in inflation cannot be achieved without a correspondingly meaningful rise in unemployment, i.e. a recession.
The Fed must and therefore will engineer The Mother of All Pain Trades, wreaking havoc on an estimated $5.3 trillion in private debt eligible to be refinanced by 2025.
We see the following sequence of events as the path the Fed will most likely take towards the inevitable recession over the next one-to-three years:
1) The Mother of All Pain Trades
2) Deep Pain, Deep Recession
3) Mechanics of the Curve
4) Benchmark Rate
5) Debt
6) Maturity Wall
7) Timing the Break
And estimate that the recession will arrive in the second half of 2025 or 2026.
