Prosecutors are recommending a prison sentence for a former Republican candidate for Michigan governor who pled guilty to a misdemeanor for his participation in the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot.
Ryan Kelley's arrest in 2022 gave his campaign a burst of notoriety in a conservative multi-candidate field, but he ended up finishing far behind other supporters of former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary election. Tudor Dixon won the Republican primary but ultimately lost to incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Prosecutors, citing Kelley's lack of remorse, are urging a judge to lock him up for 3 months when he returns to a Washington court Oct. 17.
In July, Kelley, pled guilty to a charge of illegally entering a restricted area. His attorney Gary Springstead said probation, not prison, is an appropriate sentence.

Rachel Powell, was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in federal prison after being convicted of encouraging violence against law enforcement and using weapons to break windows in the Capitol.
Judge Lamberth found Powell, 43, of Grove City, guilty of all counts against her, including civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building and destruction of government property.
After imprisonment, Powell will serve 3 years of supervised release. She was ordered to pay $2,753 in restitution and a $5,000 fine.
Lamberth allowed Powell to remain free on bond and self-report to begin serving her sentence after Jan. 5.
