Seattle considers excusing misdemeanors, including assault, for homeless, drug addicts

Seattle's City Council is mulling a new criminal code regulation that would make it the first municipality in the nation to excuse misdemeanor crimes if they can be linked to poverty, addiction or mental disorders.

The proposal excludes misdemeanors related to domestic violence and impaired driving.

JASON RANTZ: PORTLAND AND ANTIFA'S OCCUPIED ZONE – IT'S CHAZ, THE SEQUEL. HOW WILL IT END?

Proponents like Anita Khandelwal, the top public defender for King County, which includes Seattle, say the current system isn't working for both offenders and victims.

“It’s meeting nobody’s needs,” she argued, according to KUOW. “This is not that we don’t care about the business community or about people who have experienced harm. It is that we know that this process – this processing of human beings through the system – is harmful to our clients and again very racially disproportionate, and also not getting business owners what they need either.”

Khandelwal also suggested the creation of a public fund for restitution, to compensate theft victims even if the offender cannot pay them.

However, opponents argue codifying the policy would open the proverbial floodgates.

“It sends this powerful signal that as city government, we don’t really care about this type of criminal behavior in our city,” former Seattle City Councilmember Tim Burgess told reporters.

Crime has been up in the Pacific Northwest metropolis since this summer's Capitol Hill Occupied Zone protests, which saw a 525% spike, according to Democratic Mayor Jenny Durkan.

The Emerald City's homeless population has grown by over 5% since 2019, according to recent King County data. At least 26% of those tallied are living with addiction or mental health problems.

THIS is what undermining democracy looks like. Democrats want to punish the few courageous Republicans we have left for filing a good faith amicus in support of upholding the Constitution and the rule of law.

House Democrat Calls To Exclude 126 Republicans From Next Congress For Supporting Texas Lawsuit

TOPLINE Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) on Friday urged House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to refuse to seat any of the 126 Republican House members who signed an amicus brief supporting a lawsuit aimed at overturning the results of the presidential election.

KEY FACTS

Pascrell, who has been among the most vocal proponents in Congress of investigations into President Trump, called on Pelosi in a letter to “exclude” any members who signed the brief, claiming they want to “tear the United States government apart.”

Pascrell cites Section 3 of the 14th amendment – which states that anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” cannot serve in federal office – claiming the lawsuit seeks to “obliterate public confidence in our democratic system” and that those who signed it committed “unbecoming acts that reflect poorly on our chamber.”

The lawsuit the Republicans are supporting, brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and backed by 17 Republican attorneys general, asks the Supreme Court to invalidate electors in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan based on fraud claims already rejected by lowerthe courts numerous times.

The Republicans who signed the brief include House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and incoming House GOP Conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson, who is spearheading the effort.

Pelosi herself has signaled firm opposition to the Trump-backed effort, calling it “an act of flailing GOP desperation, which violates the principles enshrined in our American Democracy” in a letter to Democratic colleagues.

"Republicans are subverting the Constitution by their reckless and fruitless assault on our democracy,” Pelosi added in the letter, which was released after Pascrell’s, though she did not say whether she would heed his calls.

Forbes has reached out to Pelosi and Johnson for comment.

Air Force Identifies Pilot In Fatal Fighter Jet Crash As Capt. Durwood ‘Hawk’ Jones

December 12, 2020

The Wisconsin Air National Guard identified the pilot who crashed earlier this week as Captain Durwood Jones.

On Tuesday evening, the F-16 fighter jet, which was part of Wisconsin’s 115th Fighter Wing, went down in the Hiawatha National Forest in Northern Michigan. According to reports, the crash claimed the life of the sole pilot flying the aircraft.

“The Fighter Wing and the Wisconsin National Guard are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” Wing Commander Col. Bart Van Roo stated. “Our dedication to duty and the training that is required of this job develops a bond that is like no other.”

He added that the loss of a member is a very difficult thing for such a committed group of professionals.

According to the Air Force, 37-year-old Jones joined the Air National Guard in 2011 and was described as a ‘decorated combat veteran,’ having been deployed to Japan, Korea and Afghanistan.

The New Mexico native was reportedly flying a routine training mission when he crashed. He’s survived by his wife and two children.

Was this really a 'routine training mission'?

The 2018 National Emergency Executive Order that Trump signed is similar in power to the National Emergency that Bush signed after 9/11.

Trump may think election fraud is just as serious as 9/11 was.
