Only total solar eclipse of 2020 thrills spectators in South America
The only total solar eclipse of 2020 dazzled spectators in South America, and some lucked out even as overcast skies threatened to put a damper on an incredible celestial event.
The so-called Southern Cone has now been treated to two total solar eclipses in back-to-back years. But each event was unique. Both eclipses were visible in Chile and Argentina, but the 2019 total solar eclipse happened in the wintertime for the Southern Hemisphere and in the late afternoon. This meant that the sun was low on the horizon, so the sky didn't get as dark as it did this year.

US regulators open privacy probes into tech giants
The US has ordered nine tech companies including Amazon, Facebook and TikTok to hand over information as part of a new review of consumer privacy. The study is intended to help regulators understand what data the companies collect and how that information is used, especially to target children.
It is the latest effort by the US government to respond to concerns about tech giants' influence. The companies have 45 days to comply. Officials on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a federal regulator focused on consumers, voted 4-1 to launch the inquiry. "It is alarming that we still know so little about companies that know so much about us," the four commissioners supporting the move said in a statement. "Given how much these companies rely on the organization and analysis of data as a core underpinning of their business models, we expect that compliance with this order will be expeditious and comprehensive."
The nine social media and video streaming companies include Facebook and its subsidiary WhatsApp, YouTube, China's ByteDance, owner of TikTok, Amazon's Twitch, as well as Snap, Twitter, Reddit, and Discord. "We're working, as we always do, to ensure the FTC has the information it needs to understand how Twitter operates its services," a Twitter spokesperson said.
The other companies did not immediately comment.

Attorney General William Barr resigns, effective Dec. 23
Attorney General William Barr will depart the Trump administration before Christmas, President Donald Trump said Monday.
The widely anticipated departure of Barr, the head of the Department of Justice, came just moments after President-elect Joe Biden’s victory over Trump was formalized by the Electoral College.
Trump, who is refusing to concede the race to Biden, announced Barr’s decision and shared his resignation letter on Twitter.
“Just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House,” Trump said in a pair of tweets. “Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job!”
Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen will serve as acting attorney general following Barr’s departure, Trump said in the tweets. Richard Donoghue, former US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, will take over Rosen’s role as the No. 2 official at the Justice Department, Trump wrote.
Barr in early December directly contradicted Trump when he revealed that the Department of Justice had not found any evidence of large-scale voter or election fraud that would overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s projected victory.
That admission during an interview with the Associated Press undercut the president, who has refused to concede to Biden and is falsely claiming he won the election, citing an array of unproven fraud conspiracies and asserting the race was “rigged” against him.
The admissions from Barr also sharply undermined the legal efforts from lawyers on the Trump campaign to reverse Biden’s wins in key swing states.

Ghislaine Maxwell Proposes $28.5 Million Bond As She Again Seeks Freedom
Ghislaine Maxwell again asked to be released from jail while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges, proposing a $28.5 million bond that she claims will ensure she doesn’t flee.
Maxwell, 58, has been jailed since she was arrested on July 2 at her estate in Bradford, New Hampshire. U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan rejected Maxwell’s initial offer to post a $5 million bond and submit to house arrest, ruling that her “extraordinary” financial resources and “international ties” presented a risk she would flee. “Ms. Maxwell is proposing an expansive set of bail conditions that is more than adequate to address any concern regarding risk of flight and reasonably assure Ms. Maxwell’s presence in court,” her lawyers said in a legal brief.
Maxwell, an Oxford-educated former British socialite, holds citizenship from France, which doesn’t extradite its citizens. Her lawyers say she should be released to help prepare to defend the charges. They claim she’s vulnerable to infection with Covid-19 if she remains jailed, and that she’s been mistreated. Maxwell’s bond request was filed under seal in Manhattan federal court on Dec. 8 and is now public, with redactions. Her legal team claimed that people willing to co-sign Maxwell’s bond “have been physically stalked by members of the tabloid press and have had paparazzi jump out of bushes and in front of their cars to snap pictures of them.”
Nathan has rejected Maxwell’s request for a closed hearing. Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to the charges that she trafficked girls with her former boyfriend, money manager Jeffrey Epstein.
Epstein was arrested last year, and his subsequent death in a Manhattan lockup was ruled a suicide.
