Chinese envoy defends ‘panda huggers’ and blames media over ‘totally ridiculous’ concerns

WILL GLASGOW - MARCH 2, 2021

A senior Chinese diplomat in Canberra has blamed the Australian media and “totally ridiculous” security concerns for the breakdown in Australia’s relationship with China.

Addressing an audience of business people at a Chinese Lunar New Year dinner, China’s deputy head of mission Wang Xining said the rising power would remember who was on its side during the bilateral dispute.

“History will prove that it is wise and visionary to be China’s friends,” said Minister Xining in the first lengthy address given by China’s embassy in Canberra since he spoke at the National Press Club six months ago

Mr Wang also delivered a warning to those “people in Australia [who] choose to make enemies to sustain a living”.

“Those who deliberately vilify China and sabotage the friendship between our two countries … will be [cast] aside in history,” he said.

“Their children will be ashamed of mentioning their names,” he said, according to a transcript of the speech posted on the Embassy’s website.

The combative speech – given on Thursday night at Ruby Chinese, a restaurant in Dickson that was once owned by the father of movie star Jackie Chan – is the latest public intervention by China’s Canberra embassy since the already strained bilateral relationship spiralled to historic depths last April after the Morrison government called for an inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus without forewarning their Chinese counterparts.

Weeks after Foreign Minister Marise Payne first called for the inquiry on the ABC’s Insiders show, China’s ambassador Cheng Jingye gave an interview in which he warned of a boycott of Australian beef, wine and universities.

‘Rift will hurt millions’

In late August — by which time Beijing had imposed a crippling 80 per cent tariff on Australian barley exports to China, suspended multiple beef abattoirs and threatened huge tariffs for Australian wine – Minister Wang gave a relatively conciliatory speech about the frayed relationship, which he compared to marriage.

“While a rift between husband and wife hurts one family, a rift between two countries will hurt millions,” he said in August.

The next day, the Morrison government revealed legislation that allowed the federal government to rescind Victoria’s Belt and Road deal.

In November, diplomats at China’s embassy in Canberra circulated a list of 14 grievances with Australia, which included restrictions on Chinese investment, the ban on Huawei’s involvement in the 5G network and investigations into foreign interference.

By the end of 2020, more than $20b of annual Australian exports to China — over 10 per cent of the total — had been banned or interfered.

Minister Wang’s latest speech — titled “It Is So Difficult to be China‘s Friends in Australia Today” — was given at a dinner held by the ACT branch of the Australian China Business Council.

The Chinese diplomat said many of the business association’s members understood his country better than most Australians.

“Maybe you don’t fully agree with our model of governance and administration, but at least you respect and understand the reason behind our development path and model of governance.”

Media blamed for bad sentiment

Minister Wang said much of the bad sentiment in Australia towards China was the media’s fault.

“If these people are immersed by those negative portraits of China by the major media outlets and brainwashed by the vulgarised and simplified political slogans, how would they understand China and agree with your assessment and impression of China.”

He said it was now a “really difficult time to be China’s friend in Australia”.

“Currently, the friends of China are given a nickname ‘panda-hugger’. It used to be a word of appreciation but now it carries derogatory meanings. It seems that being friendly to China, to be a friend of China becomes a sin and mistake in Australia.”

In addition to the media, Minister Wang said the bilateral relationship had been undermined by the suspicions of “a small number of people”, who he did not name.

“The excuse for such suspicion is China’s threats to Australian sovereignty and security, which is totally ridiculous. Because up to today no one single case has been substantiated or supported by evidence,” he said.

“And based on my observation, most of those people are siphoning off Australia’s financial coffer, and they squander on the cornucopia which is the hard-won product of the majority of Australian labour force.”

“When these people were barking loud, our friends had to bite the bullet,” he added.

Farage: Far from Opening Up, We’re Locking Down, as 600,000 Pinged by NHS App

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has said that since ‘Freedom Day’ on Monday, England appears to be locking down rather than opening up, as hundreds of thousands of Britons are told to quarantine after being pinged by the NHS coronavirus app.

The National Health Service app alerts users if they have been in proximity to anyone, also with the phone app, who has tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus and instructs them to self-isolate. Recent weeks have seen an increasing number of people told to quarantine, giving rise to the term ‘pingdemic’. In the first week of July, the NHS app pinged more than 500,000 people; the following week, 600,000.

The pingdemic has resulted in staff shortages, including at petrol stations and supermarkets, with reports across the country of empty shelves, prompting Tobias Ellwood MP, the chairman of the defence select committee, to state that the army could be used to help if staff shortages continue.

“The urgency of staff shortages now impacting on supermarkets and, by extension, national food distribution, warrants a Cobra meeting today for which the deployment of the army to assist in HGV driver shortfall should be a last-resort option considered,” Mr Ellwood said on Thursday, according to The Times.

There are also staff absences in police forces, public sanitation services, and railway network control centres, including signallers.

Responding to the surge in self-isolation being prompted by the NHS app, Mr Farage said during his GB News evening programme on Thursday: “What a mess the whole thing is! I thought, with the early vaccine rollout, not only had Brexit been fully vindicated but that we put ourselves in a very advantageous position compared to other countries.”

Remarking on the hundreds of thousands advised to self-isolate this month, Farage said: “Far from opening up, we’re actually beginning a process of lockdown down. If we go on at this rate, goodness knows where we’ll be.”

Unlike orders from the NHS’s Test and Trace team, it is not a legal requirement to self-isolate if pinged by the app, with some employers reportedly instructing their staff to ignore the alerts if a PCR test shows a negative result. However, ministers have told Britons to follow the app’s orders to isolate for 10 days.

Reports also suggest that people are deleting the app in order to avoid being pinged, with a YouGov poll finding this week that 52 per cent of young people have either deleted the app or refused to use it when they should have, such as switching off the Bluetooth or avoided checking in to venues with the QR code. The poll found, as per the reports from The Times, that of the people that downloaded the app in the first place, 10 per cent have deleted it.

“Is it time to scrap the app?” Farage said. “I think it really is.”

“I think the app is now doing more harm than good,” he added.

How double-jabbed PIERS MORGAN caught Covid in Wembley chaos: Star reveals in Mail On Sunday his week of misery after virus controls collapsed at Euros final

Piers Morgan has revealed that he caught Covid. during the crowd chaos that marred Wembley's Euro Championships final - despite being double-jabbed.

In a powerful account for tomorrow's Mail on Sunday, the 56-year-old broadcaster - one of the strongest critics of the government's pandemic policies - describes how the virus triggered a raging fever, chills and violent coughing and sneezing fits before leaving him exhausted and fearful of what might be to come next.

His account reveals his belief that he caught the Indian – or Delta - variant of the virus while watching England's defeat to Italy a fortnight ago, despite official assurances that only fully vaccinated spectators, or those with negative tests, would be admitted to the stadium.

I wouldn’t sign a China trade deal now: Tony Abbott

Latika Bourke - July 28, 2021

London: Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told a British audience that there is no way he would sign a trade deal with China today.

Speaking alongside his new boss, the UK Secretary for Trade Liz Truss, the former prime minister said Australia had indulged in “wishful thinking” to believe that the Chinese would become “more like us” as a result of more global economic integration.

As prime minister, Abbott struck the China-Australia free trade deal in 2014 and lauded it as one of his government’s biggest achievements in office.

The agreement was announced with much fanfare when Xi Jinping visited Canberra in 2014 to address a joint sitting of Parliament and was hailed as far more ambitious than insiders had expected.

Abbott said Xi’s promise to Parliament of democracy in China by mid-century had been proven hollow.

“I certainly think it’s been a hell of a wake-up call,” Abbott told the Westminster think tank Policy Exchange. “I don’t think we’ve changed, I think the Chinese government and its actions have changed.”

“I can’t imagine that China and Australia would contemplate concluding a trade deal today, notwithstanding the deal that my government did in 2014, which did produce a big increase in their exports to us but an even bigger increase in our exports to them.

“Because it is hard to trust a country that uses spurious pretexts to block our exports to punish policy positions it doesn’t like.”

He said that when the agreement was struck, the government held a “very benign view of China.”

“In retrospect, it looks like wishful thinking but at the time we were confident that there would be slowly, not just economic, but political liberalisation in China … and that China, in a sense, would become more like us.”

“Perhaps we’ve become more like them in fact, in some ways,” he remarked, before laughing.

Abbott’s comments are likely to be closely watched in Britain where he sits on the Board of Trade, having been appointed to the role last year by Truss - a prominent Brexiteer.

Britain has been keen to strike new deals now it has left the European Union but has only struck one with Australia.

However, an agreement with the United States is unlikely in the short term and there is mounting resistance within the government against any moves to deepen trade links with China following the pandemic.

Truss, a known hawk on China policy, struck a careful tone when asked if greater Chinese economic investment was akin to a Trojan Horse.

“What I think is important is that we work with our like-minded allies to challenge the unfair practices,” Truss said.

“I believe there are currently practices going on, particularly in global trade that need to be challenged, I think it’s right that we deal with it on a practical level,” she added, when pressed.

Wine hit laid bare in new report

China’s tariffs against Australia, imposed during the fallout over the WHO inquiry into the pandemic, amount to billions of dollars in lost trade.

Australia is taking China to the World Trade Organisation, denying Beijing’s accusations of dumping - where goods are deliberately sold at lower value to flood foreign markets.

Under the agreement Abbott struck with Xi, tariffs on Australian wine fell to zero in 2019, spurring an increase in Australia’s share of Chinese wine imports from 28 per cent to 37 per cent in a single year.

Between 2015 and 2020, Australian wine exports to China doubled. But that all came to a halt when in March, China announced tariffs of between 116 to 219 per cent on Australian wine for five years.

A new report from ABARES, Australian wine in China: Impact of China’s anti-dumping duties said Australian exports of bottled wine to China are expected to cease as a result of the average 167 per cent anti-dumping duty.

It said that the impacts would be felt most in the short-term because of the time it takes to develop new markets for the wine that was intended for China.

But even by 2025, the report predicted that only 60 per cent of wine exports destined for China would be sold in new markets.

It said the gross value of wine production would be $480 million in 2025 with grape growers suffering a $67 million hit for growers in the Riverina, Victoria’s north-west and South Australia’s southeast.

Piers Morgan Calls For Unvaccinated to be Denied Medical Treatment

One step away from round-ups.

Professional attention-seeker Piers Morgan is leading the charge for unvaccinated people to face state-sanctioned discrimination after he asserted that those who haven’t had the COVID jab should be denied medical treatment.

Yes, really.

“Those who refuse to be vaccinated, with no medical reason not to, should be refused NHS care if they then catch covid,” tweeted Morgan. “I’m hearing of anti-vaxxers using up ICU beds in London at vast expense to the taxpayer. Let them pay for their own stupidity & selfishness.”

Morgan failed to mention that those who have chosen not to take the vaccine also pay for the NHS through their taxes.

He subsequently called those who haven’t taken the shot “incredibly stupid and deeply depressing,” asking, “What the f*ck is wrong with you????”

He subsequently called those who haven’t taken the shot “incredibly stupid and deeply depressing,” asking, “What the f*ck is wrong with you????”

Essentially, Morgan is arguing that people who refuse to allow themselves to be injected with vaccines linked with innumerable side-effects to ward off a virus for which they have a 99.8 per cent survival rate should be left to die in order to save money.

If enacted, his ‘solution’ would also end up killing people who are admitted to hospital for ailments that have nothing to do with COVID, given that positive tests in hospitals are counted as COVID admissions even if the person is asymptomatic and is being treated for a non-COVID illness.

As we have repeatedly stressed, a two-tier society is now being created where discrimination targeting the unvaccinated is becoming not only normalized but encouraged.

Morgan is about one step removed from openly calling for the unvaccinated to be rounded up and incarcerated in medical prison camps.

An added irony to his faux-populist authoritarianism is that Morgan himself has been caught repeatedly flouting the same COVID-19 rules that he aggressively demands be imposed on everyone else.

LONDON:"British defense and aerospace company Meggitt has agreed to a £6.3 billion (U.S. $8.8 billion) takeover by Parker Hannifin. It’s the second time in recent weeks a major British defense company has been targeted by an American rival in a merger bid. Meggitt announced Aug. 2 that it had recommended the bid by Cleveland-based Parker Hannifin but only after the U.S. company agreed to contractual commitments ensuring, for the time being, Meggitt retains a significant presence in the U.K.

Concerns are growing in the U.K. about the future ownership of the local aerospace and defense sector in the face of takeover bids from foreign companies. In June, electronic warfare and sonar specialist Ultra Electronics was the subject of a takeover bid from Cobham, which is owned by a U.S. private equity firm.

Meggitt had revenues of $2.3 billion in 2020 and employs about 9,000 people globally. Some 46 percent of its revenues are generated from the defense sector. The acquisition of Meggitt nearly doubles the size of the U.S. company’s aerospace systems segment."

'For $1/Day'… Double-Blind Ivermectin Study Reveals COVID Patients Recover More Quickly, Are Less Infectious

A double-blind Israeli study has concluded that Ivermectin, an inexpensive anti-parasitic widely used since 1981, reduces both the duration and infectiousness of Covid-19, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The study, conducted by Prof. Eli Schwartz, founder of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Disease at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, looked at some 89 eligible volunteers over the age of 18 who had tested positive for coronavirus, and were living in state-run Covid-19 hotels. After being divided into two groups, 50% received ivermectin, and 50% received a placebo. Each patient was given the drug for three days in a row, an hour before eating.

83% of participants were symptomatic at recruitment. 13.5% of patients had comorbidities of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, hypertension or cancer. The median age of the patients was 35, ranging from 20 to 71-years-old.

Results

Treatment was discontinued on the third day, and patients were monitored every two days thereafter. By day six, 72% of those treated with ivermectin tested negative for the virus, vs. 50% of those who received the placebo. Meanwhile, just 13% of ivermectin patients were able to infect others after six days compared to 50% of the placebo group - nearly four times as many…..

Clarkson: "Communist" Government Advisors Want To Lock Us Down Forever

https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/clarkson-communist-government-advisors-want-lock-us-down-forever

British broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson has blasted “communist” government advisors who want to keep the population under lockdown forever.

Clarkson made the comments during an interview with the Radio Times.

“I think the politicians should sometimes tell those communists at Sage to get back in their box,” he said.

“Let’s just all go through life with our fingers crossed and a smile on our face. I can see Boris doesn’t want to open it up and shut us back down again. But if it’s going to be four years … and who knows, it could be 40 years.”

The former Top Gear presenter then made clear that the cost of freedom is the inevitable risk of death.

“Well, if it’s going to be for ever, let’s open it up and if you die, you die,” he said.

While some COVID restrictions in England were lifted on July 19, foreign travel is still perilous and people are still being forced to self-isolate as well as having to wear masks in some settings.

Clarkson was immediately accused of being “boorish and insensitive” by the Guardian over the comments, despite the fact that he was infected with COVID and recovered from it last Christmas.

The broadcaster’s reference to “communist” government advisors is undoubtedly a reference to SAGE advisor Susan Michie, the proud Communist Party member who is so hardcore she earned the nickname “Stalin’s nanny.”

During a television appearance on Channel 4, Michie was asked how long mask mandates and social distancing should go on for, to which she responded, “forever.”

After being subsequently challenged on the subject of if her lifetime membership of the Communist Party informed her beliefs, Michie completely failed to answer the question.

An irate Twitter mob then leapt to her defense, claiming that the male host merely asking the question of Michie was a misogynistic attack.

As we previously highlighted, the question of how long coronavirus restrictions will remain in place was put to Iceland’s chief epidemiologist, who responded in the affirmative that the rules could be in effect for up to fifteen years.

Lockdown Forever: Boris Johnson Drafts Plans for ‘Firebreak’ Winter Shutdown

A contingency plan for the implementation of “firebreak” lockdowns in the winter have been drawn up by the British government, despite earlier promises that the end of lockdowns in Britain would be “irreversible”.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has authorised the planning of short-term lockdown restrictions should the country’s socialised healthcare system, the National Health Service (NHS), become overwhelmed in the autumn or winter months.

Speaking to the i Newspaper, a senior government source said: “Should more lockdowns be necessary, the plan is for them to be short, and preferably during the school holidays in late October and over Christmas. Firebreaks rather than lasting for months at a time.

“Barring a new vaccine-beating strain, fears over a rise in infections similar to that seen last autumn are actually outweighed by other issues like an NHS staffing crisis and the likely resurgence in flu infections, and other respiratory diseases. On top of Covid infections, these factors could tip the NHS back to the brink and force more lockdowns.”

A government spokesman confirmed that it has put these plans in place, saying: “As a responsible Government, we have to be prepared to respond to unexpected events as the country learns to live with COVID-19.

“As part of our strategy to manage the virus, it is both right and sensible that we maintain contingency plans for reimposing restrictions at a local, regional or national level if evidence suggests they are necessary.

“As set out in guidance, we will continue to monitor the data on a regular basis to ensure there is no danger of the NHS facing unsustainable pressure.”

Dozens of anti-vaccine protesters attempted to storm the BBC's west London studios this afternoon prompting violent clashes with police - with at least one making it inside.

The protest, organised by anti-lockdown group Official Voice, is believed to have been directed against vaccine passports and jabs for children.

The protesters started at Shepherds Bush Green at around 1pm before making the short journey to the BBC Studioworks site in White City.

Currently, the site is used by BBC Studioworks with ITV live programmes such as This Morning and Loose Women filmed there, as well as some live BBC shows. The BBC Worlds News is filmed nearby.

However, the main BBC News programme is filmed at Broadcasting House in Portland Place, Westminster.

The BBC sold the site to property developers Stanhope plc in 2013, and the site now mostly contains homes and entertainment and leisure facilities.

No arrests have been made and an officer sustained a 'minor' facial injury during the demonstration, which is being investigated, the Metropolitan Police said.

One of the ringleaders appeared to be DJ Pat Wilson, who proudly posted a picture of himself on Instagram holding up his 'demands' inside the building.

He said afterwards: 'We want to make a noise, the right noise. We will see what happens now.'

Later in a speech to the march he added: 'A group of us lot set this up, but we're not the leaders we don't want to tell you lot where to go or what to do.'

Former Coronation Street actor Sean Ward was also at the protest and posted footage from the roadside.

Loose Women presenter Charlene White took to Twitter to reveal that the protesters tried to access the site while they were on air. She wrote: 'Huge thanks to Andy and the security team over at Television Centre. The protesters attempted to gain access to the building while we were live on air with @loosewomen - and we’ve only just left, because of safety. Andy and his team were just incredible, thank-you.'

On its Instagram page, Official Voice said the 'media is the problem' and proclaimed that 'the lies will end' as it urged supporters to descend on London for today's protest from as early as July 27.

There, they were filmed clashing with police outside the building, with at least one of the protesters wearing a beret as they tussled with officers.

Video shows police attempting to push back protesters in a bid desperate bid to stop the group getting inside the centre.

Initially, the police were seemingly overwhelmed before reinforcements quickly arrived, including officers with batons. Some of the demonstrators later made it to the BBC's current headquarters in Portland Place, police said, but left hours later.

Getting the Band Back Together: U.K. and Canada Send Troops Back to Afghanistan

Afghanistan’s Khaama Press reported Friday that Canada has dispatched “an unknown number of Special Forces” troops to Afghanistan to evacuate staffers from the embassy in Kabul.

The United Kingdom said Thursday it will send 600 troops to help its own 4,000 nationals withdraw as the Taliban closes in on Kabul, while the United States hastily committed 3,000 troops to a similar effort.

A Canadian official not authorized to publicly discuss the special forces deployment told the Associated Press that special forces operators would be sent to protect the Kabul embassy, where staffers are currently shredding sensitive papers and preparing to evacuate.

Canada deployed about 40,000 troops to Afghanistan under the auspices of NATO but began withdrawing them in 2014.

“The highly-trained soldiers are expected to work alongside allies, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, which are sending thousands of troops to the Afghan capital to aid in the partial evacuation of their embassies as security throughout the war-torn country rapidly deteriorates,” a Canadian defense source told CBC News.

CBC’s source said there has been an “extensive discussion between the Canadian military and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM)” about U.S. forces providing “logistical and transport assistance” for Canada’s evacuation effort.

The Canadian government in July announced a program to resettle Afghans who served in positions “integral” to the Armed Forces mission, such as interpreters and drivers, to help them escape from Taliban retribution. Closing the Kabul embassy suddenly would severely hinder that program.

Canadian officials on Friday refused to state if a shutdown of the Canadian embassy in Kabul is imminent.

The U.K. military watched in frustration as Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand province and focus of the British war effort in Afghanistan for almost 20 years, fell to the Taliban on Friday. Almost all of the U.K.’s 457 casualties in Afghanistan were sustained in Helmand.

“The political will to see through enduring support to Afghanistan has not been there, and a lot of people are going to die because of that, and for me that is extremely humiliating,” former U.K. defense minister Johnny Mercer, who served in Afghanistan, told the BBC on Thursday.

Canada was comparably disheartened by the fall of Kandahar, where the Canadian combat deployment to Afghanistan was focused.

As with the United States, Afghanistan was Canada’s longest war; its mission began in 2001 and lasted until 2014. 165 Canadians died during the war, and over 2,000 were wounded. Kandahar fell to the Taliban without resistance on Friday, marking the symbolic restoration of the “Islamic Emirate.”

Facebook and Google building massive network under world's oceans

Facebook and Google will be building an undersea network of internet cables in an attempt to bring internet and faster connections to the Asian-Pacific region.

The undersea network of cables, which is being called Apricot, will aid in connecting Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Indonesia to provide better broadband access and 5G wireless connectivity, according to Facebook.

“The Apricot cable is part of our ongoing effort to expand global network infrastructure and better serve the more than 3.5 billion people around the world who use our services every month,” Facebook said in a news release.
