Google workers form union to drive changes within company
Workers at Alphabet Inc. said Monday that a group of employees had formed a union focused on driving changes to the company's structure. Software engineers Parul Koul and Chewy Shaw wrote in a New York Times opinion piece that they are among more than 200 U.S. workers at Alphabet who've created the Alphabet Workers Union, which is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America. Koul and Shaw, who were elected the union's executive chair and vice chair, respectively, said that the union will be open to Alphabet workers "regardless of classification" given a high proportion of temporary workers, vendors, and contractors at Google. "Alphabet continues to crack down on those who dare to speak out, and keep workers from speaking on sensitive and publicly important topics, like antitrust and monopoly power," they said in their opinion piece. Alphabet didn't immediately return MarketWatch's request for comment. Alphabet shares are off 0.3% in Monday morning trading.

Mexico to Take Steps to Grant Assange Political Asylum, President Lopez Obrador Says
A UK court ruled earlier in the day to block WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's extradition to the US, where he could face up to 175 years in prison for espionage and computer fraud. The US Department of Justice has voiced its disappointment with the ruling, vowing to keep seeking his extradition.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Monday that Mexico could grant Julian Assange political asylum, if London agrees to release him. Speaking at a press conference, the president said he had asked the foreign minister to reach out to the UK authorities about the possible offer.
"Assange is a journalist and deserves a chance, I am in favour of pardoning him…We'll give him protection", Lopez Obrador told journalists."
