Dollar erases early weakness as upbeat risk sentiment fades; yuan shines

The U.S. dollar recovered after falling to its lowest level since April 2018 on Monday, as surging coronavirus cases undermined bullish sentiment had that kicked off the new year across global markets and pushed investors into riskier currencies, such as the Chinese yuan and the euro. With U.S. interest rates pinned at record lows, massive U.S. deficits and a belief that rebounding world trade will drive non-dollar currencies higher, the dollar weakened on the first day of trading in 2021 after falling nearly 7% in 2020.

The Chinese currency was the biggest beneficiary of the weak dollar trade as the yuan rocketed to a two-and-a-half-year high-that will need to be addressed soon.

The dollar index rose 0.013%, after touching a low of 89.415, a level last seen on April 17, 2018. The greenback turned slightly higher after U.S. stocks turned lower after opening at record levels but the longer-term outlook remains weak. Bitcoin tumbled, falling as low as $27,734 at one point, after gains over the new yearโ€™s break that saw the worldโ€™s most popular cryptocurrency rise to a record $34,800. It was last down 3.78% at $31,848.09.

U.S. construction spending increased by 0.9% in November over October, the Commerce Department said Monday, following an upwardly revised rise of 1.6% in October. This came in slightly below consensus economistsโ€™ estimates for a 1.0% increase, according to Bloomberg data. Still, construction spending was up 3.8% over the same month in 2019. A month-over-month decline in non-residential private construction weighed on overall construction spending. Residential private construction, however, led the upside, increasing by 2.7% month-over-month and 16.1% year-over-year amid strong housing market activity. The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded at the fastest rate in six years in December, according to IHS Markit, in the latest sign of the recovery in goods-producing industries.

IHS Markitโ€™s final manufacturing sector purchasing managersโ€™ index rose to 57.1 in December following an earlier print of 56.5 for the month. Readings above the neutral level of 50.0 indicate expansion of a sector.

Barclays says bank stock rally can continue as it ups Goldman and Morgan Stanley

Analysts at Barclays said a recent bank stock rally BKX, -1.35% could have legs, driven both by a rebound in EPS and continued tangible book value growth, as well as multiple expansion. Lower loan loss provisions should be the bigger driver in earnings, even as uncertainties over rising COVID-19 cases and heightened restrictions present risks. It upgraded Goldman Sachs GS, -0.54%, Morgan Stanley MS, -0.02% and Ally Financial ALLY, -0.22% to overweight from equal-weight, while lowering Citi C, -2.21%, Zions Bancorp ZION, -2.39% and SVB Financial SIVB, -0.94% to equal weight from overweight.

This is the game they have played for a very long time-set "aside" an amount for loan loss provisions and when that does not "hit" the total amount just use the difference in both figures and apply it to your balance sheet as earned income-done it for many years this way.

ty

btw ty for adding the stuff on AF2 to counter the doofus factor with that one.

The one today says "Pence has resurfaced today"

Did they not see the swearing in yesterday?

guess not

I don't know when he returned to DC but he did leave on 1223 for sure and went to Grand Junction.

All that stuff with the SAM391 vs AF2 was prolly Scavino on that flight-Pence could have been on it but it was never ever classified as AF2 as I have it out as SAM391 from the start of it being visible

They can just buy and sell them through the "member" countries of the IMF.

Try and wash it through the system based on volume-I probably would too if I wuz them.

Not too many choices when you deal in trillions.

you did the right thing with that for sure

got out in Aug 07 but shorted the shit outta all of it starting in late '06-was painful for a bit but I never threw in the towel from additions to that position.

The luck part of it was the FRBNY doing reverse repoo's to force the banks to sell assets-that I did not count on but they did it.

don't know it all either and sometimes I forget stuff I "knew".

That was the dark period that I dragged muhself out of (spouse helped much but it had to be done by me as no other person(s) could do it).

The catalyst for that was LV but had been following along on half since early 2016.

Was still going to the library up until 2018 to access this and the Battle of the Bewbs put that to bed quick.

Made the decision to come in here and post based on a veteran saying they were to old to fight so I decided I could and did

Never made a post until May of 2018-but involved since the early days as a lurker

Gold futures up 2.7% for biggest daily percentage rise since April

Gold futures rallied on Monday, settling up by 2.7% to mark the largest daily increase since April. "In the short term, expect gold prices to rise because of the economic consequences of the recent aggressive rise of COVID infections, hospitalizations, and deaths as well as the new and apparently highly contagious strain of COVID," said Ed Moy, former director of the U.S. Mint and chief strategist at gold seller Valaurum. "This will likely result in significantly increased economic stimulus in the United States, both monetary and fiscal, which in turn will put downward pressure on the [U.S. dollar] and push gold prices higher." February gold GCG21, 2.63% rose $51.50, or 2.72%, to settle at $1,946.60 an ounce.

Gina Haspel went to Military School at Lakenheath

July 20, 2019

The Girl Who Became Spymaster

When Gina Haspel, director of the CIA, gave her first public speech last fall at the University of Louisville, she mentioned in passing that she had gone to boarding school in England.

Where? I wondered.

The formative years of spies can illuminate the trajectory of their otherwise shadowy careers.

James Angleton, the legendary chief of counterintelligence from 1954 to 1974, attended Malvern College, an exclusive secondary school in England as young man. He absorbed the class prejudices of the English upper class which blinded him to the fact that his great good friend in British intelligence, Kim Philby, was a Soviet spy.

William Colby, CIA director from 1973 to 1975, was Angletonโ€™s nemesis. He grew up as an itinerant Army brat who attended public high school in Vermont. He became one of the agencyโ€™s most democratic (small โ€œdโ€) directors. Colby dragged the agency, kicking and screaming, into the modern era in which it had to submit to congressional oversight.

Gina Haspelโ€™s education, it seems, had both exclusive and democratic elements.

A friendly source informs me that Haspel attended Lakenheath American High School, located on a U.S. air base northeast of London. Then calling herself Gina Walker, she graduated in 1974.

A co-educational school with 430 students today, Lakenheath American is one of 164 accredited institutions run by the Pentagonโ€™s public school system, known as Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).

All of the students at Lakenheath are children of U.S. officers, enlisted personnel or support staff. The school is not open to British students.
