December Employment Report: 140 Thousand Jobs LOST, 6.7% Unemployment Rate
Total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 140,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The decline in payroll employment reflects the recent increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and efforts to contain the pandemic. In December, job losses in leisure and hospitality and in private education were partially offset by gains in professional and business services, retail trade, and construction.
…
The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for October was revised up by 44,000, from +610,000 to +654,000, and the change for November was revised up by 91,000, from +245,000 to +336,000. With these revisions, employment in October and November combined was 135,000 more than previously reported. In December, the year-over-year change was negative 9.37 million jobs.
Total payrolls decreased by 140 thousand in December. Private payrolls decreased by 95 thousand.
Payrolls for October and November were revised up 135 thousand combined. The Labor Force Participation Rate was unchanged at 61.5% in December. This is the percentage of the working age population in the labor force. The unemployment rate was unchanged in December at 6.7%.
This was well below consensus expectations, however October and November were revised up by 135,000 combined.

Dominion sues Sidney Powell for defamation, seeking $1.3 billion in damages
Dominion Voting Systems on Friday filed a defamation lawsuit seeking $1.3 billion in damages against Sidney Powell, a pro-Trump lawyer who has pushed unfounded conspiracy theories alleging that the company was involved in an international communist plot to rig the election against President Trump.
The big picture: Dominion alleges that Powell acted "in concert with allies and media outlets determined to promote a false preconceived narrative about the 2020 election—caused unprecedented harm." In an interview with the Axios Re:Cap podcast last week, Dominion CEO John Poulos did not rule out suing Trump himself.
What they're saying: "As a result of the defamatory falsehoods peddled by Powell … Dominion’s founder, Dominion’s employees, Georgia’s governor, and Georgia’s secretary of state have been harassed and have received death threats, and Dominion has suffered enormous harm," the lawsuit reads.
"After Dominion sent Powell a letter putting her on formal notice of the facts and the death threats and asking her to retract her false claims, Powell doubled down, tweeting to her 1.2 million Twitter followers that she heard that “#Dominion” had written to her and that, although she had not even seen Dominion’s letter yet, she was “retracting nothing” because “[w]e have #evidence” and “They are #fraud masters!""
"Dominion brings this action to set the record straight, to vindicate the company’s rights under civil law, to recover compensatory and punitive damages, to seek a narrowly tailored injunction, and to stand up for itself and its employees."

Deutsche Bank to agree to pay $100 million over bribery charges- NYT
Germany's Deutsche Bank is expected to agree to pay more than $100 million to settle charges related to allegedly violating anti-bribery laws as it tried to win business in places like China, The New York Times reported on Friday.
Deutsche Bank is expected to enter into a so-called deferred prosecution agreement in Brooklyn federal court, the report added, citing a person familiar with the matter. Such an agreement would be the latest black eye for Deutsche Bank, which has been repeatedly penalized in recent years for its involvement with money laundering and for violating international sanctions. The German bank in 2019 agreed to pay the Securities and Exchange Commission $16 million to resolve allegations that it used corrupt means to win business in China and Russia.
The New York Times reported in 2019 that Deutsche Bank had for years lavished Chinese leaders with expensive gifts and paid millions of dollars to politically connected consultants as the bank tried to raise its profile and land lucrative deals in China.
An agreement between Deutsche Bank and the Justice Department would resolve a long-running investigation just days before President Trump leaves office. For the past two decades, the German bank has been Mr. Trump’s primary lender; he currently owes Deutsche Bank more than $300 million.

Work officially begins replacing Offutt’s aging runway
Work has officially started to completely replace Offutt’s aging runway as Phase 0 of the $143.9 million project began recently.
Phase 0 consists of a variety of preparatory contractor work prior to the full airfield closure in March 2021 that will help them meet the 18-month replacement schedule.
Once all of the flying operations have transitioned to the Lincoln Airport in March, the airfield will completely shut down and Phase 1 will commence.

U.S. Strategic Command Peace
Located at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Neb., U.S. Strategic Command is one of eleven unified commands in the Department of Defense.
Admiral Charles "Chas" A. Richard is the commander, USSTRATCOM, and serves as the senior commander of unified military forces from all four branches of the military assigned to the command. The USSTRATCOM commander is the leader, steward and advocate of the nation's strategic capabilities.
USSTRATCOM integrates and coordinates the necessary command and control capability to provide support with the most accurate and timely information for the President, the Secretary of Defense, other national leadership and combatant commanders.
The mission of USSTRATCOM is to deter strategic attack and employ forces, as directed, to guarantee the security of our Nation and our Allies. The command's assigned responsibilities include strategic deterrence; nuclear operations; space operations; joint electronic spectrum operations; global strike; missile defense; and analysis and targeting. USSTRATCOM's forces and capabilities underpin and enable all other Joint Force operations.
USSTRATCOM combines the synergy of the U.S. legacy nuclear command and control mission with responsibility for space operations, global strike, and global missile defense. This dynamic command gives national leadership a unified resource for greater understanding of specific threats around the world and the means to respond to those threats rapidly.
The Global Operations Center, or GOC, is the nerve center for USSTRATCOM. The GOC is responsible for the global situational awareness of the Commander, USSTRATCOM, and is the mechanism by which he exercises operational command and control of the Nation's global strategic forces.
