Crypto exchange Bakkt to go public via $2.1-bln deal with blank-check firm
Intercontinental Exchange Inc -owned Bakkt said on Monday it has agreed to go public through a merger with blank-check firm VPC Impact Acquisition Holdings, giving the cryptocurrency platform an enterprise value of $2.1 billion.
The deal is expected to provide Bakkt, founded by outgoing Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler and backed by Microsoft and Boston Consulting Group, with $207 million in cash and $325 million from other investors, including $50 million from ICE.
The rush to go public comes as the demand for Bitcoin and other digital tokens from retail investors rise as they look for quick gains in a world of ultra-low yields and negative interest rates.
After scaling a record high of $40,000 against the dollar on Jan.7, Bitcoin, the world's most popular digital currency, hit a one-week low to $33,447 on Monday, indicating wild price swings in cryptocurrency exchanges. (reut.rs/3nyjb2S)
Cryptocurrency platform Coinbase had in December confidentially applied to go public, a move that could make it the first such exchange operator in the United States to list on the stock market.
Stock market debuts by such trading platforms are also likely to give more acceptability to digital assets among skeptics and regulators. SPACs are shell companies that raise money through an IPO to take another company public within two years. Such mergers have become a popular alternative for companies looking to go public, with over 200 SPAC deals collectively raising more than $70 billion in equity last year.
Post merger, the combined company will be renamed Bakkt Holdings and will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

GUANGZHOU, China — Bitcoin and other digital coins tanked on Monday, wiping some $200 billion off the cryptocurrency market.
The market capitalization or value of the cryptocurrency market was $880 billion at 9:20 a.m. ET, down from $1.08 trillion a day earlier, according to Coinmarketcap.
Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, fell over 12% from a day earlier to $32,576, according to Coin Metrics data. It earlier sank to an intraday low of $30,863. Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, was down 23% to $1,005. It briefly tumbled below $1,000, hitting an intraday low of $945. The sell-off in cryptocurrencies comes after a huge rally and perhaps signals some profit-taking from investors. Bitcoin is still up over 300% in the last 12 months and last week hit an all-time high just below $42,000.
“The correction we saw was expected as we believe the BTC price surge recently from under $20,000 to $40,000 in the past four weeks will induce sell pressure,” said Simons Chen, executive director of investment and trading at cryptocurrency financial services firm Babel Finance.
The $40,000 mark could have been a trigger for profit-taking, Chen said.
Bitcoin’s resurgence has been attributed to a number of factors including more buying from large institutional investors.
And it has also been likened to “digital gold,” a potential safe-haven asset and a hedge against inflation. In a recent research note, JPMorgan said bitcoin could hit $146,000 in the long term as it competes with gold as an “alternative” currency. The investment bank’s strategists noted, however, that bitcoin would have to become substantially less volatile to reach this price. Bitcoin is known for wild price swings.

Carlos Slim Boosts Oil Industry Investments in Post-Pandemic Bet
Carlos Slim is doubling down on distressed U.S. energy. Slim and his family have accumulated stakes worth $230 million in oil refiner PBF Energy Inc. and pipeline operator PBF Logistics LP, continuing to snap up stock even as the shares have slumped.
The family investment vehicle, Control Empresarial de Capitales, is now PBF Energy’s largest shareholder and the second-biggest in PBF Logistics. They emerged as investors in the companies in 2017 and added about $70 million in 2020, with the bulk of the purchases following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, data compiled by Bloomberg shows.
Slim is the world’s 21st-richest person with a $57.6 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The bulk of his wealth derives from telecommunications giant America Movil SAB de CV. Demand for gasoline collapsed amid the coronavirus pandemic, prompting PBF Energy which spun off PBF Logistics in 2014 to close some of its refining facilities. Shares in both New Jersey-based companies have dropped at least 45% since the start of 2020, while some of PBF Energy’s bonds are trading at distressed levels. A PBF Energy representative said the Slim family’s investing in the company isn’t a recent development. A representative for PBF Logistics didn’t respond to requests for comment.
