Virgin Galactic shares blast higher as space-themed ETF set for launch

Virgin Galactic Holdings shares surged Thursday following news a space-themed actively managed exchange-traded fund (ETF) will launch later this year.

Shares of the Mojave, Calif.-based space explorer gained as much as 22% to a high of $33.72 apiece and were flirting with their best close since February. The rally boosted Virgin’s market capitalization to as much as $7.9 billion, a more than tenfold increase from the $696.9 million when the company debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2017, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Virgin merged with a special-purpose acquisition company on Oct. 28, 2019 and finished with a $4.09 billion market cap that day. Other space-linked companies, including Maxar Technologies, also gained.

Space exploration companies and their suppliers have benefited over the past four years as the Trump administration focused on commercializing space and projects including a return to the moon and a mission to Mars.

The Ark Space Exploration ETF, which will trade under the ticker ARKX, will include companies “leading, enabling, or benefitting from technologically enabled products and/or services that occur beyond the surface of the Earth,” according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Ark Investment Management was the darling of the ETF-industry last year as money poured into its flagship $21.6 billion ARK Innovation ETF which boasts Tesla Inc. as its biggest holding. The company’s four other actively-managed ETFs track autonomous technology and robotics, robotics, genomics and the internet.

In total, Ark ETF products held $41.5 billion, up from $3.5 billion a year ago, according to Bloomberg. Ark is now one of the 10-largest ETF providers.

Seeing Lots of Military Aircraft Over DC? It’s Probably NORAD.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command will conduct what it calls a “routine air defense exercise” over the Washington, DC, region Thursday and Friday as well as on January on January 25 and 26. The exercises will run from midnight to 5:30 AM each day.

It’s all part of an exercise dubbed “Falcon Virgo,” part of Operation Noble Eagle, which was designed to thwart future air attacks after September 11, 2001. Aircraft involved span many of the US armed forces and include F-16s, UC-35A, Navy King Air 300, a MH-65D Dolphin helicopter, and Cessna 182T.

NORAD’s timing may be suboptimal here, seeing as the entire region is on edge following a pro-Trump mob’s assault on the US Capitol last week and looking forward to Joe Biden’s inauguration, which has reportedly drawn threats. One the other hand, if you like watching aircraft, the combined Canada-USA air command says some flights will take place around 2,500 feet, so they should be visible under good conditions. Falcon Virgo will join what appear to be flights in support of security for Biden’s inauguration.

Large bitcoin payment made to far-right individuals before U.S. Capitol attack

Payments in bitcoin worth more than $500,000 were made to 22 different virtual wallets, most of them belonging to far-right activists and internet personalities, before the storming of the U.S. Capitol, cryptocurrency compliance startup Chainalysis said on Friday.

The payments, made by a French donor, of 28.15 bitcoins were made on Dec. 8, the New York-based startup, specializing in countering money laundering and fraud in the digital currency space, said in a blog post. Chainalysis said it now has evidence that many alt-right groups and personalities received large bitcoin donations as part of the single transaction.

“We have also gathered evidence that strongly suggests the donor was a now-deceased computer programmer based in France,” Chainalysis said in the report. Nick Fuentes, who was permanently suspended from YouTube last year for hate speech, received 13.5 bitcoins, worth about $250,000 at the time of the transfer, making him by far the biggest beneficiary of the donation, according to the blog post.

WHO team in Wuhan to start probe after quarantine

Chinese health officials say a group of experts sent by the World Health Organization will start their coronavirus investigation after a 14-day quarantine period. Thirteen members of the international team arrived on Thursday in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province. The city was the outbreak's initial epicenter. The team plans to look into where the virus originated and how it was transmitted to humans. Chinese government experts initially said the virus came from bats. But they later said they could not rule out the possibility that the virus had come from abroad because it has been detected in imported food.

The WHO expert leading the team, Peter Ben Embarek, told NHK last month that it was logical to think the virus originated in China. He said the team wants to investigate the early cases in Wuhan and study samples thought to be stored by Chinese authorities. But it is unclear whether China will fully comply with the team's requests.

Last year, the WHO started asking China to allow a full on-site investigation in Wuhan. But such a probe has not taken place, raising question about whether Beijing will cooperate with such research.
