A new era in America—didn't change what neighbors feel is a new normal in Seattle

'This city is dying:' Many Seattle residents frustrated with violence, destruction

Wednesday, January 20th 2021

SEATTLE — Many who live in Seattle said they are fed up with seeing smashed up windows and spray-painted businesses in their already devastated neighborhoods.

A new era in America—didn't change what neighbors feel is a new normal in Seattle: another night of broken glass, shattered windows and graphic graffiti from continued riots.

“It’s just so frustrating,” said Anita Perry who watched a confrontation between police and a group dressed in all black in Downtown Seattle. “This city is dying because of these people. We’re dying. This used to be a beautiful city, used to be a great place to live.”

Police said not only did the group smash out window after window at the Original Starbucks in Pike Place Market.

The ‘Amazon Go’ store had busted windows and graffiti tagged “skin Biden” and “Kopmala.”

The door windows at the William Kenzo Nakamura Federal Courthouse were also bashed in.

We came to see the protests but it’s really rough when we see some damage like that, it changes things,” said Michael Delbridge who was celebrating and surveying damage.

“It’s rough to see, we love our neighborhood," said Angeliqu Harbin. "And this is a place people come—it’s a great destination. It’s just makes me sad to see the window looking like that."

Perry said she is trying to sell her home so she can leave Seattle—and its problems behind.

“It’s not really worth it anymore,” Perry said. “I just feel aggravated, all the businesses are closed up, all the restaurants are closed up—what I moved here for, nothing is going on anymore. It’s really sad.”

KOMO News was told the Original Starbucks would be guarded overnight after the extensive damage.

SEATTLE – Dozens of protestors who marched through Downtown Seattle Wednesday night damaged the storefront of the original Starbucks store as they made their way through Pike Place Market.

Video from Air 4 showed several people clad in black, some carrying umbrellas, run up and smash the windows around 7:15 p.m. as part of an hours-long demonstration that wound through the city. Glass was left strewn across the store, which is home to the first Starbucks location that would eventually become the worldwide brand. The store opened in 1971.

“It’s rough to see, we love our neighborhood," said Angeliqu Harbin as she surveyed the damage Wednesday night. "And this is a place people come – it's a great destination. It just makes me sad to see the window looking like that."

The protest started around 4:30 p.m. with a handful of people who gathered at Occidental Park, located at 117 S. Washington Street, before they began marching.

The group was said to have gathered to protest the policies of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and was carrying a banner that said Anti-ICE, but another banner at the scene suggested that the group was also protesting other things, including Biden and police.

Police arrested three people during the demonstrations, including one accused of burglary and theft at the Starbucks incident. Seattle's William Kenzo Nakamura Courthouse and an Amazon Go store were also among buildings vandalized during the protests.

Crews were seen cleaning up the damage at Starbucks late Wednesday night.
