Arrests at Australia Day protests urging Indigenous recognition
Demonstrators in major cities demand the national day be changed in honour of the country’s Indigenous people.
26 Jan 2021
Police made arrests in Australia on Tuesday as thousands of people defied public health concerns and protested against the mistreatment of Indigenous people on the day marking the 1788 arrival of the British First Fleet.
For many Indigenous Australians, who trace their lineage on the continent back tens of thousands of years, the Australia Day holiday is known as Invasion Day symbolising the destruction of their cultures by European settlers.

In Sydney, Indigenous groups called for protests to demand the national day be changed, although state health officials have refused to make an exemption to social-distancing rules to allow for crowds of more than 500 people.
Television footage showed protesters gathering early on Tuesday in small groups to comply with the limits.

Police have warned protesters could face fines and imprisonment for breaching public health orders designed to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Images published by news organisations as well as on social media showed police dragging several protesters away from the march in Sydney.
‘One Voice’
In Melbourne, rally organisers said protesters would be sorted into groups of 100 people with 10 metres (30 feet) between each to comply with social-distancing rules.
Images posted on social media, however, showed a larger group of masked protesters gathered at one of the major intersections of the city. They held up their fists in the air and chanted: “One Voice”.
Thousands of people, many unmasked, also showed up in Hobart, the capital city of the southern island of Tasmania.

While thousands of people flocked to beaches and picnic spots around the country to celebrate the national day, many official events were cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions.
Australia has fared better than most other developed economies in the pandemic, with just under 28,800 cases and 909 deaths, mostly in Victoria state. Victoria recorded its 20th straight day on Tuesday with no local transmission.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia Day represents how far the country has come since the First Fleet arrived.
“There is no escaping or cancelling this fact,” Morrison said at a ceremony in Canberra. “For better and worse, it was the moment where the journey to our modern nation began.”
Anthony Albanese, leader of Australia’s Labor Party, said that the country has to acknowledge that its history “doesn’t date back to 1788. It dates back more than 65,000 years.
“Australia Day means different things to different people. For me, it’s a chance to acknowledge the past, recognise the present, and hope for the future.”
Grace Tame, who was declared as Australian of the Year on Monday, also weighed in expressing her support for a change of date of national day.
“It costs us nothing as a nation to actually change that date. And it would mean a lot to that community and to our national community. I think that’s important,” she said in an interview with The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald newspapers.

Australia Day: Arrests as police clash with Invasion Day protesters
A speaker at a massive Invasion Day protest in Sydney says there is only one real way to make sure white Australians pay for what they’ve done.
Peaceful protests calling for a change to the January 26 Australia Day holiday turned ugly as police clashed with protesters and, on one occasion, a protester was forcefully removed by bikies.
Thousands gathered for Invasion Day protests in Australia’s capital cities and in regional centres.
After hours of speeches at the Domain in the Sydney CBD, where police told protesters they could gather but not march, a number of protesters were arrested.
In Canberra, a man wearing a Make America Great Again cap and waving an Australian flag was forcibly removed from an Invasion Day rally by three men in bikie colours.
As he drove away, the assembled crowd cheered.

In Melbourne, thousands marched from Parliament House down Bourke Street after a peaceful protest in which police refused to remove their hats, a stance in line with police procedure.
The clash between police and protesters at the Domain in Sydney followed a warning from police.
“If you do the right thing, I’ll do the right thing,” an officer told an organiser as 3000 people gathered.
NSW Police said five people were arrested including an 18-year-old man who was not part of the gathering.
One man was charged with assaulting police and one woman was charged with hindering police in the execution of duty.
Two other men were each fined $1000 and released.
Among protesters in Sydney was Paul Silva, the nephew of David Dungay Jr, a Dunghutti man from Kempsey, who died in prison custody in 2015.
“I’m here to demand the abolishment of Australia Day,” he told news.com.au.
Earlier, in the Sydney suburb of Newtown, a fresh mural painted by acclaimed street artist Scott Marsh emerged at first light.
It shows Scott Morrison dressed as Captain James Cook next to two words, “Captain Cooked”, and the hashtag #ChangeTheDate.

Donald Trump announces new 'Office of the Former President'
He has only been out of the White House for a few short days - but Donald Trump has already shown he won't be quietly retiring from public life.
Former President Donald Trump has given his first public update since leaving the Oval Office, announcing the establishment of his new "Office of the Former President".
The office will be managed by ex-White House aides from Palm Beach, Florida.
The news was confirmed via an email statement, the first from Mr Trump since Joe Biden took over the top job.
The statement revealed the new office “will be responsible for managing President Trump’s correspondence, public statements, appearances, and official activities” – a clear sign the 74-year-old isn’t planning on quietly retiring from public life.

HIGHLIGHT
Trump unlikely to be convicted
Charis Chang
An article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump has been formally presented to the US Senate but it's looking unlikely the trial will succeed.
At least 17 Republicans would need to vote in favour of finding Mr Trump guilty in order for him to be convicted.
According to a survey done by The New York Times, so far none were indicating they would support the impeachment.
There were 27 senators who were opposed, 16 undecided and seven had no response.
However, this could change as evidence is presented during the trial, which is due to start on February 8.

CNN White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins noted that the Office will be “run by former White House aides” and will operate from “Palm Beach, Florida.”

There has been much speculation about if, when, and how President Trump would return to the political stage.
Some questions seemed to be answered when he broke his uncharacteristic post-presidency silence to endorse Kelli Ward’s reelection bid to gain a second term as the Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman.
Following President Trump’s endorsement, Ward’s reelection was a success. She won 51.5% of the vote, with another Trump ally earning 48.5%.

This move appears to have been foreshadowed by former Trump adviser Jason Miller, who indicated that President Trump would use his time out of office to advocate for election integrity across the country, and would use his dynamic influence to campaign for candidates willing to enact his agenda.
It is also worth noting that there is a similarity in naming conventions between the Office of the Former President, which President Trump established today, and the fictional Office of the President-Elect that Joe Biden claimed to represent during two month period that President Trump contested the 2020 election. Biden’s fictional office was widely mocked by conservatives.
It remains unclear if President Trump is planning a return to presidential politics in 2024.

DONALD TRUMP ANNOUNCES ‘OFFICE OF THE FORMER PRESIDENT’, WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH HIS AGENDA AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
BY: IAN MACDONALD ON: JANUARY 25, 2021 IN: TWEET
As you know, the United States has a new president named Joe Biden. But Donald Trump isn’t going away. While he has not yet announced a 2024 bid for president, it’s looking less and less likely that the U.S. Senate will convict him in the second impeachment attempt. This is based on our opinion.
The second impeachment aimed at convicting former President Trump of “inciting a riot” is also a way to keep him from running again.
We believe Trump will remain immensely popular and will continue to announce new plans and other aspects of his agenda pushing announcement.
“Today, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, formally opened the Office of the Former President,” reads the announcement. “President Trump will always and forever be a champion for the American People.”
“The Office will be responsible for managing President Trump’s correspondence, public statements, appearances, and official activities to advance the interests of the United States and to carry on the agenda of the Trump Administration through advocacy, organizing, and public activism.”
The press release concluded:
“President Trump will always and forever be a champion for the American People.”

Washington Times reported:
The office gives the ex-president a formal vehicle to coordinate future public appearances, statements and official activities. The office might be especially valuable since he is banned from the social-media outlets he had used to great effect while president.
Meanwhile, Trump is awaiting the news of whether or not Facebook will allow him back on. It is unlikely that Twitter will allow Donald Trump to come back anytime soon, if ever. Stay tuned to Media Right News for updates.
