Former Bank of England Governor Carney joins board of digital payments company Stripe
Mark Carney, former head of the UK and Canadian central banks, has joined the board of U.S. digital payments company Stripe Inc, days after the company was reported to be planning a primary funding round valuing it at over $100 billion. Forbes magazine had reported on Wednesday that investors were valuing Stripe at a $115 billion valuation in secondary-market transactions.
A senior Stripe executive told Reuters in December that the company plans to expand across Asia, including in Southeast Asia, Japan, China and India.
The company offers products that allow merchants to accept digital payments from customers and a range of business banking services.
Stripe raised $600 million in April in an extension of a Series G round and was valued back then at $36 billion.
Consumer-facing fintechs have seen a boost to their businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people have been staying at home to avoid catching the virus and have increasingly been managing their finances online.
Carney, who headed the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, had a 13-year career at Wall Street bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc in its London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto offices.
He is the United Nations special envoy on climate action and finance.

China coast guard vessels enter Japan waters near Senkakus
Two Chinese coast guard vessels entered Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands on Sunday for the second day in a row, the Japan Coast Guard said. The vessels intruded into the waters near the group of uninhabited islets, which China claims, in the East China Sea at around 4:50 a.m., before leaving the waters around 11:05 a.m. It was the ninth intrusion this year and the latest since China enacted a law earlier this month explicitly allowing its coast guard to use weapons against foreign ships that Beijing sees as illegally entering its waters. Japan has lodged protests over the repeated intrusions. The Chinese vessels made a move to approach a Japanese fishing boat in the area, the Japanese coast guard said. A Japanese patrol vessel deployed around the fishing boat to ensure its safety warned the Chinese vessels to leave Japanese territory, it said.

The Pay Board and the Price Commission were created on October 22, 1971, when President Nixon appointed 22 members between the boards, as agencies to create and administer economic controls in Phase II of the Economic Stabilization Program (ESP), with Donald Rumsfeld newly acting as the executive director of the Cost of Living Council responsible for establishing the overall goals of Phases I and II of the ESP.
Under the authority of the act, as amended, on August 16, 1971 President Nixon declared goals of combating inflation, reducing unemployment and curbing domestic consumption of foreign goods by imposing a 10% surcharge tax on all dutiable imports.
