Myanmar Protesters Plan Even Bigger Rallies After Deadly Clashes

Myanmar’s anti-military protesters plan to hold their largest mass rally yet on Monday after two demonstrators were shot dead this weekend. Shops and businesses are expected to close in solidarity, with the nation’s largest retailer, City Mart, announcing it will shut all of its outlets.

The violent crackdown on the largely-peaceful movement risks stunting an already troubled economy. Nearly all private bank branches have closed, while automated teller machines are running out of cash amid surging demand. “We expect to see the biggest crowd of people across the country on Monday,” said Aung Kyaw Kyaw Oo, a lower house lawmaker representing the National League for Democracy. “We need to keep fighting against the brutal military.” Myanmar has seen nationwide demonstrations since the military seized control of the country on Feb. 1, with protesters ignoring a ban on public gatherings. A 20-year old student who was shot in the country’s capital of Naypidaw was the first casualty last week. Two men were killed and more than 20 people were injured on Saturday as authorities fired shots to disperse demonstrators in Mandalay.

In an apparent warning to protesters, state-run television carried a broadcast notice on Sunday that said while peaceful demonstrations are lawful, undermining stability is not, and authorities may take action.

The youth-led movement has mobilized supporters peacefully in major cities with three main demands: the release of civilian leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi, recognition of the 2020 election results that showed her party won, and a withdrawal of the military from politics. Suu Kyi’s first court hearing began earlier than expected last week, without her lawyer present. The military has ordered internet blackouts in recent nights as it tightens its grip on power. Facebook Inc. has pushed back against the coup, with Reuters reporting that the company removed the military’s main social media page for violations of community standards prohibiting the incitement of violence and coordinating harm.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in statement on Saturday that the use of lethal force against unarmed civilians was “inexcusable.” Some automatic teller machines have run out of cash within the first few hours of each day as citizens rush to get a hold of money, according to Pe Myint, a senior consultant at Co-operative Bank.

On top of this, bad traffic has prevented bank employees from going to their offices and changes in the senior management at the central bank may also complicate matters, he said. “It is still unlikely to see the reopening of all private banks before the end of February.”

Two F-117 Nighthawks stealth aircraft spotted over Los Angeles

According to Matt Hartman, on February 19, two mysterious F-117 Nighthawks stealth aircraft flew together with a U.S. Air Force KC-135R aerial refueling tanker over Los Angeles International Airport.

“Over LAX Airport the U.S. Air Force KC-135R tanker with two F-117 stealth fighter ,C/S KNIGHT01 w/ KNIGHT02 in flight over SoCal……never in my life…have I seen such a AWE moment…I mean …..WOW!!! 02-19-21,” he said on Twitter.

The F-117A was developed in response to an Air Force request for an aircraft capable of attacking high value targets without being detected by enemy radar. By the 1970s, new materials and techniques allowed engineers to design an aircraft with radar-evading or stealth qualities. The result was the F-117A, the world’s first operational stealth aircraft.

The first Nighthawk flew June 18, 1981, and the original F-117A unit, the 4450th Tactical Group (renamed the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing in October 1989), achieved initial operating capability in October 1983.

The Nighthawk originally saw combat during Operation Just Cause in 1989, when two F-117s from the 37th TFW attacked military targets in Panama. The aircraft was also in action during Operation Desert Shield.

After 25 years of service, the Nighthawk retired on April 22, 2008, but continues to capture the public’s imagination.

According to The Drive, even though F-117 Nighthawk currently flies on in a limited fashion for testing and training purposes, its days as a combat aircraft are long behind it.

In addition, earlier in January 2021, the U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC) has issued a formal order that all KC-135 Stratotankers are now cleared to execute aerial refueling operations with F-117 Nighthawks.

This serves as additional evidence that the F-117’s post-retirement operations are becoming more widespread and far less reclusive in nature.

Macquarie Group Raises Profit Forecast on Texas Power Demand

Macquarie Group Ltd. raised its earnings forecast for the second time in two weeks, saying full-year profit will rise 5%-10% as North America’s extreme winter weather boosts demand for its gas and power services.

“Macquarie’s Commodities and Global Markets business physically ships gas on the majority of major pipelines across the U.S. and over time has built capacity to support clients by delivering power and physical commodities to help them meet the unexpected needs of their customers,” the Sydney-based company said in a statement Monday. Earlier this month, Macquarie said profit in the year to March 31 will be only “slightly” down, as opposed to forecasts of a “significantly” lower result at the end of the first half. Last year, net income fell 8% to A$2.73 billion ($2.1 billion), ending a seven-year run of earnings growth.

Macquarie raises almost US$2 bil for renewable energy fund

Macquarie Group Ltd’s green investment arm raised 1.6 billion euros (US$1.94 billion) for a renewable energy fund.

The company’s Green Investment Group Renewable Energy Fund 2 closed after exceeding its target of 1 billion euros and received commitments from 32 pension funds and insurers from largely the UK and Germany, as well as from some sovereign wealth funds, according to a statement. Earlier this month, Macquarie’s Green Investment Group started a solar energy firm in Europe that followed on the heels of two similar launches in North America and Asia-Pacific. A global pipeline of more than 20 gigawatts of solar energy projects are managed across the three companies.

So far, the MGREF2 fund has made two investments, a 10% stake in the 576-megawatt Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm in the UK and a 50% stake in a 268-megawatt portfolio of residential rooftop solar projects in the US.

The fund follows the MGREF1, an operational offshore wind fund with investments in 1,450 megawatts of offshore wind around the UK. The fund has been managed by Macquarie since its acquisition of GIG from the UK government in 2017.

F.A.A. Orders Inspections on Boeing 777 Jets After Engine Failure

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration said on Sunday that he was requiring “immediate or stepped-up inspections” of all Boeing 777 planes equipped with a particular Pratt & Whitney engine model one day after the jet suffered a dramatic engine failure over Colorado. Also on Sunday, United Airlines, the only American carrier affected by the F.A.A. order, said it was temporarily grounding the 24 Boeing 777 planes currently in use in its fleet with the Pratt & Whitney engines.

The F.A.A. announcement came shortly after its counterpart in Japan ordered airlines there to stop flying the plane, affecting 32 jets operated by All Nippon Airways and Japan Airways. Both the Japanese and American orders apply only to Boeing 777s equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. “We reviewed all available safety data following yesterday’s incident,” the F.A.A. administrator, Steve Dickson, said in a statement. “Based on the initial information, we concluded that the inspection interval should be stepped up for the hollow fan blades that are unique to this model of engine, used solely on Boeing 777 airplanes.”

The episode in Colorado, involving United Airlines Flight 328 on Saturday, resulted in no reported injuries, but the plane shed debris across three neighborhoods before landing safely in Denver.
