There is ‘no credible route to a zero-Covid Britain,’ Boris Johnson says, as he unveils ‘irreversible’ lockdown-lifting plan
Laying out his plans for the gradual lifting of restrictions, Johnson said it is “crucial that this roadmap should be cautious but also irreversible,” claiming that England is “setting out on what I hope and believe is a one-way road to freedom, and this journey is made possible by the pace of the vaccination.”
Johnson’s plan involves schools reopening on March 8, with people in England initially being allowed to meet a single person outside, and one regular visitor for care-home residents, a restriction to be relaxed to up to six people or two households meeting outdoors from March 29.
The slow back-to-normal roadmap, which could stretch further, depending on the coronavirus data, is supposed to continue with stage two starting April 12 and stage three around May 17. Non-essential establishments will potentially be able to reopen in April, and May will see larger outdoor – and some indoor – gatherings, with pub-going and sporting events allowed. The final stage, starting June 21, will supposedly see many restrictions lifted or eased, and nightclubs would also be allowed reopen.
Nearly 18 million people in the UK have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and over 600,000 have received their second dose, with the inoculation tally steadily increasing each day. Meanwhile, the number of people testing positive for the virus is said to be steadily decreasing.

State Department Briefing Gets Heated AfterReporters Accuses Biden Of Taking Credit For Trump’s Accomplishments
A State Department briefing got heated Monday when a reporter argued that President Joe Biden’s administration was taking credit for the accomplishments of former President Donald Trump’s administration.
State Department Spokesman Ned Price laid out that 18 mostly-Western companies have agreed to scale back work on the Nordstream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany, an effort the U.S. has long opposed. He framed the companies’ decision as demonstrating that “the legislative goals and our actions are having a good effect.” A reporter from the Associated Press then interjected.
“You guys have only been in office for a month, right? Are you telling me that in the last four weeks these 18 companies all of the sudden decided to say, ‘Oh my God! We better not doing anything with Nord Stream 2,'” The reporter, Matt Lee said. “You guys are taking credit for stuff the previous administration did. Yes or no?”
Price appeared to try to laugh off Lee’s question, leading the reporter to keep pressing him.
Price and Lee repeatedly spoke over one another, with Price arguing that he is “a spokesman for the State Department.” He ultimately conceded that the employees who secured the agreements with the companies were the same one month ago as they were three months ago.
The pull-out of companies from the Nord Stream 2 project came after the U.S. threatened sanctions against several European companies on January 12, eight days before Biden was inaugurated. The U.S. also registered its opposition to the pipeline long before, with Trump repeatedly bringing up the issue in his visits to Europe.
The future of the pipeline is now unclear with the withdrawal of the companies contracted to construct it.

Sen. Hawley On Lt. Gen. Honoré: This Person Has No Business Leading Any Security Review Related To Capitol Breach
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) pick to lead a Capitol security review. The senator raised concerns about the appointment of retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré to look into last month’s attack.
Honoré has partially blamed the attack on Capitol Police and the House and Senate sergeant at arms. He’s also gone on several TV and radio shows, claiming the Capitol breach was an inside job put on by Trump supporters that allowed the take over.
Hawley shut down those claims, saying there’s no evidence to prove any of the claims made by Honoré.
“To allege that any of you were complicit in this violent mob attack on this building, I think is not only extremely disrespectful, it’s really quite shocking,” Hawley stated. “This person has no business leading any security review related to the events of January 6.”
In the meantime, House and Senate panels are launching their own investigations into the security lapses at the Capitol last month. They are looking to determine what exactly went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again.

Four board members of Texas grid operator RESIGN over blackouts during deadly winter storm
The Texas electric utility is shedding board members ahead of the state probe into the blackouts that left more than four million people without power during a severe winter storm, which claimed an estimated 80 lives and counting.
Chairwoman Sally Talberg, vice chair Peter Cramton, finance and audit chair Terry Bulger and human resources and governance chair Raymond Hepper have tendered their resignations to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), effective Wednesday.
They did so “to allow state leaders a free hand with future direction and to eliminate distractions,” according to the letter made public by local media on Tuesday afternoon.
State legislators are scheduled to meet on Thursday and begin investigating what went wrong last week, as the Texas power grid collapsed amid a snowstorm and freezing temperatures unusual for the southern US state.
More than 4.5 million people found themselves without power at one point, but the ruptured pipes and damaged purification systems mean that an estimated 7.5 million in 204 counties still have to boil their water before it is fit for consumption.
Almost 80 people have died from causes attributed to the storm so far, according to AP estimates, and the number is likely to rise as local medical examiners process the backlog of deaths.
While the exact causes of the grid’s collapse are yet to be determined, ERCOT officials have said that their regular winter preparations were just not enough for the extent and the severity of the storm. There have also been reports that winterization of equipment was delayed or postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
ERCOT is part of a unique set-up that has most of Texas running on a separate power grid from the rest of the US. Another feature of the arrangement – the ability of power companies to charge higher prices when demand spikes – is also coming back to haunt ERCOT, as Texans have protested the astronomical utility bills as “price gouging” and insult to injury after the storm.
