Chegg The Poster Child for Institutionalized Academic Cheating

The 2019 college admission scandal has shined a new light on academic integrity in the United States. What was long considered to be socially acceptable or even legal is now coming into question as media and lawmakers are questioning the status quo in our educational system. Beyond Rick Singer and his manipulation of admissions, the conversation of institutionalized cheating cannot occur without first mentioning Chegg.Chegg, a $4 bilcompany that has made a business off selling answers to homework and selling a service that allows students to submit plagiarized work as original is undermining the educational system and will soon be brought to the forefront of media attention. In this report, Citron will explain how the “it’s never a problem until it’s a problem” moment has hit Cheggas now cheating does make a difference.

American Airlines Confirms Encounter With Unidentified Cylindrical Object Over New Mexico

Less than 48 hours after our initial reporting on an outright strange incident involving American Airlines Flight 2292 as it flew at 36,000 feet over the northeastern corner of New Mexico on February 21st, 2021, we have confirmation that the event in question did indeed occur and that it is being investigated by the FBI. The incident involved pilots of the Airbus A320 being buzzed by an unidentified cylindrical-shaped object moving at high-speed, which resulted in them querying the FAA's Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center.

The original recording of the incident went like this: "Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us - I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing - moving really fast right over the top of us." The confirmation of the event comes to us from American Airlines. On the day of the incident, we asked the company to confirm it and for any additional information regarding it, including after-action reports, and if the pilots were available to discuss it.

The first reply didn't support the evidence in hand, with a communications representative for the company replying:

At this time, we do not have any indication the radio transmission was from the flight crew on board American Airlines Flight 2292 on Feb. 21.

We immediately followed up looking for clarification on that statement, especially in regards to if the pilots had been directly asked about this or not, and noting that we had clearly heard the flight number's identification in a longer version of the clip provided to us by master radio interceptor Steve Douglass who originally recorded it. We also mentioned that we are likely to get more information about the event from the FAA and that we really need clarification so that there weren't any embarrassing discrepancies. The response was completely different than the company's first missive, stating: Following a debrief with our Flight Crew and additional information received, we can confirm this radio transmission was from American Airlines Flight 2292 on Feb. 21. For any additional questions on this, we encourage you to reach out to the FBI.

Not only did they confirm that the transmission was authentic and that the incident did occur, but it also appears to be under investigation by the FBI.

We have been in touch with the FAA and are awaiting a formal response to our detailed query. But in the meantime, as we promised, we have authenticated the recording and we now know for certain that the event did indeed take place. It is one of a number of similar strange encounters as of late that we provided links to in our original report. Hopefully, the FAA will be as forthcoming as they usually are with us on these matters and we can get more information soon.

A huge thanks to American Airlines for taking the time to look into this and to get us the best information available. Also, a huge thanks to Steve Douglass for the updated recording heard in the embedded video above and for finding this intriguing transmission in the first place.

Moutai’s $78 Billion Rout Sends Signal for China’s Stock Market

Kweichow Moutai Co. investors are selling their shares at the fastest pace in more than two years, a warning for a market that owes much of its rally to a handful of large caps.

The biggest stock listed in mainland China has lost $78 billion since onshore markets reopened after the Lunar New Year holiday. Wednesday’s 4.6% drop takes the five-day decline to 15%, the biggest for such a period since October 2018. Moutai had rallied 30% this year through its Feb. 10 record close. Momentum trades are cracking after the CSI 300 Index briefly surpassed its 2007 closing peak. Chinese traders were griping about a lack of market breadth before the holiday and extreme valuations for some of the most-loved stocks. Less than 10 companies accounted for half of the returns on the benchmark including Moutai with foreign investors and domestic mutual funds compounding the problem by buying the most liquid megacaps.

Triggers for the reversal include signals on tighter monetary policy from the central bank. The People’s Bank of China is withdrawing liquidity from the financial system, while local media ran a front-page editorial this week saying China’s economic recovery is creating the conditions for the central bank to “normalize” monetary policy. Other makers of baijiu a popular liquor in China are among the worst performers on the CSI 300 in the past five days, with Shanxi Xinghuacun Fen Wine Factory Co. down 23% and Luzhou Laojiao Co. losing 21%.

Bitcoin collector MicroStrategy fills its wallet with another $1 billion

Major bitcoin corporate backer MicroStrategy Inc said on Wednesday it bought another 19,452 bitcoin, worth around $1.03 billion, swelling its holdings of the cryptocurrency and sending the company’s shares 8% higher in premarket trading. The company, whose Chief Executive Officer Michael Saylor is one of the most vocal proponents of bitcoin, bought the cryptocurrency in cash at an average price of about $52,765 each.

MicroStrategy, the world’s largest publicly traded business intelligence company, spent last year steadily amassing bitcoin after making its first investment in August. The company earlier this month engaged in an almost $1 billion convertible note offering with the proceeds used for buying bitcoin. Bitcoin’s price has recently scaled record highs as major firms, such as BNY Mellon, asset manager BlackRock Inc and credit card giant Mastercard Inc, backed certain cryptocurrencies, with Tesla Inc investing $1.5 billion in bitcoin. Square Inc Chief Executive Jack Dorsey promised on Tuesday to “double down” on the payment firm’s commitment to bitcoin, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency. MicroStrategy owns close to 90,531 bitcoin, which were acquired at an aggregate purchase price of about $2.17 billion and an average purchase price of around $23,985 per bitcoin, it said on Wednesday.

The company’s bitcoin holdings are valued at about $4.48 billion, according to a Reuters calculation.

U.S. Stock Trades to Clear in a Day Under Clearinghouse Proposal

The clearinghouse that played a role in last month’s Reddit-fueled market frenzy is proposing that settlement times for U.S. stock trades be cut in half from two days to one by 2023.

Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. offered a blueprint for speeding up the process in a white paper published Wednesday. The behind-the-scenes system underlying any trade where buyers and sellers exchange cash for securities was thrust into the spotlight after retail investors coordinated on Reddit to bid up GameStop Corp. and other stocks. The massive rally prompted Robinhood Markets to curb purchases of those securities, angering some customers, after the DTCC demanded an unusually high amount of collateral from the firm during the volatility. Settling transactions in a single day, or T+1 in industry parlance, could reduce the volatility-based portion of members’ margin requirements by 41%, the clearinghouse said in its white paper.

The DTCC identified several major hurdles to enacting real-time settlement, an approach advocated by Robinhood Chief Executive Officer Vlad Tenev. Real-time settlement would make margin trading more complicated for investors, the DTCC said. It would also increase the amount of money and securities changing hands in a given day because it would restrict the clearinghouse’s ability to net out buy and sell orders at individual firms, as it does now.

DTCC’s role in the GameStop saga, and that of a subsidiary, the National Securities Clearing Corp., became more evident after Robinhood restricted certain stock purchases. That move came on a day when the clearinghouse demanded a deposit of about $3 billion from the online brokerage.
