‘Metal Fatigue’ A Factor In United Airlines Flight 328 Engine Failure
DENVER (CBS4) – In a virtual news update on Monday night, the National Transportation Safety Board says they believe metal fatigue played a role in the engine explosion on United Airlines Flight 328. The explosion sent debris falling onto Broomfield neighborhoods and parks.
Some debris was found Monday morning in Arvada.
NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt says there was a loud bang and vibrations coming from engine number 2 about four minutes after takeoff from Denver International Airport. He says the plane was about 12,000 feet above homes.
Sumwalt says two blades in the engine broke; one fractured at the base where it meets the hub, and the second fractured about mid-way. He says the first blade caused “overload damage” to the second blade.
One of those blades was found on a soccer field.

A witness for an upcoming congressional hearing on “disinformation and extremism in the media” is a former employee for the Qatari-government’s “Al Jazeera” propaganda outlet
The witness – Soledad O’Brien – is set to testify on February 24th at the “Fanning the Flames: Disinformation and Extremism in the Media” hearing held by the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. Her witness statement openly attacks conservative news anchors such as Tucker Carlson.
O’Brien, however, has previously served as a correspondent for Al-Jazeera, a “propaganda-spreading” outlet funded and controlled by the government of Qatar.
A 2013 press release reveals that the media company “signed an agreement with Emmy Award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien’s production company, Starfish Media Group.”
“O’Brien will contribute short-form segments as Special Correspondent to Al Jazeera America’s primetime current affairs magazine program “America Tonight,” and Starfish will produce hour-long documentary specials,” the announcement adds.
O’Brien also praised the outlet’s “quality programming”:
“I look forward to beginning a relationship with Al Jazeera America, which has made a commitment to producing quality programming and pursuing underreported stories.”
She defended her move, which garnered criticism from fans and media personalities such as Hugh Hewitt, against a tweet noting her “affiliation” with the network “cheapened” her work by adding that the gig was a “great opportunity to do great work.”

Teachers' unions strongly condemned the Biden administration’s decision to prohibit states from canceling standardized tests
State officials can delay and conduct standardized testing remotely, but cannot cancel the testing altogether, the Department of Education wrote in a letter Monday. In response, teachers unions lashed out, arguing that such testing would be unreliable and inequitable.
“High stakes standardized tests administered during the global health crisis should not determine a student’s future, evaluate educators, or punish schools; nor should they come at the expense of precious learning time that students could be spending with their educators,” National Education Association (NEA) President Becky Pringle said in a statement.
Pringle added that standardized tests have always been unreliable and are “especially unreliable” now.
The NEA and American Federation of Teachers (AFT) have consistently opposed efforts during the pandemic to reopen schools and return to in-person instruction across the country. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released in January found that in-school COVID-19 transmission was lower than transmission in the surrounding community.
Standardized tests are important because it is urgent to “understand the impact of COVID-19 on learning,” Ian Rosenblum, acting assistant secretary of the Education Department, explained in the letter Monday. Students’ performance nationwide has plummeted amid school closures while other students have simply not showed up to virtual classes.
“As the educators in the classroom, we have always known that standardized tests are not the best way to measure a child’s development, nor do they particularly help kids or inform best practices for teaching and learning,” AFT President Randi Weingarten said in a statement. “That is especially true in these unprecedented times.”
