I knew one of the women who skied in with the group that sabotaged the heavy metals plant. She was young during that time, not more than twenty - young people, besides having endurance knew the local terrain. I don't think history includes all the people involved - it wasn't exactly safe to talk about involvement in the war. She was a lovely person, quiet and gracious, wonderful mother and wife. She developed cancer when her girls were young adults and her son, a fisherman, was just out of high school. I was told the cancer was from exposure during the sabotage. There is something beautiful about a women who is so decidedly female and because it is necessary answers a call to duty. Look at how successful they were. She and her family were avid cross country skiers and my memory of her is in one of those beautiful Norwegian sweaters. When she died her son tried to tell me about her death and he burst into tears. He said she never spoke once about her pain or fear of dying, no grief, just that she loved her family. Her ability to face life and face its headwind is a testament to what it means to live.
