Tesla lifts off, rockets toward best day since 2013

Shares of Tesla surged 20% on Tuesday, rebounding from a deep selloff and on track for its largest one-day gain in nearly eight years after data showed an increase in China sales and an analyst raised his rating on the electric car maker. The jump, which added over $100 billion to Tesla’s market capitalization, would end a five-day streak of losses for the company in a Nasdaq slump in which investors spooked by rising interest rates have abandoned growth stocks with heady valuations. Tesla’s stock was last at $669 and it was heading for its strongest one-day performance since May 2013. The stock remains down more than 20% from its January record high. Tesla sold 18,318 China-made vehicles in February, up from 15,484 in January, Chinese auto industry body CPCA said. After the recent market volatility, Tesla’s stock remains up about 70% over the past six months. Thirteen analysts have neutral ratings on Tesla, while 12 recommend buying and 10 recommend selling, according to Refinitiv. Tuesday’s Tesla rally accompanied a 4.2% jump in the Nasdaq, as U.S. bond yields retreated and investors picked up battered technology stocks. Tesla was the biggest contributor to Tuesday’s 2.1% gain in the S&P 500, which it joined in December.

Biden's name won't appear on stimulus checks, White House says

President Joe Biden's name will not appear on this round of stimulus checks, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Tuesday. "We're doing everything in our power to expedite the payments and not delay them which is why the president's name will not appear on the memo line of this round of stimulus checks," Psaki told reporters. Last spring, taxpayers got stimulus checks with President Donald Trump's name printed on them. Psaki said the White House doesn't yet know exactly when the checks will start to be sent out beyond saying "this month." The House of Representatives is expected to pass the measure on Wednesday and send it to the White House for Biden's signature. More details of the timing of the payments will likely come at that time.

SoftBank Put $400 Million Into Greensill Months Before Collapse

SoftBank Group Corp.’s Vision Fund injected at least $400 million into Greensill Capital at the end of last year, according to people familiar with the matter, deepening the potential losses the giant tech investor faces in the startup’s collapse.

The infusion of cash was in addition to the $1.5 billion the Vision Fund had invested in Greensill in 2019. The money, not previously reported, was used as a financial backstop when another Vision Fund company came close to defaulting on a loan to Greensill, the people said. Greensill, which specialized in making short-term cash-advance-style loans to companies, filed for insolvency this week after regulators took over its banking unit and Credit Suisse Group AG froze investments funds critical to the startup’s operations. Greensill packaged loans to companies into securities, known as notes, that were purchased by the Credit Suisse funds and sold to investors as low-risk, money-market-style investments.

SoftBank, founded by billionaire Masayoshi Son, is a giant in the field of investing, with interests spanning microchips, self-driving cars, satellites, e-commerce and mobile-phone networks. The Japanese conglomerate’s $100 billion Vision Fund, and a smaller successor fund, have invested in over 80 companies. In addition to Greensill, these include Uber Technologies Inc. and TikTok owner ByteDance Ltd.

Trader gets painted stones instead of $36m of copper

A commodities trader was given painted stones instead of $36m (ÂŁ26m) of copper from a Turkish supplier in a fraudulent deal last summer.

Geneva-based Mercuria Energy Group says it's been the victim of cargo fraud following its purchase of 10,000 tons of copper blister. When the cargoes started arriving in China, it found containers full of painted stones instead. The bizarre case happened despite security and inspection controls.

Last year, Mercuria agreed to buy the copper blister, an impure form of the metal, for delivery to China. About 6,000 tonnes was loaded for shipment in more than 300 containers on eight vessels. But before its journey from a port near Istanbul, the copper was switched with paving stones, spray-painted to resemble the semi-refined metal. Mercuria, one of the five-biggest oil traders in the world, is seeking redress in Turkish and UK courts against the copper supplier Bietsan Bakir.

Turkish police have taken a number people into custody in relation to the faux-copper scheme. "Suspects have been taken under custody who are thought to be involved in the various parts of this organised crime against Mercuria," the company said in a statement while thanking the Istanbul Financial Crimes Department. It appears the copper was initially loaded into the first shipment of containers, before being surveyed by an inspection company. Seals used to prevent fraud were fixed to the containers.

But the containers were opened and the copper replaced with paving stones, Istanbul law firm KYB told media. The fraudsters switched between fake and real container seals to avoid detection.

With the vessels at sea, Mercuria paid $36m over five installments. The fraud wasn't discovered until the ships began arriving in the Chinese port of Lianyungang later that month.

"There has been a criminal investigation petition by the buyer against the seller and two intermediaries," Turkish police said in a statement. "It's been determined that the incident is the outcome of fraud perpetrated in an organised manner." In cases of non-delivery a trader could make a claim against a cargo's insurance policy. But Mercuria found that just one out of seven contracts used by the Turkish company to insure the cargo was real. The rest had been forged.

Bietsan Bakir, the Turkish firm which sold Mercuria the copper, did not respond to requests for comment when contacted by Reuters. More hearings on the case are expected this week.
