Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama's first administration, he added.
Soaring carbon emissions are already causing ice-cap melting and threaten to trigger global flooding, widespread species loss and major disruptions of weather patterns in the near future. "We cannot afford to put off change any longer," said Hansen. "We have to get on a new path within this new administration. We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world. America must take the lead."
Hansen said current carbon levels in the atmosphere were already too high to prevent runaway greenhouse warming. Yet the levels are still rising despite all the efforts of politicians and scientists.
Only the US now had the political muscle to lead the world and halt the rise, Hansen said. Having refused to recognise that global warming posed any risk at all over the past eight years, the US now had to take a lead as the world's greatest carbon emitter and the planet's largest economy. Cap-and-trade schemes, in which emission permits are bought and sold, have failed, he said, and must now be replaced by a carbon tax that will imposed on all producers of fossil fuels. At the same time, there must be a moratorium on new power plants that burn coal - the world's worst carbon emitter.
Hansen - head of the Goddard Institute of Space Studies and winner of the WWF's top conservation award - first warned Earth was in danger from climate change in 1988 and has been the victim of several unsuccessful attempts by the White House administration of George Bush to silence his views.

Plane Crash Lands In Pembroke Pines, Hitting Car
Two people were killed when the small plane they were in crashed in a Pembroke Pines neighborhood Monday afternoon, hitting a car as it went down and leaving the adult and child inside injured, officials said.
Pembroke Pines Police said the crash happened in the area of Southwest 72nd Avenue and Southwest 13th Street.
Surveillance footage from a nearby home showed the plane coming down and hitting the car before slamming into the ground and erupting into a ball of flames.
Aerial footage showed the wreckage of the plane up against an airport fence as firefighters sprayed it down, just across the street from a residential neighborhood. Other pieces of the plane were scattered around the scene.

Sara A. Carter described an “overwhelming” crisis at the U.S. Mexico border, during the Sunday night Fox News show “The Next Revolution” with Steve Hilton. Moreover, law enforcement officials attempting to mitigate the issue feel their “hands are tied,” she said.
Carter recently returned from two border trips to McAllen and Brownsville, Texas and Yuma, Arizona.
“Many of them (migrants)… they’re sitting there, people are crossing the border, turning themselves in, they’re asking them to take off their shoelaces, they’re asking them to remove their belts, they’re basically saying ‘welcome to America, you’re not going to be kicked out, let’s take you and get you processed,'” Carter explained.
She added, “And now the problem is is that it’s overwhelming right now. The facilities are overwhelmed. You have over 9,300 children in the month of February.”
Carter went on to emphasize that the issue is not only dealing with an influx of unaccompanied children but also concerns an influx in family units.
“The border is wide open,” she said. “So you have over 100,000 people in February that entered the United States. Now, this week alone, we’re seeing over 3,500 children, but we’re also seeing family units. And not all of those people are the actual parents or guardians of these children. So we’re seeing a lot of human trafficking as well.”

Federal authorities have charged a Pennsylvania man with assaulting Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick during the Jan. 6 riot in Washington but stopped short of accusing him of causing the officer’s death.
Prosecutors said Monday thatJulian Elie Khater, 32 , of State College, shot bear spray into the face of Sicknick and two other officers as a crowd of rioters mobbed the west side of the building and tore down metal barriers placed to keep them at bay.
Just moments before, they said, Khater had been caught on video pulling a canister of the chemicals from the backpack of another man, George Pierre Tanios, 39, of Morgantown, W.Va., who has also been charged in the case.
“Give me that bear s — ,” Khater told Tanios, according to a description of that footage detailed in court filings.
