Egyptian president orders operation to lift containers from stricken Suez Canal ship

Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has ordered preparations for lightening the cargo of the giant container ship grounded in the Suez Canal, the head of the canal’s authority told local media on Sunday.

The Ever Given container ship has been blocking the waterway since Tuesday and salvage teams have been hoping to free it using dredgers and tugs without unloading any of its cargo.

Mr Sisi said rescue teams should prepare for the possible removal of some of the ship’s 18,300 containers, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chairman, Osama Rabie, told Egypt’s Extra News.

The Ever Given weighs roughly 200,000 metric tons and is capable of carrying 20,000 shipping containers.

Peter Berdowski, the chief executive of Boskalis – one of the salvage firms working on the rescue operation – spoke on the Dutch current affairs programme Nieuwsuur and explained that the weight of the vessel is what is stopping it from simply being pulled free. The mammoth vessel currently has a queue of more than 300 ships waiting to pass.

So far, dredgers have been able to shift 27,000 cubic metres of sand – equating to a dept of 18 meters – but have not yet been able to move the ship, the SCA confirmed in a statement.

However, there are some signs of positive movement, Mr Rabie said.

“The rudder was not moving and it is now moving, the propeller is working now, there was no water underneath the bow, and now there is water under it, and yesterday there was a four-metre deviation in the bow and the stern,” Mr Rabie explained. However, two SCA sources told Reuters that a mass of rock had been found at the bow of the ship, complicating salvage efforts.

Now, attention seems to be turning to the Plan B operation: lightening the load of the Ever Given in the hope that that will enable the ship to shift more significantly. A timeline has not yet been given for this new approach, but Dutch firm Smit Salvage has already been considering whether some of the Ever Given’s 18,300 containers will need to be removed by crane in order to refloat it, with Egypt’s president giving permission for this course of action.

Shipping rates for oil product tankers have roughly doubled since the ship became stranded, and the blockage has disrupted global supply chains, threatening costly delays for companies already dealing with Covid-19 restrictions.

If the blockage drags on, shippers may decide to reroute their cargoes around the Cape of Good Hope, adding about two weeks to journeys and extra fuel costs.

Myanmar coup latest: Japan, S. Korea join junta condemnation

Sunday, March 28

8:47 a.m. Among envoys of Western governments condemning the military's brutality against unarmed civilians, which claimed at least 114 lives on Saturday, U.S. ambassador Thomas Vajda said on social media: "This bloodshed is is horrifying," adding "Myanmar's people have spoken clearly: they do not want to live under military rule." British foreign minister Dominic Raab said the killing of unarmed civilians and children marked "a new low," while the EU delegation to Myanmar said that Saturday would "forever stay engraved as a day of terror and dishonour."

8:22 a.m. In an unprecedented move, defense chiefs from 12 countries Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, the U.K. and the U.S. issue a joint statement condemning the "use of lethal force against unarmed people by the Myanmar Armed Forces and associated security services." The condemnation is a humiliation for the Burmese junta's leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who described Myanmar's military as "guardians of the people" at a vast parade of troops and military hardware rolled out to mark the annual Armed Forces Day on Saturday. The statement says: "A professional military follows international standards for conduct and is responsible for protecting not harming the people it serves."

— U.S. Embassy Burma (@USEmbassyBurma) March 28, 2021

"We urge the Myanmar Armed Forces to cease violence and work to restore respect and credibility with the people of Myanmar that it has lost through its actions."

For Japan and South Korea both of which had warm ties with Myanmar's military this is the first time their military chiefs have joined western counterparts to condemn the actions of another Asian military force on human rights issues.

Iraq Discussing $7 Billion Energy Deal With Total, Minister Says

Iraq is discussing a “giant” agreement with French oil giant Total SE to build large infrastructure installations, develop oil fields and produce gas, Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar told Asharq News in an interview that aired on Saturday. The minister said he expected the contract to be finalized before July. The relationship with Total will be based on targeting low-carbon industry and capturing all flaring gas, and is set to produce 1GW of solar energy in the first stage. A specialized team from the oil ministry is leading these discussions with Total. “The agreement is giant, and the volume of the investment exceeds $7 billion,” the minister said. Abdul Jabbar said conditions, including the political and administrative decisions for the economic model that protects the rights of both parties, had been hammered out already.

In January, Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding with Total CEO Patrick Pouyanne on capturing natural gas, clean energy and infrastructure. Talks between Iraq and Total were first reported in October. Iraq this year is also expected to ink a deal to build an oil export pipeline from the southern province of Basra to Jordan’s Aqba port on the Red Sea. A framework agreement may be signed before mid-April, Abdul Jabbar said. The minister said Iraq will lower its gasoline and gasoil imports by 50% in 2021 and by 90% in 2022. Iraq will need a very limited volume of gasoil imports to support power generation, he said.

Iraq’s current gas output stands at 1.5b scf/d and will reach 4b scf/d in 2025. The country in 2010 built gas-fired turbines to generate 20GW, and those plants need 5b scf/d of gas. Iraq now buys gas from Iran and is trying to diversify imports from Qatar, Kazakhstan and other producers, Abdul Jabbar said.
