Myanmar coup latest: Armed ethnic groups vow to defend people from junta

Tuesday, March 30

11:00 p.m. The Karen National Union, one of Myanmar's biggest armed ethnic groups, joins other such armies in declaring it will defend itself from government troops. . "There is no legitimate reason to kill, harm and terrorize innocent people, including women, elders and children, in the dead of night," the statement says. The KNU urges the international community "to cut all ties with [Myanmar's armed forces], including military and economic relationships."

2:10 p.m. The Committee Representing Union Parliament (CRPH) issues a statement welcoming an announcement by three armed ethnic insurgent groups denouncing the ongoing military violence and pledging to protect the people. "CRPH has called on them to work together for the success of the revolution and establishment of a federal democratic union," the CRPH statement says.

11:30 a.m. Ethnic armed groups of the northern alliance Arakan Army, Ta'ang National Liberation Army and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army issue a joint statement saying they "strongly condemn the actions of the Myanmar military against unarmed civilians." The three groups demanded the "Myanmar military to stop killing and violating [the rights of] unarmed civilians and to find a political solution." They also announced that they will defend the people if the military continues its brutality against civilians.

10:30 a.m. The Committee Representing Union Parliament (CRPH), comprised mainly of former National League for Democracy lawmakers who were elected last November, is asking people to donate money through crowdfunding to support the resistance. So far, the organization has raised $9.2 million, according to a crowdfunding website.

9:00 a.m. Activists call for a "courage strike day," urging people to throw trash on the streets to express their opposition to the coup.

Monday, March 29

11:30 p.m. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres comments on the weekend bloodshed in Myanmar. "My message to the Myanmar military is simple: Stop the killings," Guterres tells a news conference. "Stop the repression of the demonstrations; release the political prisoners; and return power to those who have a legitimate right to exercise it."

9:30 p.m. The U.S. has stopped all trade engagement with Myanmar under a 2013 trade and investment agreement that was adopted during the Southeast Asian nation's earlier transition to democracy. This engagement will remain suspended "until the return of a democratically elected government," the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative says in a statement. The move represents a broadening of the U.S. government's response to the crisis in Myanmar after the deadliest weekend of violence so far. Reconsidering preferential treatment for Myanmar exports under the Generalized System of Preferences is another option, according to the statement. "The United States supports the people of Burma in their efforts to restore a democratically elected government, which has been the foundation of Burma's economic growth and reform," says Ambassador Katherine Tai, the U.S. trade representative. Under the 2013 agreement, Myanmar committed to working with the U.S. on "programs to support economic reforms, inclusive development, and integration into the global trading system," according to the statement. Junta leader Gen. Ming Aung Hlaing had said in early February that the change in government in Myanmar would result in no change in economic policy or the country's stance toward foreign investment.

In light of the Bankers trying to tamp down expectations on how this is going to impact them here is some additional context for the Archegos Capital Margin Call and selling -btw that was in here on Saturday…way before they eben knew the name Archegos next door in the notables.

JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Shitibank and Bank of ~~Italy~~ America have no room to talk about how any group of derivatives could "impact" themselves or anyone else FTM.

look at wut they all carry (and have for a long time) also remember this is only what they are required to report-these amounts are likely much higher

Quarterly Report on Bank Trading and Derivatives Activities-Q4 2020

This released on March 23 for Q4 2020 and takes it to Dec. 31st 2020.

These positions have changed but we won't know by how much until almost the end of Q2 2021 when Q1 2021 report issued.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) reported trading revenue of U.S. commercial banks and savings associations of $6.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020. The fourth quarter trading revenue was $588.0 million, or 8.5 percent, less than the previous quarter. In the report, Quarterly Report on Bank Trading and Derivatives Activities, the OCC noted that trading revenue in fourth quarter 2020 decreased by 11.0 percent compared with the $7.1 billion reported in fourth quarter 2019.

The OCC reported that:

  • while four large banks held 88.4 percent of the total banking industry notional amount of derivatives-cap#2, a total of 1,382 insured U.S. commercial banks and savings associations held derivatives at the end of fourth quarter 2020.

Not news but fttdk

  • derivative contracts remained concentrated in interest rate products, which represented 70.8 percent of total derivative notional amounts.

  • the percentage of centrally cleared derivatives transactions decreased quarter-over-quarter to 35.0 percent in fourth quarter 2020.

JP Morgan with a $3.745 T difference lower from last report (sure right Jamie!!)

Goldman Sachs with a $3.195 T change lower…assets down from 277,943 to 271,652 (in millions of $)

Shitibank also lowered it's amount by $1.412 T

As you can see the differnences from Q to Q are pretty laughable-they still have the bulk of those positions in OTC swaps-highlighted in yellow on the right

That is where the bulk of these lowered amounts have come from.

Brazil military chiefs quit as Bolsonaro seeks their support

The leaders of all three branches of Brazil’s armed forces jointly resigned Tuesday following President Jair Bolsonaro’s replacement of the defense minister, causing widespread apprehension of a military shakeup to serve the president’s political interests.

The Defense Ministry reported the resignations — apparently unprecedented since at least the end of military rule 36 years ago — in a statement released without giving reasons. Replacements were not named. But analysts expressed fears the president, increasingly under pressure, was moving to assert greater control over the military. “Since 1985, we haven’t had news of such clear intervention of the president with regard to the armed forces,” said Carlos Melo, a political science professor at Insper University in Sao Paulo. Bolsonaro, a conservative former army captain who has often praised Brazil’s former period of military dictatorship, has relied heavily on current and former soldiers to staff key Cabinet positions since taking office in January 2019, but Melo said the military itself has so far refrained from politics. “Will this resistance continue? That’s the question,” Melo said.

The announcement came after the heads of the army, navy and air force met with the new defense minister, Gen. Walter Souza Braga Netto, on Tuesday morning. Braga Netto’s first statement on the new job showed he is alligned with Bolsonaro’s views for the armed forces. The incoming defense minister, unlike his predecessor, celebrated the 1964-1985 military dictatorship that killed and tortured thousands of Brazilians.

“The armed forces ended taking the responsibility of pacifying the country, facing the challenges to reorganize it and secure the democratic liberties that today we enjoy,” said Braga Netto, who did not discuss the departure of the military chiefs. “The 1964 movement is part of Brazil’s historic trajectory. And as such the events of that March 31st must be understood and celebrated.” A retired army general who has a relationship with the three commanders as well as with Braga Netto told The Associated Press that “there was an embarrassing circumstance so they all resigned.” He agreed to discuss the matter only if not quoted by name, expressing fear of retribution. Bolsonaro on Monday carried out a shake-up of top Cabinet positions that was initially seen as a response to demands for a course correction by lawmakers, diplomats and economists, particularly over his handling of the pandemic that has caused more than 300,000 deaths in Brazil. That included the replacement of Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo e Silva, who said in his resignation letter that he had “preserved the armed forces as state institutions,” a nod at his effort to keep generals out of politics.

Bolsonaro has often bristled at the checks and balances imposed by other branches of government and has attended protests targeting the Supreme Court and Congress. He has also criticized the Supreme Court for upholding local governments’ rights to adopt pandemic restrictions that he adamantly opposes, arguing that the economic effects are worse than the disease itself. His recent slide in popularity, and the sudden likelihood that he will face leftist former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 presidential election, has analysts saying he is looking to the armed forces for support.

Not AF Joe-some color

Putting this in prior to Joe departing for Pittsburgh tomorrow-we know this because there were already 2 C-17 Globemasters with the T in at Pittsburgh Int'l plus an article confirming but giving no details.

See here

>>73950, >>74139 pb

Joe has not used Air Force One as call sign on every single trip he has been aboard the 747 and 757's. He also was not picked up on a 99th Airlift Squad AC as POTUS was upon heading to DC for the 2017 Innaug. Fauxtus was delivered to DC in a private chartered AC-not one that would befit an incoming rightly elected President.

There has been some confusion over the use of AF1 for Fauxtus (Biden) and POTUS.

This pf has AF1 used for the last time by POTUS on 030220 for a trip to Charlotte, NC for a rally the night before Super Tuesday.

These are the last caps I have with POTUS using AF1 as a call sign-cap#2-3

AF1 was used on the 747 for the European trip the week before as well-cap#4 approaching Ramstein AFB on 022520

Since March 2nd, 2020 I have not seen AF1 used as a dedicated call sign for either-if anyone has a cap of POTUS using AF1 as a call sign after March 2nd 2020 please provide.

i think this request was made in general and via soc. media and I have not seen one.

On October 22nd 2020 this pf observed the AF1 call sign flashed once while the 747 on ground at John Wayne Airport in Orange Cty CA-during a stop-over for a fundraiser. It arrived from an overnight at Las Vegas. I could not catch a cap for it but I did see it once.

Back to Not AF1 Joe-the current administration can (and should have) put this entire issue to bed with a display of AF1 on the AC transporting this current occupant.

The fact that they do not is down to two reasons: they can't (this) or won't (why wouldn't you?).

The AC's transporting any POTUS are required to be flown by US Air Force pilots and they are usually responsible for the input of the call sign-this is true for almost any AC.

I think wut we have here is that these pilots (and many moar FTM) know that Joe is not a duly-elected POTUS so they are not going to input the AF1 call sign as it would not be a true representation of who is actually on-board. Add in the various non-salute issue, the backs of the military being displayed to the passing motorcade on Jan 20th and you just about have a story that tells you that Joe in not being recognized by the 82nd Airborne Wing that is responsible for transportation-they are just playing a role.

China sharply reduces elected seats in Hong Kong legislature

China has sharply reduced the number of directly elected seats in Hong Kong’s legislature in a setback for the territory's already beleaguered democracy movement. The changes were announced Tuesday after a two-day meeting of China’s top legislature. The legislature will be expanded to 90 seats, and only 20 will be elected by the public. Currently, half of the 70-seat legislature35 seatsis directly elected.

The move is part of a two-phase effort to rein in political protest and opposition in Hong Kong, which is part of China but has had a more liberal political system as a former British colony. China imposed a national security law on Hong Kong last year and is following up this year with a revamp of the electoral process. The crackdown comes in the wake of months of pro-democracy protests in 2019 that brought hundreds of thousands to the streets and turned violent as the government resisted the movement's demands. "It’s a very sad day for Hong Kong. The election system is completely dismantled,” said former lawmaker and Democratic Party member Emily Lau. “They are going to get rid of opposition voices because under this new system, which is so oppressive and restrictive, I don’t think any self-respecting individual will want to take part,” Lau said.

China's top legislature, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, amended Hong Kong's constitution to pave the way for the changes. The Hong Kong government is now tasked with revising its electoral laws and holding an election. In the current 70-member legislature, voters elect half the members and the other half are chosen by constituencies representing various professions and interest groups. Many of the constituencies lean pro-Beijing, ensuring that wing a majority in the legislature. The new body will have 20 elected members, 30 chosen by the constituencies and 40 by an Election Committee which also chooses the city's leader. The committee, which will be expanded from 1,200 to 1,500 members, is dominated by supporters of the central government in Beijing. Election hopefuls will undergo vetting by the national security police and a committee that oversees national security in the city. A new separate body will also be established to review the qualifications of candidates for office in Hong Kong to ensure the city is governed by “patriots,” in the language of the central government.

The full National People’s Congress rubber-stamped a proposal in mid-March that authorized the Standing Committee to amend the Basic Law, the constitution that has governed Hong Kong since the former British colony was handed over to China in 1997 under a “one country, two systems” framework that promised it semi-autonomy for 50 years.
