Buttigieg sets aside $230m for US port developments

Kim Biggar

April 2, 2021

US secretary of transportation Pete Buttigieg this week announced the availability of $230m in grant funding for port and intermodal infrastructure-related projects. The funding, provided through the Port Infrastructure Development Program, is primarily intended for ocean and Great Lakes ports, and will be awarded to state and port-authority applicants for projects worth not less than $1m. Generally, the federal cost share of any project is not to exceed 80%, although some categories of projects will be eligible to receive more than 80% funding.

Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to support projects that strengthen and modernize port infrastructure and support America’s long-term economic vitality. The review process will also consider how proposed projects address climate change and environmental justice impacts and advance racial equity, reduce barriers to opportunity, and meet challenges faced by rural areas.

To provide technical assistance to applicants, the Department of Transportation will host a series of webinars about the grant-application process, including information on best practices for preparing a benefit-cost analysis. The deadline to submit an application for the program is July 30, 2021.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Blasts American Airlines: ‘Texans Are Fed Up with Corporations that Don’t Share Our Values’

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) is “stunned” American Airlines issued a statement opposing an election integrity bill, Senate Bill 7, following passage early Thursday morning, as the CEO admittedly did not read the legislation.

“I am stunned that American Airlines would put out a statement saying ‘we are strongly opposed to this bill’ [Senate Bill 7],” the lieutenant governor said, “just minutes after their government relations representative called my office and admitted that neither he nor the American Airlines CEO had actually read the legislation.”

Patrick said he heard the same outcries from corporations in 2011 — claims that Texas passed a “voter suppression” bill when it passed a photo voter ID bill. He said the opposite of voter suppression occurred.

“Voter turnout in Texas soared from 7,993,851 in 2012 to 11,144,040 in 2020, a 39 percent increase. Gubernatorial election voter turnout has increased by 76 percent since photo voter ID was passed,” he said in his statement.

The Texan stated:

Texans are fed up with corporations that don’t share our values trying to dictate public policy. The majority of Texans support maintaining the integrity of our elections, which is why I made it a priority this legislative session. Senate Bill 7 includes comprehensive reforms that will ensure voting in Texas is consistent statewide and secure.

Patrick went on to say that in 2017, American Airlines “led the fight to try to force us to allow boys to play girls sports in Texas and take away their scholarships. They are probably still fighting for that today and it is likely they have not read Bill 29 either:”

The Texas State Senate passed Senate Bill 7 early Thursday morning. Republican State Sen. Bryan Hughes (R), who authored the legislation, describes it as a bill aimed to make it “easy to vote and hard to cheat.”

American Airlines released a statement Thursday afternoon saying, “Earlier this morning, the Texas State Senate passed legislation with provisions that limit voting access.

The statement continued:

To make American’s stance clear: We are strongly opposed to this bill and others like it. As a Texas-based business, we must stand up for the rights of our team members and customers who call Texas home, and honor the sacrifices made by generations of Americans to protect and expand the right to vote.

Voting is the hallmark of our democracy, and is the foundation of our great country. We value the democratic process and believe every eligible American should be allowed to exercise their right to vote, no matter which political party or candidate they support.

The airline said it knows how difficult it was to fight for the right to exercise the constitutional right to vote. “Any legislation dealing with how elections are conducted must ensure ballot integrity and security while making it easier to vote, not harder,” expressing the belief that “we should break down barriers to diversity, equity and inclusion in our society – not create them.”

Nothing To See Here: Microsoft Files Patent To Mine Cryptos Using Human Brain Activity

by Tyler Durden

Thursday, Apr 01, 2021 - 11:20 PM

Today in "we are totally not heading head-first into a completely dystopian future at a billion miles an hour" news…

Microsoft is reportedly proposing a method to generate cryptocurrency by "monitoring people's brain activity and other personal biometric data," according to a new report in The Independent.

The company has reportedly filed for a patent called "Cryptocurrency System Using Body Activity Data" which details how a person could attach sensors to their body to "earn" cryptocurrency through mining. Microsoft is apparently not just satisfied with computers doing the crypto mining, they are pushing for mining via a "human body activity associated with a task".

The patent states: "For example, a brain wave or body heat emitted from the user when the user performs the task provided by an information service provider, such as viewing an advertisement or using certain internet services, can be used in the mining process."

It continues: "Instead of massive computation work required by some conventional cryptocurrency systems, data generated based on the body activity of the user can be proof-of-work, and therefore, a user can solve the computationally difficult problem unconsciously."

Such a system would require "hooking up" a device to sensors on the body that "detect the activity required of the user to generate the cryptocurrency." The report says that "body fluid flow" and "organ activity and movement" are two such body functions, along with brain waves and body heat, that could be monitored.

The patent lists 28 concepts for using such a system to mine for cryptocurrency.

CIVITAS panel on COVID-19, 20 March 2021

https://youtu.be/en2Bve38bBk

I disagree with the premise that we know a lot about COVID-19, if that means we have knowledge drawn from PCR results.

SEROLOGY tests are based on PCR.

What can we really know about a virus that has not been isolated/purified? Which has no defintive symptom or set of symptoms that forms a cosnistent clinical diagnosis? Nothing much is known about this 'invisible enemy'.

On the other hand, the effects of the government restrictions are documented and the excess mortality that we are beinning to see now, is attributable to restrictions rather than this or that virus. But sorting it alloujt is going to be next to impossible. Means that the invisible enemy will fester forever.

The panel discussed the latter, not so much the virology re the restrictions. This is going to be the worse mess possible for all researchers. It all began with lousy policies surrounding PCR ITSELF.

The antibodies that may be produced after infection with SARS-CoV-2 will not necessarily protect you from getting sick again and it's not known how long they will remain in your body.
