JPMorgan Relaxes Mortgage Curbs With U.S. Housing Prices on Rise

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is going on the “offensive” in mortgages as home prices rise across the country, said Marianne Lake, the bank’s chief executive officer for consumer lending. “In the case of home lending in particular, we’ve walked back some of our constraints in a reflection of the fact that we’ve seen home prices continue to improve,” Lake said at a virtual investor conference Monday. “We have loosened some of our criteria there,” she said, without elaborating.

Low interest rates and a “generally solid economy” are fueling a surge in refinancing activity and propelling the purchase market, which is estimated at about $1.3 trillion this year, Lake said, adding that homeownership rates are up about 4% from last year, and up 5% among customers between the ages of 35 and 44, many of whom may be migrating away from denser urban centers amid the coronavirus pandemic. “Just to put that in context, in terms of the purchase market, that would be similar in size to the housing boom back in 2005 and 2006,” Lake said. “There’s no question that the last decade has been a quite challenging decade for home lending for the industry, and we were not an exception. A lot of that is in the rear-view mirror. I feel like we’re more on the offensive than the defensive.”

Lake, who’s overseen all of consumer lending for about 18 months, has been imparting a simple strategy to middle managers: Cut costs and sell more mortgages to “core” customers who already have a primary banking relationship with the bank. JPMorgan has lowered headcount and sought to automate and digitize its home-loan business to appeal to more borrowers. Signs of a turnaround in home-loan originations were showing even before the pandemic hit, with the part of JPMorgan’s retail business that offers mortgages to consumers either when they walk into a branch, or when they call or apply online becoming profitable in the first month of the year for the first January in five years, Bloomberg reported in February.

JPMorgan had $1.71 billion in revenue from its home-lending business in the third quarter, up 17% from a year earlier. Firmwide, origination volume rose 23% this year through September, to $96.4 billion.

With coronavirus cases rising globally and questions about the path of the economic recovery, Lake said the bank is closely monitoring the environment. JPMorgan executives will be keeping an eye on whether the pandemic continues to compel younger customers to flee crowded urban centers for areas where homes offer more space to work from home. “We are seeing that that younger cohort of customers is possibly the customer that is looking to migrate away from the more dense urban centers to less dense centers –particularly we’re seeing that in Manhattan,” Lake said. “I suspect we will see more of that. It’s a bit of a watch item rather than a reality.”

“They Took a Victory from Donald Trump and They Called it a Lie…This Country is Under Attack.” –Attorney Lin Wood On Why He Joined Trump’s Legal Team

Top attorney Lin Wood spoke at a rally in Georgia on Saturday about why he joined the Trump team in its fight against Democrat, Big Media and Big Tech lies and attempts to steal the election for Joe Biden. He was outstanding.

Wood began his speech on why he was joining the Trump team with this:

I was sitting around Tuesday night watching the election returns, I’ve loved politics all my life, since I first voted in 1972. And I saw what I assumed was going to happen. I saw President Trump building up what I believed was going to be almost an historic landslide victory. Then all the sudden every network, including FOX News, started doing what they do best – they started lying to the American public. And they took a victory from Donald Trump and they called it a lie. They took a defeat from Joe Biden and lied and said he won. And they sent you to bed, turning off the count of the vote so you could wake up the next morning like I did and go ‘What happened?’

What happened? When I was asked by President Trump to help him in Georgia and perhaps other places around this country, I said ‘yeah’…

…I said yes because there is a cloud over this country. And if we don’t get it right and we don’t figure out what happened that night, that cloud is going to get darker and darker until it turns into a storm cloud and we’re going to lose our freedom. So it is time to fight back…

… This is a constitutional crisis and if we don’t fix it and find out what happened and get it right, we’re going to lose our constitutional rights…

…43 years of practicing law I never dreamed the day would come where I would be in the United States of America and there would be censorship. If they take away your right to free speech what are they going to take away next?…

…Let’s find out what happened. This is about truth versus lies…

…If you don’t think this was planned, enjoy losing your freedom under the Kamala Harris Administration. And she’s not going to be running this country. There are people who are going to running this country who are rich, they’re globalists, some don’t even live here, a lot of them are involved with foreign countries.

It’s time to tell the truth and be truthful and face the truth. This country is under attack. This was nothing more than a revolution. They’re trying to take away your rights. They’re trying to take away your Constitution. They’re trying to take away ultimately your freedom. Don’t let them do it. Donald Trump is for the people that’s why the people voted for him…

… [Trump] he’s troubled because he sees what being done to the people…

…I’d like to see the Republicans stand up for this President. I’ve watched him for 4 years and he’s been out their fighting for the people and he’s almost always been fighting for himself….

… It’s time for us to fight for Donald Trump.

Moar on Scytl

Scytl was founded in 2001,[1] and grew out of a cryptography research project[2] at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The name is a reference to the scytale, an ancient cryptographic tool.[3]

It became profitable in 2006, and in 2014, it reported 70% annual revenue growth.[4] It bought SOE Software in 2012.[1] It intended to go public in 2016, but delayed the IPO because of poor performance in developing markets and decided to focus on developed country markets as well as on election solutions for non-government customers.[5]

In 2017, Scytl reported having 600 employees, of which a third were in Barcelona. In 2016, it divided itself into three companies:[6]

  • the original Scytl Secure Electronic Voting, which develops voting software,

  • Scytl Voting Hardware SL, which develops voting hardware, owned by Scytl and an anonymous Dubai-based investor, and

  • Civiti (formerly OpenSeneca), which focuses on civic participation services.

Scytl was funded by venture capital. It raised $9 million in 2006 from investors including Balderton Capital and Nauta Capital, and $104 million in 2014 in multiple funding rounds from investors including Vulcan Capital, Sapphire Ventures, Vy Capital, Adams Street Partners and Industry Ventures.[4]

The company's systems have been implemented in numerous countries,[7][8] but problems have cropped up over the years in some of its solutions and voting systems, including those used in Australia, Ecuador, Norway and Switzerland.[9]

On 11 May 2020, facing debts of over 75 million euro, Scytl initiated bankruptcy proceedings with a view to sell its business to the U.S. investment fund Sandton Capital.[10] On 2 June 2020, a Spanish court declared Scytl bankrupt and started the process of auctioning off its assets.

Vulcan Capital: Luke Sikora from Vulcan sits on Scytl's board (https://www.scytl.com/en/team/directors/luke-sikora/)

→ Luke Sikora has been closely involved in Vulcan’s investments in Alibaba, Avvo, Dataminr, Grab, Intercom, Loft, Magic Leap, ScaleFactor, Scytl, Souq, Spotify, TraceLink, TrueCar and Uber.

→ He also worked at Menlo Park Office of Battery Ventures, where he focused on growth equity and buyout investments in the software and internet space.

→ Vulcan Capital has public investments in Amazon, Cintas, Microsoft, Netflix, Square, and more. (https://capital.vulcan.com/Investments.aspx)

Sandton Capital: It has operations worldwide

→ Robert Rice and Rael Nurick are both listed as directors of the company
