Uber, Lyft partner with AI company putting tablets in rideshares to show ads, track passengers’ facial expressions

Uber and Lyft have teamed up with an artificial intelligence (AI) company to provide 10,000 drivers with digital tablets to track riders’ facial expressions and catalog information as they passengers react to advertisements.

Alfi, an AI platform that seeks to deliver “the right content to the right person at the right time in a respectful and ethical manner,” announced its deal with the two apps last week, according to a June 17 press release.

The deal is part of a larger program in which Alfi drivers are given free tablets with built-in cameras, which will be used to “recognize the demographics of the rider” and display “personalized content as well as advertisements.”

Drivers who agree to participate in the program are promised a revenue share “up to $350” per month if passengers engage with the advertisements and content shown.

“This is only the beginning. We are going to light up every major city in the USA,” said Florentino Diaz, Alfi Project Manager, Accesswire reported. “There is no other choice when it comes to accurate brand targeting and real data reporting. Nobody does this while remaining privacy compliant.”

“We have a massive operation unfolding in Miami today with hundreds of Ubers and Lyfts installing Alfi tablets,” Florentino continued. “It’s an epic event and marks the start of our nationwide rollout. What’s most rewarding, is we can help rideshare drivers increase their income and help create employment opportunities with community outreach programs for students.”

Juan Carlos, a Miami-area Uber driver, said in a statement, “This is a great opportunity for all of us rideshare drivers. Alfi not only gives us extra revenue, but it is a great tool for our customers. We can share places to eat, places to shop, and things to do around Miami. I absolutely love my Alfi!”

In a second press release, additional details about the program, including the use of Alfi’s facial recognition to tailor ads “by age, gender, geography, demographics, brand behavior and interests, all in real-time.” The company said the technology can “change and run ads remotely” to immediately adjust content “in a responsible and privacy-compliant manner.”

“Alfi provides data-rich reporting functionality that informs the advertisers that someone viewed their ad, the number of views, and each viewer’s reaction to the ad. Increasingly, advertisers are demanding improved performance and capabilities from the ad technology they utilize. Alfi delivers for advertisers with analytics, accountability, transparency, proof of engagement and actual impressions,” the company’s press release stated.

"I'm Totally Screwed": Western Digital Tells Customers To Unplug Web-Connected Hard Drives After Data Mysteriously Deleted

https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/im-totally-screwed-western-digital-tells-customers-unplug-web-connected-hard-drives

Hard drive manufacturer Western Digital recommended that My Disk external hard drive owners unplug them from the internet until further notice, after a flood of customers complained in a support forum that all their data had been mysteriously deleted, according to Ars Technica.

"I have a WD mybook live connected to my home LAN and worked fine for years," wrote the person who started the thread. "I have just found that somehow all the data on it is gone today, while the directories seems there but empty. Previously the 2T volume was almost full but now it shows full capacity."

"All my data is gone too," another user responded. "I am totally screwed without that data… years of it."

Multiple users reported that the data loss coincided with a factory reset that was performed on their devices. One person posted a log that showed unexplained behavior occurring on Wednesday:

Jun 23 15:14:05 MyBookLive factoryRestore.sh: begin script:

Jun 23 15:14:05 MyBookLive shutdown[24582]: shutting down for system reboot

“I believe this is the culprit of why this happens,” the person wrote. “No one was even home to use this drive at this time.” -Ars Technica

While the standard My Book storage device connects to computers via USB, the My Book Live uses an ethernet cable to access the local network, from which owners can access their files remotely and make configuration changes through the Western Digital cloud. The company stopped supporting the product in 2015.

In response to the forum thread, Western Digital advised customers to disconnect their My Book Live devices while the company investigates.

The incident is under active investigation from Western Digital. We do not have any indications of a breach or compromise of Western Digital cloud services or systems.

We have determined that some My Book Live devices have been compromised by a threat actor. In some cases, this compromise has led to a factory reset that appears to erase all data on the device. The My Book Live device received its final firmware update in 2015.

At this time, we are recommending that customers disconnect their My Book Live devices from the Internet to protect their data on the device.

We have issued the following statement to our customers and will provide updates to this thread when they are available: https://community.wd.com/t/action-required-on-my-book-live-and-my-book-live-duo/268147

Ars Technica suggests that "Reading between the lines, Western Digital’s statement seems to be saying that customer accounts were individually compromised. The advice to unplug devices while the investigation continues is warranted, and users should follow it as soon as possible."

"It is very scary and devastating that someone can do factory restore on my drive without any permission granted from the end user," wrote one user. "I need a remedy to this issue immediately as this is already incurring a great cost to me."

Hungary Told To Repeal Law Banning LGBT Promotion To Children "Or Else Leave EU"

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/hungary-told-repeal-law-banning-lgbt-promotion-children-or-else-leave-eu

EU leadership is now fanatically dictating that Hungary and its 'defiant' prime minister Vickor Orban must bow the knee to the Pride Flag or else "must leave" the European Union.

Quoting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, The Telegraph describes massive pushback against a new Hungarian law which seeks to prevent the public promotion of homosexuality and transgenderism in front of children and minors:

Mark Rutte, the prime minister of the Netherlands, said Hungary either "must leave" the EU or repeal the law, which bans TV shows and other content seen as championing LGBT lifestyles for the under-18s.

However, some eastern European governments refused to join 17 of the bloc’s 27 countries in a rare joint statement condemning a fellow member state.

Other EU leaders, like European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, have been claiming that the law actively discriminates against LGBT people.

However, defenders of the Hungarian law have pointed out it puts decision-making on presenting these issues to children in the hands of parents and family members. Orban himself, for example, said the law and policy is fundamentally about "defending the rights of the kids and the parents" and is not about discrimination.

Orban said this week at the summit: “Homosexuality was punished, and I fought for their freedom and their rights,” concluding that "I am defending the rights of the homosexual guys. But this law is not about that."

But the EU summit which met this is acting as if it's a declaration of war on human rights, and is vowing to respond accordingly:

Western leaders have said they will bring Hungary "to its knees" over a law banning the promotion of homosexuality in schools at a bitter EU summit on Thursday.Continue…
