Fire on PEMEX Oil Platform Kills One, Five Missing

Mike Schuler

August 23, 2021

A fire on a Pemex oil platform in the southern Gulf of Mexico killed one and five others are missing.

PetrĂłleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) reports that the fire occurred Sunday on the E-Ku A2 Platform, located in the Bay of Campeche at the Ku-Maloob-Zaap field.

Pemex reported that three of its employees were injured and one died. Another three were injured and three are missing belonging to the oil services company Cotemar, while two workers from Bufete de Monitoreo de Condiciones e Integridad (BMPI) are also missing.

Pemex said the fire was brought under control at about 4:30 p.m. local time on Sunday after personnel closed valves that resulted in the fire burning out.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

“PEMEX expresses its sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased person and provides support to the workers affected by this incident, as well as their families,” PEMEX said in a statement.

Sunday’s incident is the latest to hit PEMEX facilities in the Gulf of Mexico, the last being the infamous “fire eye” in early July. There were no injuries or casualties in that accident.

Current production at the Ku-Maloob-Zaap field is about 640,000 barrels per day.

==Pentagon Set to Make Pfizer Vaccine Mandatory After FDA Approval

Reuters==

August 23, 2021

WASHINGTON, Aug 23 (Reuters) – The Pentagon is preparing to issue updated guidance to require all U.S. service personnel to be vaccinated after Monday’s approval of the Pfizer Inc /BioNTech SE COVID-19 vaccine by the Food and Drug Administration, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

Kirby told a briefing the completion date for vaccine guidance was still being worked on.

The FDA granted full approval on Monday to the vaccine, which had earned emergency-use authorization in December, making it the first to secure such validation as U.S. health authorities struggle to win over vaccine skeptics.

Asked if similar guidance could be given for other COVID-19 vaccines, Kirby replied: “Right now we’re focused on the Pfizer vaccine because of the FDA approval that came in this morning.”

The Pentagon said this month it would seek President Joe Biden’s approval by mid-September to require 1.3 million military members to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

After setting COVID-19 rules for federal workers, Biden last month directed the Pentagon to look into “how and when” it would require members of the military to take the vaccine. Biden said then he strongly supported the Pentagon’s plan to add the COVID-19 vaccine to the list of required vaccinations for service members by mid-September.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said the deadline could be moved up if the FDA approved the vaccine earlier.

The U.S. military said this month that around half the U.S. armed forces are already fully vaccinated, a number that climbs significantly when counting only active-duty troops and excluding National Guard and Reserve members.

Vaccination rates are highest in the Navy, which suffered from a high-profile outbreak last year aboard an aircraft carrier. About 73% of sailors are fully vaccinated, compared with the U.S. national average of about 60% of adults ages 18 and over.

Because U.S. service members are generally younger and fitter, relatively few of them have died as a result of COVID-19 – just 28 in total, according to Pentagon data. (Reporting by Idrees Ali and David Brunnstrom; editing by Jonathan Oatis)

Medicine Regulators need to explain how they concluded the benefits outweigh the risks in giving the Covid-19 Vaccines to children

The Pfizer Covid-19 injection has been given emergency use authorisation to be used in children over the age of 12 in the UK by the MHRA, whilst the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) have decided that vulnerable children over the age of 12 and all 16 and 17 year olds should be offered the Pfizer jab. Both authorities claim that their decision is based on the benefits outweighing any potential risks.

If this is the case, then the MHRA and JCVI need to explain how they came to this conclusion when just 1 in every 1.7 million children have died with Covid-19 in 18 months, whilst 1 in every 9 children suffered a serious adverse reaction to the Pfizer vaccine in the small and short clinical trial which left them unable to perform daily activities.

According to official NHS data published weekly, between March 2020 and the 11th August 2021 a total of 3,743 people have died with Covid-19 in UK hospitals who had no underlying conditions, whilst 85,410 have allegedly died with Covid-19 who had other serious underlying conditions.

These conditions include ailments such as chronic kidney disease, chronic neurological disease, chronic pulmonary disease, heart disease, and dementia.

UPDATE

Five Dead, Two Missing After Fire on Pemex Offshore Platform

Published Aug 23, 2021 4:42 PM by The Maritime Executive

A fire on a platform at Pemex's Ku-Maloob-Zaap offshore complex last weekend left six workers injured and at least one dead, the company reported Monday. As of Monday morning, five contractors remain missing. [Updated: As of Monday afternoon, Pemex has confirmed five dead, six injured and two missing.]

The fire broke out at about 1510 hours on Sunday, and the platform was shut in to contain the blaze. It was under control by 1630, according to Pemex.

Early on Monday, Pemex reported that three of its workers and three contractors from COTEMAR were injured in the blaze, along with one Pemex worker who sustained a nervous breakdown. Three COTEMAR employees and two contractors from Bufete de Monitoreo de Condiciones e Integridad (Conditions and Integrity Monitoring Firm) were still missing.

"PEMEX expresses its sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased person and provides support to the workers affected by this incident, as well as their families," the company said in a statement. "A root cause investigation will be conducted to determine the origin of the fire."

According to Pemex director Octavio Romero, the fire and shut-in have had a massive effect on Mexico's oil output, cutting back production by more than 420,000 barrels per day. Ku-Maloob-Zaap is Pemex's most valuable and productive offshore asset. Production should be back up within days, Romero said.

The blaze was the second fire at Ku-Maloob-Zaap in a month, following a leak in a 12-inch gas pipeline that resulted in a roiling cauldron of burning natural gas next to the Ku-Charly platform. After last month's fire, no injuries were reported and no evacuation was required, Pemex said. Angel Carrizales, the executive director of Mexico's Security, Energy and Environment Agency, said that the gas line rupture did not result in any release of oil.

According to a 2016 report produced by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and The Guardian, 190 workers and contractors for Pemex (onshore and offshore) were killed in fires, explosions and other accidents over a seven-year period beginning in 2009. One of the company's offshore facilities burned twice in as many years: the AbkatĂşn-Alpha platform caught fire in April 2015, killing seven, and again in February 2016, killing three.

Democrat Election Lawyer, Russia Hoaxer Marc Elias Leaves Perkins Coie Ahead of Durham Report

Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias, a key figure in the “Russia collusion” hoax, has parted ways with the Perkins Coie law firm, ahead of the anticipated release of Special Counsel John Durham’s report into the origins of the Russia inquiry.

Elias led Democrats’ efforts to change the voting rules in the 2020 presidential election, and also spearheaded efforts to overturn election results in close congressional races — including a New York race where he questioned voting machines.

In 2016, Elias was the attorney at Perkins Coie who arranged for the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to hire the Fusion GPS opposition research firm — a fact hidden in federal election filings.

The Washington Post exposed Elias’s involvement, despite his past denials, in an October 2017 investigative report:

The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about President Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.

Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.

After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Steele’s dossier ended up in the hands of the FBI, and was used to obtain a warrant from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court to spy on Trump aide Carter Page — though the agency concealed the political origins of the dossier, and misled the FISA court in warrant renewal applications after the FBI knew the dossier had been discredited.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Durham was presenting evidence to a grand jury for possible criminal prosecution. He is “preparing a lengthy report expected to be completed in the coming months,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

In an announcement Sunday, Elias did not mention the Durham investigation, but said that he was leaving Perkins Coie with “eleven partners and three counsel” to form his own new election law firm, Elias Law Group LLP.

Perkins Coie — noted for its long history of representing Democrats — will continue its “corporate political activities” practice, Elias’s release said.

Constitutional law scholar Jonathan Turley, who has followed Elias closely, called his departure significant Sunday, as it came “before the release of the John Durham report.” It is not yet clear whether that report will be made public.
