I went to live in Utah for a year and a half.. coming from Midwest and muh stick in my hand (Skate stick) and there I had to get used to the elevation, got winded super easy at first because of difference in elevation. In that 1.5yr time Just BLEW up. Was hanging out with some dudes who were Cali amazing. Getting used to skating down the streets (benches of mountains) or like in SLC (salt lake city) or Ogden.. it was like SanFran because of the steep roads of the mountains the cities were built on.
Anyway I remember coming back out to the midwest and everyone who was good when I left was like a amateur compared. I member when the PlanB movies (Second Hand Smoke and.. shit forget the other) came out with Rodney when he went from freestyle into to street skating.
I was at a grade school and no shit just watched the video of him doing darkslides, I popped a half pressureflip caught the board and actually did my first darkslide there at MY old gradeschool concrete bench..
I was a skater, still am. I was not a person who rode a board, my soul was 1 with the board. Probably like Flynn is with his surfboard.
When you board and you REALLY board.. its spiritual man. IT REALLY speaks to you.
Like commitment. I think that was the biggest thing I learned skateboarding. You don't want to, you not into it.. don't fucking do it cause it will be your disaster. You MUST commit when you are at top speed and you set yourself up to either AIR or do a trick down a flight of stairs.
Don't Think: You can't be thinking about some side shit and expect to have your teeth at the bottom. Its one of the most pure forms of being.. you just go and have faith in your ability and DON'T THINK.. just do it. Guess it reminds me of TOPGUN also.. (Maverick explains that if you think you are dead, Charlie takes a dig and says "that's a pretty bold move with an taxpayers plane" (paraphrased) but it is SO TRUE.. got to be "in the zone" and block out the world around you as you are doing it…
Gotta do it for yourself: If you have anything less than pure motivation you will fail. You may land the trick and all but its not about that, its about that feeling you get when EVERYTHING jives and your moves are in such perfect timing that you are in the air, your board is moving/flipping and everything comes together and you don't miss a beat.. there is a "zen" type of thing to it all.. like instead of everything you just did, say another timeline or parallel universe you just took a step.. it was that smooth, the rhythm was just right. This is when its really for YOU that you are doing it.. it settles you. Having a bad day or what not, being out with your board and blocking out the world.. its like you leave to some other place, and when you are done with your session for the night (I skated a lot at night, got arrested for it also) the things that bothered you before were just not there anymore, or strangely were not as important when done. Its almost like the feeling you get when you build something. That physical workout and accomplishment you feel afterward. There is no being in it for someone else skateboarding if you really were/are a true skater.
Muscle Memory: Learned a lot about muscle memory and I think fast anyway so it was natural to in the middle of something do even more complex stuff. Once you got one set of moves down, then you could add to the series of muscle memory moves down.. so say you wanted to do a 360 flip.. well there are moves for that one trick, but after getting that so down, then you could do it and angle yourself or have your front food land to where it would stabilize you for a manual when you land (back 2 weeks doing a wheelie).. doing that in a parking lot onto a raised sidewalk.. take it further, 360 flip, to manual, then being able to flip (kickflip/heel flip) out of that into something.. it all builds off of different sets of muscle memory. And those became a card you could pull out and you just knew those series of moves you needed for that trick.. apply it down stairs or over things off a launch ramp etc..
Physics: IT ALL taught me physics. Here everyone things its a childish sport/game to be played, when you are learning how different reactions to movements or "slaps" of a concaved board rolling down the street can do different fun cool things.
If you have done it, and were decent at it or even good you get it. If you got on and could not stand on one, it won't mean as much, maybe not.
But yeah. You live for the perfect session where the board is like magnetically stuck to your feet and no matter what you do you land your tricks/moves and you walk away at the end of the session never even hitting the ground.
I just found this video, started to watch it and it made me want to write down some things. What he said about learning how to fall is key too. It is so fundamental.
