Subject: COVID and new mandates - Mayor's update

Good morning City Teams,

As I’m sure you are aware we’re in another really worrisome wave of COVID-19 infection. This is discouraging and stressful for all of us as I know we all hoped we’d be out of this by now. Earlier this week I had a very difficult conversation with leadership at our local hospital, who shared how serious things are. Their ICU is beyond capacity, (even overflow ICU beds are full), and our hospital is now faced with having to make the kind of decisions that none of us would want to face, if we seriously needed health care.

I encourage everyone eligible to please get vaccinated. They are free. They have proven effective in protecting against COVID, including against this latest delta variant. And while they not foolproof, vaccines can help reduce the severity for those who have a breakthrough case. Additionally, the Pfizer vaccine is now FDA-approved. I believe in our health professionals who advise that this is an important tool in our fight against COVID-19.

And I say this because I want all of YOU to be safe and healthy. I want you and your family to be healthy and I want to protect our city teams. Getting vaccinated is something you can do for yourself, your coworkers, and the community we serve.

Yesterday President Biden announced new COVID-19 mandates that would apply to employers of 100+ workers. I’m sure this is stressful news for some; and welcome news to others. Regardless please know it’s too soon to know how exactly this affects the City as a workplace. I in discussions with our HR and Legal teams to analyze and understand the implications and determine our path forward. And of course we will be reaching out to our union leadership to ensure that the City’s course forward takes into account their concerns as well. We expect the federal Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to develop a rule in the near future that will better articulate what is required by this new mandate.

HR and I will keep you informed as we know more.

As always please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. And as always, thank you for the incredible work you do for our city each and every day.

Be safe and be well,

Cassie
