One of the most popular VR apps available on Steam and the Oculus Quest Store is VRChat. With this “game” users can create and share their own virtual worlds, try on any image and show off their creativity with custom avatars. And in VRChat, a hotbed of pedophilia was discovered.
Journalist Jess Sherwood BBC conducted an investigation and spoke about her experience, which may shock parents whose children are addicted to VRChat.
According to Jess, she introduced herself as a 13-year-old girl. During one of the sessions, she got into a virtual strip club, where she saw grown men running after a child and telling him to take off his clothes. In many virtual rooms visited by the journalist, she saw images of condoms and models of sex toys. In some cases, she saw situations where adult men and teenagers feign group sex. She also saw several cases of so-called “grooming” – when an adult develops a trusting relationship with a child for a long time for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
It was extremely uncomfortable, with only three options: stay and watch, go to another room (where there might be something like that) or join. On many occasions I was told to join.
