The church regards the earth, the "world," as ungodly, as something in which divine intervention would be inappropriate. There is only one "Holy Land": Palestine. For our ancestors, the earth — the native soil, the homeland, the heritage — was “holy,” an odal, a sun-drenched land bound to the gods. The earth is the small world of humans within the great world of the All, surrounded by blessings and salvation, gratefully received.

The converted regarded the woman as equally unholy. Paul, the Jew, sees marriage as nothing more than an institution to escape fornication, as a legitimate continuation of brothel visits. The woman, as Eve’s daughter, is seen as a vessel of sin, unclean, a source of temptation, essentially animalistic and demonic.

The man of the Germanic North, however, revered and honored the woman as the bearer of the bloodline, as the guardian of tradition and good customs, as a practitioner of the arts and healing, as the caretaker of the home and steward of the household.

The interaction between the sexes was considered especially honorable and pure in ancient Germania, as even foreign chroniclers had to admit.
