US regulator opens Waymo investigation

Reported incidents included collisions with stationary and semi-stationary objects — including gates and chains — and parked vehicles. Other incidents included a collision “shortly after” the autonomous driving system “exhibited unexpected behavior near traffic safety control devices.

Other incidents, including vehicles driving in opposing lanes with oncoming traffic or entering construction zones, were identified by publicly available reports, according to the regulator.

The investigation will evaluate the automated driving systems’ performance in detecting and responding to traffic control devices and in avoiding collisions.

A Waymo spokesperson defended the company’s safety and performance in a statement about the investigation.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday that American military aid on its way to Ukrainewould make a “real difference” on the battlefield, as the top diplomat made an unannounced visit to Kyiv to reassure an ally facing a fierce new Russian offensive.(Blinken is a LIAR)

In increasingly intense attacks along the northeastern border in recent days, Moscow’s troops have captured around 100 to 125 square kilometers (40 to 50 square miles) in the Kharkiv region that includes at least seven villages, according to open-source monitoring analysts. Though most of those villages were already depopulated, thousands of civilians in the area have fled the fighting.

The Kremlin’s forces have also been making a concerted push in the east, seeking to drive deeper into the partly occupied Donetsk region. The main focus of Russian attacks Tuesday was Pokrovsk, just inside the Ukrainian border in Donetsk, where the Kremlin’s forces launched 24 assaults, the Ukrainian general staff said in a report.

Analysts have called this moment one of the most dangerous for Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasionin February 2022 — and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked Tuesday for more air defense systems to protect civilians under Russian fire in the northeast.

“We know this is a challenging time,” Blinken said in the Ukrainian capital where he met with Zelenskyy. But he added that American military aid is “going to make a real difference against the ongoing Russian aggression on the battlefield.”

The visit comes less than a month after Congress approved a long-delayed foreign assistance package that sets aside $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, much of which will go toward replenishing badly depleted artillery and air defense systems.

Some of that “is now on the way,” Blinken said, and some has already arrived in Ukraine.

Moscow’s renewed offensive in the northeastern region of Kharkiv is the most significant border incursion since the early days of the war — and comes after months when the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line barely budged.

More than 7,500 civilians have been evacuated from the area, according to authorities. At the same time, the Kremlin’s forces are expanding their push to the northern border regions of Sumy and Chernihiv, Ukrainian officials say, and Kyiv's outgunned and outnumbered soldiers are struggling to hold them back.

Troops fought street to street on the outskirts of Vovchansk, among the largest towns in the Kharkiv area, regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said on national television. Two civilians were killed in Russian shelling Tuesday, he said.

The U.N. human rights office said the battles are taking a heavy toll.

“We are deeply concerned at the plight of civilians in Ukraine,” Liz Throssell, spokeswoman for the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in Geneva. “In the Kharkiv region, the situation is dire.” (Kiev is bombing Russian civilians, isn’t the UN concerned about them? NASA is hosting a media call at 3 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, May 15, to discuss the agency’s PREFIRE (Polar Radiant Energy in the Far-InfraRed Experiment) mission, which aims to improve life on Earth by studying heat loss from Earth’s polar regions and provide information on our changing climate.

The first of two shoebox-sized satellites is targeted to launch aboard a Rocket Lab Electron rocket no earlier than Wednesday, May 22. The launch date for the second satellite will be announced shortly after the launch of the first satellite.

Earth absorbs a lot of energy from the Sun at the tropics. Weather and ocean currents move that heat energy toward the poles, where the heat radiates upward into space. Much of that heat is in far-infrared wavelengths and has never been systematically measured. The data from PREFIRE will address this knowledge gap for the benefit of all by improving predictions of climate change and sea level rise.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday said the latest report on U.S. producer prices was more "mixed" than "hot" given that prior data was revised lower even as the figures for April came in higher than expected.

"I wouldn't call it hot, I'd call it mixed," Powell said at an event in Amsterdam after the Labor Department released the Producer Price Index for April.

Asked if the recent run of higher-than-expected inflation might mean that the Fed's policy rate is not sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to the Fed's 2% target, Powell said "time will tell." But he added that he did not expect the central bank's next move on interest rates would be an increase. More likely it means that rates would remain where they are, in a range of 5.25% to 5.50%, for longer than previously expected, he said.

Moscow has threatened retaliation for any attacks with British weapons

Moscow will retaliate against British targets in Ukraine or elsewhere if Kiev uses UK-provided missiles to strike Russian territory, the Foreign Ministry told London’s ambassador on Monday.

Ambassador Nigel Casey was summoned to the ministry following remarks by British Foreign Secretary David Cameron to Reuters that Ukraine has the right to use long-range missiles sent by the UK to strike deep inside Russia.

”Casey was warned that the response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons on Russian territory could be any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and beyond,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the meeting.

The US and its allies had previously qualified their deliveries of long-range weapons to Kiev by saying they could only be used on territories that Ukraine claims as its own – Crimea, the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Cameron’s statements to the contrary “de facto recognized his country as a party to the conflict.”

Russia understands Cameron’s comments as “evidence of a serious escalation and confirmation of London’s increasing involvement in military operations on the side of Kiev,” the ministry added.

Casey was urged to “think about the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile steps from London and to immediately refute in the most decisive and unequivocal manner the bellicose provocative statements of the head of the Foreign Office.”

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry announced an exercise to test the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons. President Vladimir Putin ordered the drills after “provocative statements and threats” by Western officials, the military said.

Moscow hopes the drills will “cool down the ‘hot heads’ in Western capitals and help them understand the possible catastrophic consequences of the strategic risks they generate,” as well as “keep them from both assisting the Kiev regime in its terrorist actions and being drawn into a direct armed confrontation with Russia,” the Foreign Ministry said in a follow-up statement.

French Ambassador Pierre Levy was also summoned to the Foreign Ministry. Moscow has not yet disclosed the details of the meeting.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) - The U.S. Space Force published its Data and Artificial Intelligence FY 2024 Strategic Action Plan providing specific direction for the enterprise to reach data centricity capable of conducting operations in contested environments.

“To remain competitive in the era of Great Power Competition, the United States Space Force requires a unified approach across data, analytics, and AI activities; an educated, empowered workforce skilled at incorporating commercial teams and tools; continued advanced research and rapid experimentation; and effective integration with our allies and partners,” said Col. Nathan L. Iven, acting chief technology and innovation officer for the Space Force. “To deliver on this vision, the USSF Data and AI FY 2024 Strategic Action Plan identifies initial actions for organizations that are essential for establishing processes, building capacity, and aligning existing efforts to better leverage data as a strategic asset.”

According to the plan, the Space Force must adopt modern, adaptive, and agile data and analytic capabilities to enable secure discovery, access, integration, and use of intelligence data at the speed of mission requirements. To do so, the service will focus on the following four lines of efforts to make data visible, accessible, understandable, linked, trustworthy, interoperable and secure:

The French new space in-orbit services company Infinite Orbits raised a €12 million round led by Newfund Capital along with the EIC Fund, IRDI Capital Investissement and Space Founders France. The main objective of this fundraising is enabling Infinite Orbits to accelerate the development of its main project “Endurance”, a Life Extension satellite for space assets.

Endurance will empower satellite operators to optimize their fleet management strategies while increasing their return on investment through adding years to the life of their satellites. Endurance is planned to demonstrate the first European Life Extension mission in 2026.

“Last year, we already achieved a major step: we are the first startup in the world to have a commercial nanosatellite in geostationary orbit, we formed a key alliance with satellite operator Intelsat to develop services for its fleet. With four major clients, including Azercosmos, Intelsat, CNES and Hispasat, the Company has closed its second year of revenues and is on a strong growth path to cross the €60 million figure in 2027,” explained Adel Haddoud, CEO of Infinite Orbits. “And as a commercially driven company, the next logical step for us is to offer all GEO operators new reliable and competitive services such as Life Extension.”

The US Department of Energy (DOE) just delivered a one-two punch to the world of supercomputing with their Aurora system officially cracking the exascale barrier.

This epic achievement puts the US firmly in the lead, boasting the top two most powerful supercomputers on the planet, according to the latest Top500 list unveiled at the 2024 ISC High-Performance conference.

“The Department of Energy is thrilled by the Aurora team’s achievement,” said Geraldine Richmond, DOE’s Under Secretary for Science and Innovation.

“Aurora is expanding US leadership in advanced scientific computing and will provide researchers with a unique instrument to meld simulation, artificial intelligence (AI), and data analysis.”

“Frontier and Aurora will be pivotal tools in advancing trustworthy AI as we focus on harnessing AI’s potential while understanding and managing its risks,” she added.

What exactly is exascale?

Exascale computing achieves a minimum of one exaflop of calculations per second, enabling complex tasks like modeling, simulation, AI, and analytics. An exaflop denotes one quadrillion high-precision calculations per second, showcasing the immense computational power of these cutting-edge machines.

The Aurora supercomputer reached a performance milestone of 1.012 exaflops, making it one of only two officially recognized exascale systems globally.

Collaborative effort

This achievement wasn’t a solo act. The Aurora supercomputer, built at Argonne National Laboratory, is a collaborative effort between the DOE, Intel, and HPE. It’s a behemoth, housing a mind-boggling 10,624 computing nodes, each wielding the power of 63,744 Intel GPUs – the same tech driving the AI revolution. These processing monsters are all connected via HPE’s high-speed Slingshot interconnect, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

The current benchmark only tapped into 87% of what Aurora can do. Therefore, we have held onto our hats because even more incredible scientific discoveries are coming as the system reaches its maximum potential.

Top500 champion: Frontier

Frontier, which has been steadily flexing its muscles since its 2022 debut as the Top500 champion. Both teams at Argonne and Oak Ridge collaborate closely, and Frontier has already made significant scientific waves.

It snagged two prestigious Association for Computing Machinery Gordon Bell prizes – one for a groundbreaking approach to material discovery using the largest-ever simulation of an alloy, and another for a major leap in cloud modeling related to DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM).

The power of Aurora isn’t lost on the research community. The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, home to both Aurora and other cutting-edge systems, has facilitated the Aurora Early Science Program and DOE’s Exascale Computing Project.

Geomagnetic storm shows need for space weather forecasts

From 10-13 May, aurorae (typically seen at the polar areas) could be seen at unusually low latitudes.

Spectacular sightings of aurorae borealis (the northern hemisphere) were observed from e.g. Florida, Italy and Spain and aurorae australis (the southern hemisphere) were reported as far north as Queensland in Australia.

This was the result of an extreme (the highest category) geomagnetic storm from a series of coronal mass ejections (CME’s) – clouds of plasma material that are expelled from the Sun with high velocity into the interplanetary space.

These plasma clouds carry magnetic field which interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field when it finds our planet on its path through interplanetary space.

While aurorae are a delightful spectacle, geomagnetic storms also have potentially disrupting impacts such as the stress they can impose on the power grid due to induced currents in power lines, and possible impacts on communication and satellite operations.

The latest geomagnetic storm followed earlier elevated solar activity. So called active regions, concentrations of magnetic flux on the solar surface, have over the past week released several top-category X class flares, bursts of electromagnetic wave emission.

These flares impact the Earths ionosphere causing (high frequency) radio blackouts on the sunlit side of the Earth, and they can also result in perturbations or interruptions of satellite navigation services.

“Such solar events happen regularly, with their occurrence rate following an eleven year cycle associated with the inversion of the overall Solar magnetic field each eleven years,” says Jesse Andries, scientific officer with WMO’s Space Programme.

“We are currently nearing the maximum of the present cycle with Solar events occurring most frequently. While Solar events appear regularly, this recent geomagnetic storm is certainly one of the largest in several decades,” he says.

Fortunately, space weather monitoring and prediction is more and more becoming an operational practice just as terrestrial weather is. The latest event was accurately forecast.

Space weather forecasters around the world monitor the sun closely. They report each day on the evolution of active regions on the solar surface and they estimate the probability for large flares to occur.

They furthermore record the properties of the onset of coronal mass ejections which they feed to models which then allow them to estimate the expected time of arrival at Earth.

Based on these analyses, critical sectors and the general public are notified in advance of upcoming events, so they can take protective measures, such as deviating flight routes away from the poles.

WMO has been making efforts to integrate Space Weather within its activities for over a decade and has embraced it as a related environmental service in its Strategic Plan.

The WMO Executive Council meeting in June is due to adopt a new Four-year Plan for WMO Activities related to Space Weather (2024-2027). This was recently approved by the WMO Commission for Observation, Infrastructure and Information systems (INFCOM).

The plan addresses the three main pillars of the WMO Infrastructure: observing infrastructure, modelling and prediction, and data exchange.

Furthermore, it seeks to advance the capabilities of WMO Members to provide valuable services to various economic sectors that are prone to threats from Solar eruptions and consequent Space Weather phenomena.

A bloke spotted hundreds of tiny "dancing orbs" when looking out at the Northern Lights and believes he may have seen a fleet of UFOs.

Posting a video of the skies in south Norway, the man was left flummoxed by the appearance of hundreds of shapeshifting lights and believes the lights could either be from a far off festival or beings from outer space.

His post to Reddit garnered hundreds of upvotes and commenters concerned we were being invaded by beings from beyond the stars.

Regardless of what the lights represented, viewers were left stunned by one of "the coolest videos" they had ever seen. One user wrote the video was "super neat" and another said it was "beautiful".

Others questioned whether user CrayRazy had captured evidence of life from other planets. He wrote: "Saw this tonight in the south of Norway.

At first I thought it was light beams from a festival but I live in a tiny city and that cloud is either over mountains, a lake or just a residential area.

"Really confused to what this could be. Any ideas?"

Other users were left wondering if the lights in the sky were the recent sightings of aurora borealis, but one pointed out: "Aurora borealis is way higher up."

Another wrote: "UFOs are popping up for this storm. I saw one here". A third added: "I don't know, looks like a lot of shiny orbs. There seems to be a lot of UFO activity around this solar event!"

Other Reddit users were left less convinced by the appearance of aliens and wondered whether it was in fact a solar storm taking place in the area.

One said: "We are having a solar storm. The whole northern hemisphere is capable of seeing the aurora borealis."

The original poster replied: "That's why I went outside but that doesn't look like the northern lights at all."

While a definitive answer was unavailable on what had caused the hundreds of tiny orbs to appear, some were adamant it was not UFOs and just a collection of northern lights sightings. But that's what they want you to think.

One user wrote: "It’s definitely the northern lights. I live in the Northwest Territories in Canada and you see that exact same thing from time to time.

Nothing to get worked up about. Enjoy the show!"

Another claimed: "It’s definitely the aurora borealis, but people here don’t want to believe it. It’s much more fun to think it’s something unexplained."

A panel of three judges is considering whether the sorority that inducted a transgender member into its Wyoming-based chapter 2022 could have acted in bad faith, and whether the six women who sued over the move appealed their case too early.

Women's-rights activist Riley Gaines joined six Wyoming women Tuesday for oral argument in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals – which encompasses Wyoming – in the case of Westenbroek v. Kappa Kappa Gamma.

The case started in March of 2023, when seven (later six) women sued the sorority, its director, and the transgender member the Laramie, Wyoming, chapter admitted.

The women claimed the sorority’s leadership was harming the organization, its offshoot housing corporation had broken its contract to sorority house residents, and the sorority leaders interfered with that contract. They also invoked a direct cause accusing the defendants of harming them.

U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson dismissed their claims six months later. He said private organizations can make and interpret their own rules – including the definition of the word “woman.” But he gave some guidance on how the women could change their complaint and re-file it.

The women appealed to the 10th Circuit instead, saying Johnson failed to consider whether Kappa leadership acted in bad faith and betrayed the duty they have to the sorority’s members.

But Can We Hear It?

Because Johnson left the women a possible avenue to plead their case in his court again, appeals-court judges voiced doubts Tuesday, that they should be hearing this case at all. “If we were to look at… whether or not the district court thought it was a final decision – it seems to me it’s not final,” said 10th Circuit Judge Carolyn McHugh, a Barack Obama nominee who took her seat in 2014.

McHugh was referencing appeals’ court rules banning higher courts from taking on cases that are still pending in lower courts. “(It’s) considered final when it goes to the merits of the complaint,” said May Mailman, appellate attorney for the six women, indicating Johnson’s order disputed their claims, not just the nature of their application – harming their hopes of re-filing.

Mailman later conceded that the women “could ask” about re-filing. Natalie McLaughlin, Kappa’s attorney, appeared almost as unwilling as Mailman to say the case could be pending still in the lower court.

She kept saying it was a valid question for the judges to consider – until Senior Judge Michael Roland Murphy – a Bill Clinton nominee to the bench – finally asked her point blank: “Is it your position we do not have jurisdiction?”

“We believe they do not have jurisdiction,”McLaughlin answered.

‘Bad Faith’

“Plaintiffs allege directors of Kappa Kappa Gamma unilaterally changed the nature of the organization by adding a category of members… in bad faith,” said Mailman. In court documents prior, Mailman compared the move to a painter who agrees to paint a home white and instead paints it black.

Mailman pointed to the women’s allegations that the Wyoming Kappa chapter spontaneously changed its new-member voting systems from the accepted anonymous voting application to one that revealed the voters’ identities; and that people in the organization demonstrated bullying, maligning pressure on anyone who would vote against the transgender member.

McHugh indicated that the women didn’t raise their complaints of bad faith directly with the sorority leaders before suing, and not doing so may have obliterated their claim that they’re suing Kappa on its own behalf, to spare it from the actions of bad leaders.

Dictionaries And ‘Women’

McLaughlin and Mailman focused on different aspects of the case during their arguments.

McLaughlin insisted the case is about whether Kappa has a right as a private organization to interpret its own bylaws. She countered Mailman’s bad faith arguments by noting that Ohio law (Kappa is registered in Ohio) carries a presumption that private clubs’ leaders have acted in good faith and are often free from courts’ meddling.

She also insisted that because Kappa’s bylaws don’t actually define the word “woman,” the sorority’s council can draw from the current culture’s myriad definitions of it, when interpreting their induction criteria that members must be women.

McHugh asked a hypothetical: What if the sorority council had decided that cisgender (non-transgender) men were included in the definition of “woman”? Would the council’s actions still be defensible?

McLaughlin said that hypothetical is not before the court, but if it were, the court would have to weigh whether such a call had been both unreasonable and arbitrary.

“But what we’ve done before this court is put forth many sources (saying transgender women are women),” McLaughlin said.

OK, But…

But the women’s argument isn’t that Kappa merely interpreted the word “woman,” but added to it – in a sweeping rule change affecting the group’s purpose of 150 years, said Judge Richard Federico, a President Biden nominee who took his seat last year.

“Even the bylaws say ‘woman,’ period,” said Federico. “(The allegation is) you’re adding language. You’re creating a new category altogether.”

McLaughlin said Kappa’s bylaws give the governing council not only the right, but the duty to interpret club rules.

“An artful announcement of interpretation by a board does not warrant (court) interference,” she said.

Federico hinted that there may be a difference between sorority leaders interpreting rules about members’ grade-point averages and good character – and reinterpreting the word “woman.”

McLaughlin essentially retorted that, really, there isn’t.

“That this interpretation is something they take issue with, they disagree with, does not divest council of their right under Ohio rules to interpret (what a woman is),” she said.The argument ended with McHugh saying the judges would take the issues under advisement.

Earlier this year, Thai Union, the largest investor in the largest seafood restaurant chain in the country, announced it was seeking to sell its stake.

At least 99 locations of Red Lobster are being auctioned off amid questions about the stalwart seafood chain's long-term future.

In a post Monday on LinkedIn, Neal Sherman, founder and CEO of TAGeX Brands, a liquidation firm, announced he was leading the closure of more than 50 Red Lobster locations, with the restaurants' equipment to be auctioned off.

A web page dedicated to the liquidations showed closure locations across the U.S. including in Denver; Indianapolis; Rochester, New York; Sacramento, California; San Antonio; and San Diego.

On Tuesday, Restaurant Business Magazine reported 99 locations were closing.

The closures represent about 15% of the company's approximately 700 locations, though it remains the largest seafood restaurant chain in the U.S.

Red Lobster has struggled with a significant debt load, unfavorable lease terms, executive turnover and ill-advised strategies including an all-you-can-eat-shrimp promotion last fall that resulted in a significant loss for the company.

Last month, CNBC reported Red Lobster was seeking a buyer as it looked to avoid a bankruptcy filing, but none have materialized.

Earlier this year, Thai Union, the largest investor in Red Lobster, announced it was seeking to exit its position.

“The combination of Covid-19 pandemic, sustained industry headwinds, higher interest rates and rising material and labor costs have impacted Red Lobster, resulting in prolonged negative financial contributions to Thai Union and its shareholders,” Thiraphong Chansiri, Thai Union Group’s CEO, said in a statement.

“After detailed analysis, we have determined that Red Lobster’s ongoing financial requirements no longer align with our capital allocation priorities and therefore are pursuing an exit of our minority investment.”

At least 8 people killed in Florida bus crash; dozens injured

At least eight people were killed in a bus crash on a Florida highway Tuesday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said. According to the highway patrol, the bus collided with a pickup truck on state road 40 in Marion County, which is located south of Gainesville and northwest of Orlando.

Approximately 40 people, including the truck driver, were taken to area hospitals after the crash, Highway Patrol Lt. Pat Riordan said during a news conference. Some of the injured were in very serious condition, Riordan said.

The crash involved a bus transporting about 53 farm workers and a 2001 Ford Ranger truck, the highway patrol said in a statement to CBS News.

The retired school bus was traveling west on the highway and the pickup truck was going east when the truck moved toward the center line at around 6:35 a.m., Riordan said.

The bus and truck collided in "a sideswipe-type manner," Riordan said. The collision sent the bus off the road and it went through a fence and hit a tree before it overturned.

It wasn't immediately known why the truck moved toward the center line, Riordan said.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said on social media the part of the highway where the crash occurred would be shut down for most of the day.

The highway patrol is investigating the crash. Riordan said investigators will need at least six months to conduct the investigation.

Supreme Court Justices Thomas And Alito Issue Warnings About State Of America

In separate remarks at two different events on Friday, Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito issued warnings about the state of affairs in America today, including support for freedom of speech “declining dangerously” and the nation’s capital becoming a “hideous” place where cancel culture runs rampant.

Justice Thomas spoke at a conference of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Point Clear, Alabama, while Justice Alito delivered a commencement address at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, a Catholic college in Ohio, with both of the conservative-minded judges painting a dark picture—while encouraging action and offering hope.

At the Alabama event, Justice Thomas was asked to comment by the moderator—U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle—about what it’s like to work “in a world that seems meanspirited.”

“I think there’s challenges to that,” Justice Thomas said. “We’re in a world and we—certainly my wife and I the last two or three years it’s been—just the nastiness and the lies, it’s just incredible.”

Justice Thomas has faced heavy fire from Democrats who accuse him of skirting disclosure rules, of corruption in general, and of being too cozy with wealthy Republicans. They have not been able to point to any specific court cases in which the justice has misbehaved. Some activists have even pushed for Justice Thomas’s impeachment.

By contrast, over 100 former Supreme Court clerks signed an open letter last year defending Justice Thomas’s integrity, calling him a man of “unwavering principle” whose independence is “unshakable.” They called various critical stories that have targeted him as “malicious” and “perpetuating the ugly assumption that the Justice cannot think for himself.”

“They are part of a larger attack on the Court and its legitimacy as an institution,” the letter also stated. “The picture they paint of the Court and the man for whom we worked bears no resemblance to reality.”

Public opinion polls suggest public trust in the Supreme Court recently fell to new lows.

Addressing the criticism, Justice Thomas said at the Alabama conference that Washington had become a “hideous” place where “people pride themselves in being awful,” while characterizing America beyond the Beltway as a place where regular people “don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things.”

Justice Thomas also expressed concern that court writings have become inaccessible to the average person, engendering a sense of alienation.

“The regular people I think are being disenfranchised sometimes by the way that we talk about cases,” Justice Thomas said, while expressing hope that this could change.

‘It’s Rough Out There’

Justice Alito warned graduates at the Catholic college in Ohio that freedom of speech and religion were both being assailed in today’s America, while expressing hope that young people would take up the mantle and fight for positive change.

In his address, Justice Alito made a reference to pop culture, namely to a graduation speech delivered by the character Thornton Melon (played by Rodney Dangerfield) in the movie “Back to School.”

He jokingly cited Mr. Melon’s advice to graduates, which was not to go out into the world after graduating because “it’s rough out there” and instead move back in with their parents, let them pay all the bills, and “worry about it.”

“As Mr. Melon said, it is rough out there,” Justice Alito said. “It’s probably rougher out there now than it has been for quite some time. But that is precisely why your contributions will be so important.”

Justice Alito said that, outside the walls of the campus, “troubled waters are slamming against some of our most fundamental principles,” referring to freedom of speech.

“Support for freedom of speech is declining dangerously,” he continued, noting that this problem is especially acute on college campuses, which he said are places where the exchange of ideas should be most protected.

“Very few colleges live up to that ideal. This place is one of them … but things are not that way out there in the broader world,” Justice Alito said.

Israeli Tanks Plunge Deeper Into Rafah As 500,000 Palestinians Flee

Israeli tanks have been seen plunging deeper into the southern Gaza city of Rafah amid reports that some 500,000 people have fled amid the escalating ground offensive.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have initially focused their operation on the eastern section of the city, having seized a key roadway that essentially cuts Rafah in half. "The tanks advanced this morning west of Salahuddin Road into the Brzail and Jneina neighborhoods. They are in the streets inside the built-up area and there are clashes," one resident told Reuters via a messaging app. Regional media also reports that "Video on social media showed one tank on George Street in Al-Jneina neighborhood."

The White House criticism that not enough has been done to evacuate civilians to safety has persisted. "One of the officials also warned that Israel has not come anywhere close to making adequate preparations – including building infrastructure related to food, hygiene and shelter – ahead of potentially evacuating more than one million Gazans are who currently reside in Rafah," the report continues.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan has clarified in a fresh statement that "The president was clear that he would not supply certain offensive weapons for such an operation were to occur." He underscored in a Monday briefing, "It has not yet occurred."

The words came after a dire prediction by Secretary of State Antony Blinken about the near-future fight if Israel goes 'all in' on Rafah. "Israel’s on the trajectory, potentially, to inherit an insurgency with many armed Hamas left, or, if it leaves, a vacuum filled by chaos, filled by anarchy and probably refilled by Hamas," he said Sunday on NBC’s "Meet the Press." Already the IDF has been forced to return to wage battle in some parts of northern Gaza after Hamas reappeared there, though these regions had already been pacified earlier in the conflict.

But on the whole the US now assesses Hamas capabilities have been "significantly degraded". State Department spokesperson Matt Miller said days ago, "You have seen their ability to launch the kind of attacks that they did on October 7 significantly degraded, if not completely eliminated."

"They couldn’t launch an attack of that scale today," Miller claimed. "Their weapons production factories underground have been eliminated. Most of their battalion leadership in the north and in central Gaza has been eliminated. So Israel has achieved a great number of its military objectives."

Office-loan delinquencies jump to nearly 6-year high, says Moody’s

The bill on past-due commercial property loans surpassed $19.1 billion in April.

Delinquencies on office loans rose to 6.4% in April — the highest level since June 2018 — as the payoff rate among borrowers with maturing debt from Wall Street plunged, according to a new Moody’s Ratings report.

A main driver of the monthly uptick was that only 24% of borrowers with maturing office loans in April repaid their mortgages, down from a roughly 45% to 50% rate last year, Moody’s said.

Instead of payoffs, property owners have increasingly looked for loan modifications, extensions and other forms of debt relief from lenders as the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates higher for longer than many expected. Titans of the commercial real-estate industry, including Starwood Property Trust’s Barry Sternlicht, have responded with ramped-up calls for the Fed to cut rates, especially with half of the estimated $4.7 trillion of outstanding commercial mortgage debt on buildings in the U.S. coming due through 2027. The office refinance rate has been low ever since interest rates increased in mid-2022 and 2023, as office lending standards have tightened and borrowers have been less willing and able to refinance office loans,” the Moody’s team wrote.

The Moody’s delinquency data was based on property loans on hotels, office buildings, shopping centers and other building types in multiborrower, or “conduit,” commercial mortgage-backed securities deals, not loans held by banks or other lenders.

The Moody’s team pegged the sector’s overall conduit-loan delinquency rate in April at 5.37%, which translates to a $19.13 billion loan balance, up from $18.22 billion a month earlier.

Russian MPs pass bill banning ‘foreign agents’ from elections

Those considered to be under influence from abroad will also be prohibited from serving as observers

Russian lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bill that bans individuals labeled as ‘foreign agents’ from seeking any political office in the country, according to a press release issued by the Federation Council, the upper chamber of Russia’s parliament.

According to the bill, those deemed foreign agents will no longer be able to stand as candidates in elections at either the municipal or federal level. Such persons will also be prohibited from taking part in elections as proxies of other candidates or observers, which effectively means that anyone working for NGOs or media companies that receive funds from abroad may be excluded from the election process.

The legislation was earlier passed by the State Duma, the lower chamber. It must now be signed by President Vladimir Putin to become law.

The changes essentially constitute a package of amendments to an existing law governing the activities of foreign agents in Russia first adopted in 2012. Under the law, those designated as foreign agents are not banned from operating in the country but are required to disclose their status and are subject to additional restrictions.

The latest amendments oblige anyone who decides to take part in elections to “cease their status as a foreign agent.” If it turns out that an already registered candidate has the status of foreign agent, a court can cancel such a candidate’s election registration. The bill also states that a citizen can be deprived of his or her currently held political position if designated a foreign agent. However, office holders are granted a 180-day period to relinquish this status before being removed.

Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin earlier called the new legislation “humane, democratic and liberal.” He emphasized that those labeled as foreign agents have the option of having the label removed by cutting ties with foreign funding and then reintegrating into the electoral process.

According to Volodin, there are currently ten foreign agents in the legislative bodies of Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian regions.

In 2022, Russia already amended the legislation to prohibit foreign agents from holding state office, taking part in electoral campaigns, engaging in educational activities, or receiving state funds. In March of this year, advertising on platforms belonging to foreign agents was banned. Those who fail to comply with the foreign agent legislation can face fines of up to 5 million rubles ($55,000) and up to six years in prison.

Pfizer Earning Billions Treating Covid Vax-Induced Turbo Cancers

Pfizer is boasting that the pharmaceutical giant is now raking in billions of dollars in profits from treating the turbo cancer epidemic that was triggered by the company’s Covid mRNA vaccines.

According to company CEO Albert Bourla, Pfizer is cashing in from new “blockbuster” cancer drugs.

Bourla, a World Economic Forum (WEF) “agenda contributor,” is gloating that treating turbo cancers is “our new Covid.”

Speaking with Fox Business about how Pfizer plans to score big on the new turbo cancer market, Bourla announced that the deadly epidemic is translating into big profits for Pfizer investors.

Since profits from the company’s mRNA (modRNA) COVID jabs are drying up, Bourla is ready to unleash new chemical drugs to reinvigorate the profit streams.

The “pandemic” brought record revenue to Pfizer, which generated an astounding $157 billion overall from not just its “vaccine” but also Paxlovid, an oral antiviral medication.

In 2023, however, sales were down by more than half at only around $71 billion.

Since the end of 2022, Pfizer’s share price has likewise fallen by 42 percent due to a rapid decline in demand for all things COVID-related.

Pfizer responded with a major cost-cutting campaign that included laying off hundreds of people at its United Kingdom and United States facilities.

Of course, Bourla and the other executives at Pfizer were never planning to take a pay cut.

Conveniently, the company is now cashing in on the turbo cancer epidemic caused by the Covid mRNA injections.

As deadly cancers continue to spread rapidly among the general public, Big Pharma elites are enjoying the spoils.

“Oncology: it is our new COVID,” Bourla said excitedly, grinning from ear to ear while giving all the credit to himself and his friends.

Republican Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost charged two pro-Palestine protesters under an ancient KKK anti-masking law in a bid to eliminate their First Amendment rights but a grand jury rejected the obscure felony charge in court on Monday.

A Xavier University student and a recent graduate arrested in connection with a campus protest were charged with felonies under a law that officials say had never been used in Hamilton County before.

The pair appeared in court Monday on charges they committed a crime while wearing disguises. Witnesses said they were wearing medical face masks. They are also charged with trespassing, a misdemeanor.

By Monday afternoon, the charges against Sophia Dempsey and Julia Lankisch, both 22, had been ignored by a grand jury. In Ohio, grand juries are held in secret, so details about why the charges were so quickly brought before the jurors and why they were ignored is not known.

The pair still face the misdemeanor trespassing charges.

Disguises law dates to 1800s but no record of use in Hamilton County

The protesters were initially charged under an 1800s era law used to target the Ku Klux Klan and other similar violent, vigilante groups. Attorney General Dave Yost pointed out the law in a letter to Ohio university presidents in response to the recent pro-Palestinian protests. It carries a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison.

Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Matthew Broo said staff at his office could find no records or recall anyone else ever being charged under this law in this county.

A lawsuit that claims the State Department unlawfully used "censorship enterprises that target the American press" — favoring left-leaning media outlets over conservative news sites — is moving ahead after a federal judge rejected the Biden administration’s attempt to dismiss the case.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, The Daily Wire, and The Federalist filed a joint lawsuit against the Biden administration’s State Department in December over its alleged funding of technologies that essentially work to blacklist conservative media outlets.

The complaint argued that the State Department uses its Global Engagement Center to finance the development and promotion of left-wing media monitoring organizations, including NewsGuard and the UK-based Global Disinformation Index, in "one of the most egregious government operations to censor the American press in the history of the nation."

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Jeremy Kernodle in Tyler, Texas, ruled that the plaintiffs had provided enough information to show they had standing to challenge the State Department's alleged actions.

Kernodle denied the Biden administration's request to dismiss the suit, tossed its request to move the case to a different venue, and ordered expedited discovery.

In his ruling, Kernodle cited allegations that the State Department's actions essentially encouraged social media companies to "deplatform" the Daily Wire and The Federalist in violation of a Texas state law, which prohibits censoring speech based on viewpoint.

NewsGuard, GDI, and other "disinformation" watchdog groups have a long history of systematically targeting conservative media outlets under the guise of combating misinformation.

Margot Cleveland, an attorney at the New Civil Liberties Alliance, which is representing Daily Wire and the Federalist in the case, told Newsmax that while the ruling is “only the first step in halting the State Department's unconstitutional and ultra vires conduct, it represents an important first step in this case.”

"That the Court opened his opinion by quoting the First Amendment is a valuable reminder of the stakes at issue," she said.

Kernodle’s ruling begins by quoting directly from the First Amendment and previous rulings that have bolstered the component’s importance to the Constitution.

"Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press," the order begins.

Cleveland added that while Daily Wire and The Federalist may be the only media plaintiffs involved in this specific case, the State Department's "censorship scheme threatens the freedom of the press of any American outlet that reports disfavored views, including Newsmax."

Paxton’s office called Kernodle's ruling an "important victory" in its lawsuit against the Biden administration's "conspiracy to censor, deplatform, and demonetize media outlets disfavored by the federal government."

"The Biden administration made a reprehensible attempt to censor the American press with funding intended to monitor foreign propaganda, aiming to repress viewpoints the federal government disagreed with," Paxton said in a statement.

"Abusing taxpayer money, Biden repurposed a government agency into a censorship apparatus. It must stop, and I am proud to lead the nation's fight to save the First Amendment."

His office issued a press release about the latest update in the case noted that even though the "Global Engagement Center" was “only authorized to counter foreign propaganda,” the State Department "actively intervened in the news-media market to limit the reach and business viability of domestic news organizations by funding censorship technology and private censorship enterprises."

"The agency unlawfully weaponized the center to violate the First Amendment and suppress Americans’ constitutionally protected speech," Paxton’s office alleged.

The Daily Wire previously reported that the Global Engagement Center was founded in 2011 as the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications, where it was responsible for countering the propaganda of foreign terrorists like al-Qaida.

The initiative was renamed in 2016, however, it kept the same counterterrorism mission.

It’s stated mission is to "direct, lead, synchronize, integrate, and coordinate U.S. Federal Government efforts to recognize, understand, expose, and counter foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts aimed at undermining or influencing the policies, security, or stability of the United States, its allies, and partner nations."

Congress has not authorized any funds to be used for purposes other than countering foreign propaganda and disinformation.

However, the suit contends that taxpayer dollars were used to pay for the services of companies that have a history of targeting conservative media outlets by limiting ad revenue.

To do so, GDI, which claims to be nonpolitical and nonpartisan, offers a "Dynamic Exclusion List" of global media outlets that it contends present a "high risk for disinformation."

While its blacklist is kept under wraps, it does publish its top 10 "riskiest" outlets, which have featured prominent conservative media outlets, including the Daily Wire, the Federalist, New York Post, and others.

The outlets deemed "least risky" are mostly left-leaning sites such as NPR, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.

GDI’s list is disseminated to major advertising companies for use in their decision-making process. Many ad platforms are using these blacklists to effectively de-monetize conservative and right-leaning media.

The complaint argues that GDI was "funded and promoted" by the State Department defendants named in the suit, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and five other officials.

NewsGuard, which also reportedly received State Department funding, has negatively rated leading conservative outlets like the Washington Times, Newsmax, Breitbart, The Federalist, Epoch Times, Red State, PragerU, The Daily Wire, and others.

In a 2020 press release, NewsGuard touted winning a $25,000 Pentagon-State Department contest for “detecting COVID-19 misinformation and disinformation.”

NewsGuard has previously defended contracts it was awarded from the Biden administration.

The Media Research Center in two annual studies found NewsGuard ratings were significantly biased against conservative media outlets in favor of more liberal ones.

The NewsGuard ratings. in turn, are used by major advertising agencies to effectively block conservative media from receiving advertising. Their ratings effectively works to demonetize conservative media.

Increasingly Congress has become concerned that NewsGuard engages in a privatized form of censorship on behalf of the government.

Last December, Congress passed a provision in the National Defense bill prohibiting the Pentagon from awarding military recruitment advertising to any advertising agency that uses “misinformation” services such as NewsGuard and GDI. President Biden signed the defense bill into law.

On the EV issue, this tariff approach is politically duplicitous by Biden against the backdrop of massive investment in Mexico by the three largest Chinese EV automakers. Last December the three Chinese auto manufacturers, MG, BYD, and2 Chery, announced they were going to spend billions building new EV manufacturing plants in Mexico. Each Chinese auto manufacturer was going to spend between $1.5 to $2.0 billion.

Those Mexican built Chinese EV’s would pass into the USA market under current USMCA trade rules and regulations, as long as they technically meet the material origination rules. This can make tariffs against the Chinese imported EVs a moot point, because China will be making them in Mexico (North American trade agreement).

One of the reasons President Trump said the U.S. auto industry would suffer a “bloodbath,” is specifically because the current Chinese auto companies are targeting these EV’s in the $10,000 or less range. The recent decision by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to terminate its collaboration with Russia has sparked significant debate among the scientific community.

According to Russian and European scientists contacted by swissinfo this move inadvertently supports Russian President Vladimir Putin's war efforts in Ukraine and sets a dangerous precedent.

Russian contributions to CERN's scientific research have been substantial. The decision to sever ties with Russia and Belarus was made by CERN's Council in December 2023 in response to the ongoing illegal military invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the decision in March, labeling it as "politicized, discriminatory, and unacceptable."

This unprecedented decision comes after nearly 60 years of scientific collaboration between CERN and Russia.

The collaboration began in the 1960s during the Cold War and continued with Russia becoming an observer state in 1991.

The result of this dedollarization taking place is massive inflation inside the USA that continues as the dollar (yellow zone) is weakened against the increasingly non-dollar-aligned world (grey zone). The frequency of dollar use is lessening as alternatives are being used.

Trade into the yellow zone still requires a benchmark of dollars, but bilateral trade within the grey zone increasingly does not. This is the root of the global financial and economic cleaving. Mexico is not stupid.
