Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to visit Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation next week

The Oct. 18 trip follows his apology to Chief Rosanne Casimir for not having responded to invitations to visit on Sept. 30, the first National Day for Truth an Reconciliation. Trudeau faced backlash for travelling to Tofino on that day to spend some time with his family instead of appearing at any in-person events to honour residential school survivors. He had attended an event on Parliament Hill the night before, and spoke to some residential school survivors by telephone on the actual day, but Trudeau said it was a “mistake” to travel.

The First Nation in Kamloops announced in May that ground-penetrating radar had detected what are believed to be the remains of 215 Indigenous children in unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school. Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan revealed a similar finding of more than 700 unmarked graves a month later, as many across the country expressed grief and anger at the news. Tk’emlups te Secwepemc has said it’s not interested in apologies that don’t lead to real change, and called on the federal government to provide funding to help survivors and their families heal from the trauma caused by the residential school system. “We require funding for a Tk’emlups healing centre to support survivors and intergenerational survivors,” the First Nation said in an earlier statement. Trudeau is expected to deliver remarks at Monday’s event, along with Casimir and Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald.

Jill Biden makes unannounced trip to South Carolina to honor pastor

Jill Biden on Sunday afternoon made a trip to Columbia, South Carolina, which had not been announced publicly ahead of time, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Jackson, the senior pastor of Brookland Baptist Church. The attendance of the first lady was spurred by her relationship with Robin Jackson, the pastor's wife, who in 2019 became Biden's prayer partner. The two met when then-candidate Joe Biden and Jill Biden attended a service at Brookland during the presidential campaign. Robin Jackson and Jill Biden forged a remote prayer connection, which Biden has credited with restoring her faith after the death of her son, Beau Biden. Biden and Jackson remain "frequently in touch," mostly "via text," Biden's press secretary Michael La Rosa tells CNN.

Crowds in Tbilisi demand Saakashvili’s release, bishops too want his liberation

Some 50,000 protesters take to the streets in support of the former president jailed on corruption charges after returning from his Ukrainian exile. Since then, "Misha" has been on a hunger strike. The Georgian Patriarchate calls for Saakashvili’s release, urging the parties to engage in political reconciliation. The former president was jailed by Georgian authorities upon his return to the country ahead of the 2 October local elections. Multiple charges had been pending against the former head of state.

Two days ago, thousands of supporters of the founder of the pro-Western United National Movement took to the streets. His party failed to come on top of the ruling pro-Russian Georgian Dream party. According to media reports, at least 50,000 people gathered to demand Saakashvili’s release.
