UniCredit, Italy Talks Over Monte Paschi Purchase Collapse
Talks between the Italian government and UniCredit SpA over the sale of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA have collapsed, potentially dealing a blow to Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s efforts to end the 500-year-old lender’s long-running troubles. The Treasury and UniCredit ended talks as they weren’t able to find a an accord satisfying both parties, people with knowledge of the matter said. A formal announcement may be made as soon as Sunday, they said, asking to not be named because the matter is not public yet.
Negotiations have been hampered in recent days by differences over how much the Italian Treasury would contribute to a deal and over what Monte Paschi units will be included. A spokesman fort UniCredit declined to comment. A spokesman for Treasury also declined to comment.
UniCredit Chief Executive Officer Andrea Orcel and Draghi’s government had been haggling for months of the terms of a complex deal that involved breaking Monte Paschi up and the state taking a stake in the Milan-based lender. With the two sides unable to come to terms, uncertainty remains for the 21,000 employees of the historic Siena-based bank.

Strong quake rattles northern Taiwan
A strong earthquake struck northern Taiwan on Sunday, causing minor damage and injuries.
The quake with a magnitude of 6.5, which hit at 1:11 p.m., had its focus in Nanao township in the southern part of Yilan County, according to the Central Weather Bureau. Its depth was 66.8 km. Local media reported building damage, including in the capital Taipei, and disruption to transport links across Taiwan. In Hualien County, eastern Taiwan, a woman was injured by falling rocks, while Taipei reported people trapped in an elevator. In New Taipei City, the quake caused a crane to break and bend 90 degrees while suspended above the ground over a high-rise under construction, but nobody was hurt.
The quake was one of several tremors felt on Sunday, with the bureau saying there could be more over the coming days.

Yellen says Americans haven't experienced current inflation rate 'in a long time'
they always say this.....Yellen said she believes inflation will improve during the 'second half' of 2022
Always in the second half of the next year......
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday said the United States hasn't experienced the recent inflation levels in a "long time." "Many firms are experiencing a shortage of labor," Yellen said during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday morning. "The COVID shock to the economy has caused disruptions that we'll be working through over the next year and of course Americans haven't seen inflation like we've experienced in a long time."
Host Jake Tapper noted how inflation is growing at its fastest pace in 30 years and asked whether spending more money on President Biden's "Build Back Better" agenda will be "pouring gas on the inflation fire," prompting Yellen to say the spending on the bipartisan infrastructure package and the massive social spending package would be spread out over the next decade. Tapper later asked Yellen when she expects the inflation rate to return to the 2% level, which the Federal Reserve classifies as "acceptable."
"Well, I expect that to happen next year. Monthly rates of inflation have already fallen substantially from the very high rates that we saw in the spring and early summer," Yellen said. "On a 12-month basis the inflation rate will remain high into next year because of what's already happened, but I expect improvement by the middle to the end of next year – second half of next year."
Yellen was also asked during the interview to respond to what former President Barack Obama's Treasury Secretary Larry Summers had to say about inflation this past week.
"I've been alarmed for a long time, and I'm more alarmed now," Summers said in a clip played by Tapper. He also said, "We’re in more danger than we’ve been during my career of losing control of inflation in the U.S."
Yellen said she believed Summers is "wrong" and she doesn't "think we're about to lose control of inflation."
"I agree, of course, we are going through a period of inflation that's higher than Americans have seen in a long time, and it's something that's obviously a concern and worrying them, but we haven't lost control," Yellen added. Inflation isn't the only crisis that will continue into 2022. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said last weekend that the supply chain crisis will continue until "next year."
"Certainly a lot of the challenges that we’ve been experiencing this year will continue into next year," Buttigieg responded. "Look, part of what is happening isn’t just the supply side, it’s the demand side. Demand is off the charts."

185 Employees Leave Los Alamos Nuclear Weapons Lab Due to Vaccine Mandate
The New Mexico lab that produced the world’s first nuclear bomb lost 185 employees as a vaccine mandate deadline expired on Oct. 22, according to a lawsuit (pdf) filed against the operator of the facility the same day. An additional 153 employees at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) were placed on leave without pay or are using vacation pay because they obtained a religious exemption, the lawsuit says. Twenty-six employees were granted medical exemptions. The lawsuit cited an article by Los Alamos Reporter, which says that the numbers were disclosed during an all-hands meeting at the lab on Oct. 21. The lab employs nearly 14,000 workers. Two-thirds of all the work at the facility is focused on weapons programs. Nearly one in five of the employees at the lab hold Ph.D. degrees. Triad National Security LLC operates the complex as a contractor for the federal government.
