Myanmar junta sentences aide of Aung San Suu Kyi to 20 years in prison for treason

Myanmar's military junta sentenced a close aide of ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to 20 years in prison for treason on Friday (Oct 29), his lawyer said.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military took power in a coup on Feb 1, with nationwide protests and more than 1,100 people killed by security forces, according to a local monitoring group. "U Win Htein was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment under section 124A by a special court," lawyer Myint Thwin told AFP, adding that they would appeal. The former member of parliament is the first high-ranking member of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy to be sentenced by the junta after a trial.

The 80-year-old is a longtime political prisoner, who has spent long stretches of time in and out of detention for campaigning against military rule.

U.S., EU Near Trade Deal to Remove Steel, Aluminum Tariffs

The U.S. and the European Union are nearing a trade truce on steel and aluminum that will allow the allies to remove tariffs on more than $10 billion of their exports each year.

Negotiators are poised to reach an agreement, possibly over the weekend, according to people familiar with the talks, who asked not to be identified because discussions are ongoing. The transatlantic allies are racing to reach a deal before Dec. 1, when the European tariffs are set to double. The dispute started in 2018, when former U.S. President Donald Trump imposed duties on steel and aluminum from Europe, Asia and elsewhere, citing risks to national security. The EU subsequently retaliated, targeting products including Harley-Davidson Inc. motorcycles, Levi Strauss & Co. jeans and bourbon whiskey.

The EU and U.S. have been negotiating so called tariff-rate quotas, which allow countries to export specified quantities of a product to other nations at lower duty rates, but subjects shipments above a pre-determined threshold to higher tariffs, according to officials.

Toyota announces $461m Kentucky investment

Japanese automaker intends to modernize its first U.S. factory.

Toyota Motor is investing $461 million into its first U.S. plant to add new technology, increase production flexibility and reduce its carbon footprint, the company said Friday in a statement. The announcement didn't include new jobs at the central Kentucky facility, but officials said 1,400 temporary jobs would be converted into permanent positions in an effort to improve recruiting, retain top talent and provide a more inclusive work environment.

Plans include upgrading the Georgetown plant with advanced manufacturing equipment and technologies that will increase speed, flexibility, and competitiveness, the statement said. That includes improvements to expand the plant's ability to manufacture new electric products. The company also plans to add a 2.4-liter turbo engine line, which will support expanding the range of vehicles produced in North America. "As Toyota's most experienced assembly plant in the U.S. with a workforce of about 9,000, TMMK must transform physically and strategically to meet the changing needs of customers," said Susan Elkington, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear praised the announcement and said the state looks forward "to being a part of Toyota's future of electrification." The plant will continue to build the Camry, Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, but production of the Lexus ES and Lexus ES Hybrid will shift back to Japan in 2024.

The plant began its transformation in 2017 with a $1.3 billion investment to equip the facility with the Toyota New Global Architecture manufacturing platform and a new paint operation.

China publishes rules for new Beijing Stock Exchange

China published a set of rules for the newly established Beijing Stock Exchange on Saturday, moving a step closer toward the official launch of a market designed to fund innovative start-ups.

The exchange was set up last month in the Chinese capital, complementing two other bourses in the business hub of Shanghai and the southern city of Shenzhen. Establishing the Beijing Stock Exchange is part of President Xi Jinping’s strategic scheme to develop China’s capital markets, and will support innovation and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said on Saturday. The rules, which were released by the CSRC following a public consultation, aim to regulate public offerings, information disclosure and corporate governance for the Beijing exchange. They will take effect on Nov. 15. China has stepped up support for SMEs struggling in a slowing economy, while cracking down on tech giants under President Xi’s vision of “common prosperity”, a policy drive to narrow the gap between rich and poor.

Late on Friday, the CSRC published draft guidance that will require higher-quality information disclosure in companies’ prospectuses under China’s registration-based IPO system, on which the Beijing Stock Exchange will be based. Shanghai’s tech-heavy STAR Market and Shenzhen’s start-up board ChiNext have also adopted a U.S.-style registration-based IPO mechanism, which gives the market a bigger role in evaluating and pricing IPOs.

Yellen called Biden's $1.75T spending plan 'anti-inflationary'

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s inflation view took another turn earlier this month when she suggested inflation is not going away anytime soon.

Inflation is currently running at 3.6% annually, according to the core personal consumption expenditures index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure. The reading has held at a 30-year high for four consecutive months. The Federal Reserve typically targets 2% inflation when setting economic policy. "Supply bottlenecks have developed that have caused inflation," Yellen, who served as Fed chair under former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, told CNBC on Oct. 5. "I believe that they’re transitory, but that doesn’t mean they’ll go away over the next several months." That represented a sharp U-turn from Yellen’s previous comments on inflation.

In June, Yellen said inflation could hit 3%, but that pricing pressures would be "transitory." That after saying in March that inflation risks were "small and manageable." A month prior, she said the Biden administration has the tools to deal with any inflation risks that materialize. The Treasury Department did not respond to FOX Business’ request for comment. Yellen on Friday once again attempted to tackle the inflation elephant, suggesting that President Biden’s proposed $1.75 trillion spending package would drive down inflation if it were to be passed by Congress. "What this package will do is lower some of the most important costs, what they pay for health care, for child care," Yellen told CNBC in a separate interview on Friday. "It’s anti-inflationary."

Not everyone is on board with the idea that government involvement in those areas will reduce costs. "Government subsidies have always led to higher prices," said Stephen Moore, a senior fellow at FreedomWorks who served as an economic adviser to Trump. He pointed to surging college tuitions and health care costs as evidence. Moore said there was "no question" that passing Biden’s human infrastructure plan would "greatly exacerbate inflation" and make the costs of child care and health care rise.
