HNA-Linked 245 Park Avenue Files for Bankruptcy in Delaware

Entities linked to 245 Park Avenue, a Manhattan skyscraper tied to Chinaโ€™s HNA Group Co., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, court papers showed. The listed assets and liabilities are between $1 billion to $10 billion, the filing showed. Tax authorities in Chicago and New York City were listed as the two biggest creditors, where it owes more than $23 million in property taxes. The filing showed the company has enough funds for distribution to unsecured creditors. Three years ago, HNA listed the Manhattan property among the assets that it was putting up for sale as it marketed more than $40 billion of its holdings to cut its debt load. At the time, the building was valued by the company at $2.21 billion.

Japan's ruling LDP secures sole majority in lower house election

PM Kishida says the ruling camp has 'secured a public mandate'

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party secured a sole majority in the lower house of parliament in Sunday's general election, despite losing a sizable number of seats including several high-profile former cabinet ministers.

Despite the LDP's worst showing in 12 years, the party and junior coalition partner Komeito maintained a comfortable majority. The victory puts Prime Minister Fumio Kishida clear of the low target he set for the ruling camp of winning a simple majority.

"If the coalition is able to keep a majority, I take that as meaning that we have secured a public mandate," Kishida said in televised comments.

The election serves as a public verdict on the government's handling of the COVID-19 crisis and the coalition's near decade in power. Some senior LDP politicians are struggling to keep their seats, among them former party No. 2 Nobuteru Ishihara, and IT minister Takuya Hirai.

The tough going for some LDP candidates indicates "the government's failure to fully address voter frustration and unease about the COVID pandemic," said LDP secretary general Akira Amari, who lost his seat but stayed in parliament via the proportional representation vote. Amari has told Kishida that he intends to step down as secretary-general, which poses a dilemma for the prime minister. Losing Amari's expertise in economic security and energy policy would hinder the administration's ability to make policy in these key fields, but keeping him on despite his high-profile loss could be unpopular with others in the party.

The LDP is likely to win fewer than the 276 seats it held before the dissolution of the lower house on Oct. 14. The party faced a much tougher electoral challenge from a unified opposition, with the Constitutional Democratic Party, the biggest opposition group, forming an electoral coalition with other parties including the Japanese Communist Party.

The CDP is expected to fall short of the 110 seats it held going into the election, but will maintain its status as the biggest opposition force. The party is the successor to the Democratic Party of Japan, which was in power from 2009 to 2012. Many former DPJ cabinet ministers are in the CDP, including its leader, Yukio Edano.

Japan PM Kishida eager to visit U.S. soon for talks with Biden

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday expressed eagerness to visit the United States soon for a meeting with President Joe Biden. "Given that Japan-U.S. relations are the cornerstone of Japan's diplomacy, I would like to visit the United States as soon as possible for a Japan-U.S. summit," Kishida said after it became certain that his ruling coalition has retained its majority in the House of Representatives in the general election.

Kishida also told an NHK program that he wants to attend in person the leaders' session of U.N. climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland, in early November.
