Clinton aide Huma Abedin blasts Comey for 'decision to play God' during 2016 election

by Daniel Chaitin, Deputy News Editor | November 01, 2021 11:14 PM

Huma Abedin blames former FBI Director James Comey for her longtime boss Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

In her new book, Both/And , Abedin wrote about how Comey has haunted her since he informed Congress just days before the election that the FBI

was reopening its investigation into Clinton's use of an unauthorized private email server during her time as secretary of state after discovering a batch

of emails on a laptop belonging to Abedin's now-estranged husband Anthony Weiner.

"For a long time, Comey was a daily nightmare for me, and even now the thought of what he did sometimes creeps in to torture me,"

Abedin wrote, according to Insider . "But I have slowly come to accept that I am not the sole cause of the 2016 election loss."

"One man's decision to play God forever changed the course of history. It should not be my burden to carry the rest of my life. It should be his,"

she added.

On Nov. 6, 2016, two days before the election, Comey sent a follow-up letter that said “we have not changed our conclusions"

about not charging Clinton after he initially announced during a July 2016 speech that Clinton was “extremely careless” in handling classified emails

but said he would not recommend criminal charges. Trump defeated Clinton 304-227 in the Electoral College two days later.

Some of the emails discovered on Weiner's laptop, which federal investigators were searching for his online relationship with a minor,

were exchanged between Clinton and Abedin, according to a Justice Department inspector general report.

Abedin wrote that she told Weiner on Oct. 28, the day Comey's first letter was sent, that if Clinton were to lose the 2016 election,

"it will be because of you and me."

Abedin wrote that Weiner, who was in a rehab treatment facility at the time, said in a call, "I am sure it's a mistake and they will figure it out."

But Abedin compared Comey's first letter to a "nuclear bomb."

"She said she wrote in her notebook that night: "I do not know how I am going to survive this. Help me God."

Abedin married Weiner in 2010, and they have one son together.

Abedin also reflects in Both/And on the "rage" she felt after Weiner shared a lewd photo with the world.

Abedin filed for divorce in 2017 from Weiner, a former congressman from New York, after he pleaded guilty to sexting a minor.

Weiner served 18 months of a 21-month prison sentence for sexting with a 15-year-old girl, after which he was released in May 2019.

Clinton has also blamed Comey for her loss in 2016 among more than a dozen other people and things.

"The determining factor was the intervention by Comey on Oct. 28. ... but for that intervention, I would have won," she said in 2017.

Comey said last year he regretted being involved in the 2016 election.

"We were stuck and I think we made the right decisions, choosing between terrible options.

I wasn’t trying, nor was anybody else in the FBI, trying to elect or not elect anybody," he said.
