>Here is the thing about education:

>All "schools" have to be accredited. That's where the sting comes in.

They get colleges this way too.

It boggles the mind. You might think that professors at elite colleges would be in control of at least educational policy. (Or you might have thought that in the not so distant past.) But actually they are insidiously controlled by outside bodies in ways that seem innocuous on the surface but end up warping everything.

Of course, now the whole higher ed process is utterly screwed, but you might have thought that once someone with a PhD is put in charge of their classes, then THEY are in charge. They are supposed to be the ultimate experts, right? Nope.

Of course none of this is surprising now when we see world-class scientists censored for speaking in their domain of expertise, but this sort of thing has been growing over time.

> Iserbyt's "Dumbing Down of America" tells the tale in excruciating detail.

I still haven't read that one yet, but Gatto's Underground History of American Eduation is great. A mix of personal reflections and historical forays, but it works as a coherent whole, I think. I haven't read that since pre-Q, but its one I might go back to reread at some point. I think he had the experience of many people of going at it with all sincerity and basically WINNING... and coming to the slow but horrible realization that the people "in charge" are actually aiming to fuck you.

But the ultimate catch is that they ain't so smart!
