Biden headed to Detroit Wednesday to talk infrastructure, visit GM plant

Joe Biden will visit Detroit Wednesday two days after he is expected to sign the $1.2 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the White House said Thursday. The visit to the General Motors Co.'s Factory ZERO electric vehicle assembly plant will be Biden's first visit since an Oct. 5 visit to Howell, where he touted infrastructure spending. The Democratic president is expected to revisit the topic during Wednesday's stop in Detroit after a scheduled Monday bill signing. The Detroit factory is one of four that GM plans to have in North American making electric vehicles. The automaker's plan is to offer 30 EVs offered by 2025 and provide an all zero-emissions lineup by 2035. This is the first year GM is spending more money investing in EVs than it is in gas-and-diesel-powered products.

S&P Announces Florida’s AAA Credit Rating Ranks Higher than the Nation

This week, Standard and Poor’s (S&P) confirmed Florida’s AAA Stable rating on Florida’s General Obligation (GO) bonds, the highest rating available, and established that Florida has earned a rating that is higher than the nation. This AAA rating reaffirms that Florida is leading in responsible governance and the Florida economy is continuing to grow and thrive.

Florida’s AAA rating places the state above the nation’s rating of AA+. Florida is also outranking other high population states with California only earning a AA-, and New York only earning a AA+. S&P is one of the nation’s leading bond rating companies and provides high-quality, independent opinions on creditworthiness. “Florida’s economy is strong because we have kept the state open, maintained a positive economic climate, taxed lightly and spent wisely,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Florida is yet again outpacing the nation, and the state is well-positioned to weather future economic challenges.”

The S&P report finds that Florida is in a superior position compared to the nation as a whole, asserting “Florida’s GO bonds are eligible to be rated above the sovereign because we believe the state can maintain better credit characteristics than the U.S. in a stress scenario.” The S&P report is further testimony that Florida’s commitment to job growth and investments in infrastructure and workforce education are key to having a stable economic environment. The strong rating will allow Florida to continue to provide opportunities for business growth in the long-term.

Trump reaches $375M deal to sell DC hotel - WSJ

Former President Donald Trump’s family hotel company has reached a deal to sell the rights to its Washington, D.C., hotel for $375 million, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Miami-based investment firm CGI Merchant Group is in contract to acquire the lease, the newspaper said. The Trump International Hotel is in a historic building a few blocks from the White House that the Trump Organization leases from the U.S. government. The hotel has been a popular gathering spot for Trump supporters and foreign dignitaries.

The newspaper said CGI intends to remove the Trump name and has reached an agreement with Hilton Worldwide Holdings to have the property managed and branded by Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria group. The Trump organization, CGI Merchant and Hilton did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment on Sunday.

Last month, the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform said newly obtained government documents raised “troubling” questions about the hotel. According to the Democratic-controlled committee, Trump reported that the hotel earned him more than $150 million during his time in office but actually lost more than $70 million.

The committee found that the hotel received more than $3.7 million in payments from foreign governments - equal to more than 7,400 nights at the hotel, raising a potential conflict of interest.

The hotel is in the city’s second-tallest structure, after the Washington Monument. The building previously housed the U.S. Post Office Department Headquarters.
