Chart of the Day: Who Owns Cryptocurrency?

https://rightwirereport.com/2021/11/18/chart-of-the-day-who-owns-cryptocurrency/

Latin America leads in cryptocurrency ownership, with 30% of adults there holding the digital assets. Within the region, ownership jumps as high as 45% in Argentina. In second place is Asia-Pacific, where 24% of adults are crypto owners, while the US and Canada come in third, with 19% investing in these digital currencies. Often the topic of the legality of cryptocurrency comes up. In the US Constitution, the coinage of money is specifically mentioned in the coinage clause.

Article I, Section 8, Clause 5: The Congress shall have Power To…coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin …

Congress’s power to coin money is exclusive. Article I, Section 10, Clause 1 (State Coinage) does not allow the states to “coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; [or] make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts …” Whereas the prohibitions on the states are clear and detailed, Congress’s grant of power under the Coinage Clause is open-ended.

Nonetheless, certain elements are clear. First, this clause grants Congress the authority to “coin money” from precious metals such as gold and silver. Under the Articles of Confederation, the power to coin money was a concurrent power of Congress and the states. To create a more standardized monetary system and reduce the costs of running mints, the Constitution granted this power to Congress exclusively. The elimination of the states’ power to coin money and the exclusive grant to Congress provoked controversy because the power to coin money was traditionally understood as a symbol of political sovereignty.....moar..

Shiitake Mushrooms Proven to Benefit Dozens of Diseases

another short news day, some knowledge that is good for you

If you’re looking for a superfood to support your immune system health and act as an overall health tonic, shiitake mushrooms are a top choice. As a bonus, they impart a savory umami flavor to virtually any meal they touch.

Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) have been prized for their anticancer and immunomodulating properties since ancient times and are a mainstay of traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, shiitake mushrooms were harvested from mountainous regions in Asia, but today they’re the second most widely cultivated mushroom variety in the world—second only to the common button mushroom.

Shiitake mushrooms are also a popular culinary-medicinal mushroom in Japan, and the word shiitake comes from the Japanese words shii, or “from a hardwood tree,” and “take,” or “mushroom.”

Their rich, earthy, almost buttery flavor is packed with umami, the fifth taste that’s hard to put into words but is often described as meaty and savory. This makes them an ideal meat substitute in vegetarian dishes and a worthy addition to soups, stews, seafood, and poultry dishes. Looking for even more good reasons to add shiitake mushrooms to your meals? They’re linked to notable benefits to your health.

A Shiitake a Day …

Shiitake mushrooms are a rich source of protein, fiber, minerals, and vitamins, including B1, B2, B12, C, D, and niacin, as well as antioxidants and beta-glucans. They contain the most vitamin D of any plant food.

A form of beta-glucans in shiitake mushrooms, known as lentinans, are believed to play a role in mushroom’s immunomodulatory effects, while other beta-glucans have documented stimulatory effects on the immune system that are strong enough to ward off influenza in animal studies.

Lentinan extracts have also been found to produce immunomodulatory and pulmonary cytoprotective effects that can reduce oxidative stress, activate beneficial macrophages that are part of your innate immune system, and even ameliorate the inflammatory cytokine storm that causes potentially fatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Even eating a reasonable amount—4 ounces—of dried shiitake mushrooms daily can have a significant impact on your immune function. When researchers gave a daily four-ounce serving of dried shiitake mushrooms to healthy adults between the ages of 21 and 41 for four weeks, improved immunity resulted, including increased cell proliferation and reduced C-reactive protein, a measure of inflammation.

The immunomodulatory effects of lentinans are so strong that they also reduced infection by antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria that had led to pulmonary sepsis in rodents. Bacterial infection is a leading cause of ARDS, which in turn is often lethal in critically ill patients. Administering lentinan to bolster the immune system may be a promising solution.

Prized for Anticancer Effects

By boosting your immune system, shiitake mushrooms have notable anticancer effects. Some research also suggests they may have antitumor activity that works on cells directly, even without immune system involvement.

When taken orally, lentinan extract from shiitake mushrooms led to significant regression in tumor formation in mice with colon cancer. It also led to “remarkable” antitumor effects in mice “not only by enhancing the immunity but also by directly killing the tumor and the induction of tumor cell apoptosis,” wrote researchers in a 2013 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Even in the case of advanced pancreatic cancer, lentinan increased patients’ survival time and improved quality of life. What’s more, beta-glucans from shiitake mushrooms are capable of selectively inducing cell death of breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched, while mycelia extract from the mushroom reduced the incidence of adverse effects from chemotherapy when taken by patients with advanced cancer.

Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC), a supplement that’s made from shiitake mushroom mycelia, is made up of a powerful mixture of amino acids, minerals, and polysaccharides. It acts as an immune system enhancer against tumor cells and pathogens and is the second most popular complementary and alternative medicine used by cancer patients in Japan.

Lentinan has also been singled out as a promising therapy for a number of human cancers, including lung, gastric, colorectal, ovarian, cervical, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

IRS Sees Crypto Seizures Worth Billions of Dollars Next Year

The Internal Revenue Service could seize cryptocurrency valued at billions of dollars that’s linked to tax fraud and other crimes in the coming year, according to the agency’s head of criminal investigations.

The IRS seized $3.5 billion worth of cryptocurrencies during fiscal year 2021, a figure that accounted for 93% of all the assets seized by tax enforcement that year, according to an IRS criminal investigation annual report published Thursday.

“I expect a trend of crypto seizures to continue as we move forward into fiscal year ‘22,” IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Jim Lee said on a call with reporters. “We’re seeing crypto involved in a number of our crimes as we move forward.”

In the past year, the IRS’s criminal unit seized billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin and other virtual currencies connected to cases involving a range of criminal activities, such as wire fraud, money laundering, the distribution of illegal narcotics, and tax fraud. That included $1 billion stolen from the Silk Road, an online Bitcoin exchange that was shut down in 2013.

The unit also prosecuted a former Microsoft Corp. software developer who used cryptocurrency to hide $10 million he embezzled from the company.

The Criminal Investigation unit “has prioritized training and the deployment of cryptocurrency, blockchain and open-source intelligence (OSINT) technologies to unravel complex cyber-financial criminal schemes,” the division said in its report.

To further advance those efforts, the unit is opening an Advanced Collaboration & Data Center in Northern Virginia in 2022.

Congress recently granted the IRS more ability to surveil cryptocurrency transactions in the infrastructure package President Joe Biden signed into law on Monday. That law will require crypto brokers to track and report transactions to the IRS in an effort to give tax authorities more visibility into virtual currency trades.

The agency could also benefit from an additional $80 billion in funding that Democrats are proposing in Biden’s Build Back Better plan, which could get a vote in the House as soon as Thursday. Lee said that money is desperately needed in his unit to hire more 250 to 300 more special agents, as well as invest in systems to identify and track cyber crimes.

California start-ups to develop new aviation fuel for supersonic military aircraft

https://defence-blog.com/california-start-ups-to-develop-new-aviation-fuel-for-supersonic-military-aircraft/

Exosonic, Inc., an aviation firm focused on supersonic aircraft development, announced that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with carbon transformation company Twelve to work cooperatively to expand Twelve’s sustainable aviation fuel to be 100% compatible with Exosonic’s supersonic jet engines.

According to a company news release, support and funding from the United States Air Force (USAF) have allowed the two California-based start-ups to accelerate their growth and research.

Exosonic and Twelve are working with the USAF through independent small business innovation research (SBIR) contracts sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory. Most recently, Twelve announced that the USAF supported the production of the first fossil-free jet fuel from carbon dioxide (CO2) electrolysis called E-Jet, demonstrating a scalable, energy-efficient path to the de-fossilization of global commercial and military aviation. In addition, Exosonic has received USAF support to develop and modify the company’s commercial supersonic airliner to serve as an executive transport vehicle.

“We’re excited to partner with Twelve, an innovative company developing the carbon-neutral jet fuel of the future,” says Norris Tie, CEO and co-founder of Exosonic. “We believe the aviation industry needs to move towards more sustainable solutions. Exosonic looks forward to working with Twelve to include their fuel in our quiet supersonic airliner and across all of our supersonic UAV product lines. Exosonic must be sustainable from Day 1, and our partnership is a great start to that vision.”

“Shifting our global economy away from fossil fuels requires an all hands on deck approach. This is especially true when it comes to air travel, which is one of the hardest-to-abate sectors. Creating a drop-in ready jet fuel from CO2 enables aviation that can ultimately become carbon neutral. Partnering with Exosonic will enable long distance, supersonic aviation while minimizing emissions,” said Nicholas Flanders, Twelve co-founder and CEO.
