The aircraft is an extensively modified C-135. The Rivet Joint's modifications are primarily related to its on-board sensor suite, which allows the mission crew to detect, identify and geolocate signals throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. The mission crew can then forward gathered information in a variety of formats to a wide range of consumers via Rivet Joint's extensive communications suite.
The interior seats more than 30 people, including the cockpit crew, electronic warfare officers, intelligence operators and in-flight maintenance technicians.
The Rivet Joint fleet was re-engined with CFM-56 engines with an upgraded flight deck instrumentation and navigational systems to FAA/ICAO standards. These standards include conversion from analog readouts to a digital "glass cockpit" configuration.
All Rivet Joint airframe and mission systems modifications are overseen by L-3 Communications (previously Raytheon), under the oversight of Air Force Materiel Command.

Two former Vatican bankers were convicted of mismanaging assets and sentenced to repay 40.7 million euros ($46.2 million), more than the bank’s net income in 2020.
Paolo Cipriani, former director general of the Institute for the Works of Religion, and his deputy Massimo Tulli, were taken to court by the institute the Vatican’s bank as part of a transparency drive by Pope Francis. They’re guilty of causing “patrimonial and moral” damage to the bank, the Vatican appellate court said in a ruling published Friday.
The investments under scrutiny include funds in Luxembourg and Malta that underwrote real estate purchases, including the former stock exchange building in Budapest. The operations, which happened between 2010 and 2013, “proved to be immediately harmful as problematic and, in several cases, also illegitimate and subject to criminal proceedings,” according to the sentence.
The bank has often been surrounded by scandal in recent decades. In a separate case, the Vatican is still dealing with the fallout of the purchase of a luxury building in London for which it has spent some 350 million euros.
The Vatican bank has about 5 billion euros of assets under management. It reported a profit of 36.4 million euros in 2020.

IRS to start requiring facial recognition scans to access tax returns
The Internal Revenue Service is going to start requiring users of its online tax payment system to provide a selfie to a third-party company in order to access their accounts.
Beginning in summer 2022, users who need to log on to the IRS' website to access the Child Tax Credit Update Portal, check online accounts, get their tax transcript, receive an Identity Protection PIN or view an online payment agreement will need to create an account with identity verification company ID.me. Existing online accounts, which currently only require a simple email and password to access, will no longer work beginning this summer, the IRS said. At that point, users will be required to create an account with ID.me.
