Tesla Countersues JPMorgan in Fight Over Warrants
The automaker alleges the bank’s dislike of Elon Musk is behind its $162 million lawsuit in November. The dispute is raising curtains on the bad relationship between the country’s largest bank and the world’s most valuable auto maker. JPMorgan has been slammed by Tesla over business deals and executives at the companies have clashed, including chief executive Jamie Dimon and Elon Musk, Businesshala reports.
Tesla claims that the feud is actually behind JPMorgan’s lawsuit. It alleged that the bank’s action was “bad faith and greed”.
Tesla alleged, “JPM as an act of retaliation against Tesla by pressuring its excessive demand to pursue JPM in major business deals and JPM’s senior executives’ opposition to Mr. Musk.”
Mr Musk said he would write a one-star review on Yelp if the bank did not withdraw the lawsuit.
JPMorgan said on Monday that there was no merit in its claim. It comes down to fulfilling contractual obligations. ,
The controversy centers on one of Mr Musk’s more turbulent episodes, when he messed with taking Tesla private in 2018. He was later forced to step down as chairman in a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission over his tweets about it. In 2014, JPMorgan acquired warrants from Tesla as part of a convertible bond sale working for the auto maker along with other banks. The warrant allowed banks to acquire stock in Tesla at a set price when it expires in June and July 2021.
JPMorgan has claimed that Mr Musk influenced the value of the warrant when he tweeted in 2018 that he had the funds to take Tesla private. The bank used his tweets as a justification for lowering the strike price of the warrant, which could give it more leverage if Tesla’s stock rises. Last summer, Tesla paid based on the original price but declined to accept JPMorgan’s change. Tesla said on Monday that the bank had received billions of dollars in stock.
Tesla said on Monday that JPMorgan had no right to make changes and demand more money, as it said the bank didn’t really believe Mr Musk would take Tesla private. It said Mr Musk’s tweets did not affect the price and that none of the other banks made changes.
Tesla said the bank broke the contract and should have canceled the warrant and returned it instead. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and charges from the bank.

Taliban in Norway for talks with Western envoys
Taliban members are in Norway for talks with officials from Western countries. The visit to Europe is their first since the group retook control of Afghanistan last August.
The Taliban representatives and envoys from the West discussed the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Half of the population faces food shortages.
Officials from Western countries including the United States and Britain are thought to have demanded an improvement of the welfare situation as a condition for aid.
Ahead of the talks, the Taliban delegates said they would seek the unfreezing of Afghan assets overseas. The Taliban mission, led by acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, has been in Oslo since Saturday.
On Sunday, the group met with human rights activists who fled Afghanistan.
The Taliban released a joint statement, saying both sides agreed to work together to improve Afghanistan's economic, political and security situations. It says participants agreed the solutions for Afghanistan's problems are understanding and joint cooperation.

F-35 And F-117 Spotted Flying With Mysterious Mirror-Like Skin
Recent work being done to test a mysterious metallic-looking coating on stealthy aircraft has expanded to the F-117 Nighthawk and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. New images of both types show examples wearing the exotic skin coating that can go from appearing mirror-like to a matte-like depending on the angle at which it is viewed.
While the U.S. Air Force officially retired the F-117 nearly a decade and a half ago, examples continue to fly developmental and test missions, as well as fulfilling a stealthy adversary role. The testing of new coatings has long been part of the Nighthawk's post-retirement activities. Now, after an F-22 began flying with a mirror-like coating out of Nellis Air Force Base last November, and Scaled Composites 'Son Of Ares' demonstrator aircraft also donned the metallic finish a year and a half prior, we can say for certain that the F-117s have joined the metallic coating testing fray. The F-35, on the other hand, like the F-22, is a front-line platform. The fact that the Pentagon's other 5th generation fighter, and one from the Navy no less, is also wearing this treatment points to some interesting possibilities.
The images of the mirror-finished F-117 come to us from a photographer that was lucky enough to stumble upon a pair of the stealth attack jets in mid-January as they were flying near Eureka Dunes in the Saline Military Operating Area (MOA), which lays on the California side of the border with Nevada. The mirrored jet had a standard black-painted wingman and they made multiple passes overhead and the black jet did some low-level work through the area.
As you can see, the F-117 has its leading edges and upper fuselage and tails covered in the mirror-like coating very similar to the one seen on the F-22 that has been flying out of Nellis. This is not the first time the F-117 has worn a similar exotic mirror-like skin. As we wrote in December, back in the early 1990s, a mirror-like metallic finish was tested on an F-117 under the SENIOR SPUD program. That program looked at ways to significantly reduce the Nighthawk's infrared signature and was likely a progenitor of what we are seeing today. Now, nearly 30 years later, the 'Black Jet' is back in a silver skin again.

F-35 Stealth Jet Crashes On US Carrier In South China Sea, 7 Injured
An F-35C Stealth fighter jet has crash landed aboard the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in the South China Sea on Monday, the US Navy announced, inuring seven, including the pilot who successfully ejected and was recovered in the sea by a military helicopter.
"An F-35C Lightning II, assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, had a landing mishap on deck while USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) was conducting routine flight operations in the South China Sea, Jan. 24, 2022," a military statement said.
The six others had been injured on the carrier's deck, and three were airlifted to a hospital in Manila, Philippines, with all now said to be in stable condition. The cause of the crash is under investigation, with the preliminary statement calling it an "inflight mishap".
The F-35 stealth manufacturer Lockheed Martin had announced last August when the USS Vinson had departed San Diego, "This deployment marks the first time in U.S. naval aviation history that a stealth strike fighter has been deployed operationally on an aircraft carrier."
One prominent China state media pundit in the West was quick to weigh in on the accident, saying the United States "should not be there in the first place"...
You (warplanes) should not be there in the first place. It’s nowhere near the US.
— Chen Weihua (陈卫华) (@chenweihua) January 24, 2022
The pilot is reportedly among those in stable condition, with the Navy statement citing that he "safely ejected".
Last November, a British F-35 stealth jet has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea during what was described at the time as routine flying operations from the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. F-35 fighters are an estimated 135 million dollars, with cutting-edge stealth technology and radar.

Singapore tightens monetary policy in off-cycle inflation fight
Singapore's central bank said on Tuesday it was tightening its monetary policy settings, in an out-of-cycle move, as global supply constraints and brisk economic demand fan inflation risks. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) manages monetary policy through exchange rate settings, rather than interest rates, letting the local dollar rise or fall against the currencies of its main trading partners within an undisclosed band.
It adjusts its policy via three levers: the slope, mid-point and width of the policy band, known as the Nominal Effective Exchange Rate, or S$NEER.
The MAS said it would raise slightly the rate of appreciation of its policy band. The width of the policy band and the level at which it is centered will be unchanged. Selena Ling, head of treasury research and strategy at OCBC, said she expects the central bank to tighten again in April, describing Tuesday's move as only a "slight tightening" of the slope. "If they had announced a more aggressive tightening today, then that would have dampened expectations for April," Ling said.
Tuesday's tightening came just a day after data showed Singapore's key price gauge climbed in December by the fastest pace in nearly eight years. "This move builds on the pre-emptive shift to an appreciating stance in October 2021 and is appropriate for ensuring medium-term price stability," the MAS said, referring to its tightening move late last year.
The central bank is scheduled to review settings at a semi-annual policy meeting in April, when it was widely expected by economists to make a tightening move.
The Singapore dollar strengthened to 1.3425 versus the U.S. dollar following the surprise move, its highest since October 2021.
The MAS said it expects core inflation to be 2.0-3.0% this year, from the 1.0-2.0% expected in October. Headline inflation is expected to be 2.5-3.5%, from the earlier forecast range of 1.5-2.5%. "While core inflation is expected to moderate in the second half of the year from the elevated levels in the first half as supply constraints ease, the risks remain skewed to the upside," the MAS said.
The economy is expected to grow 3-5%, unchanged from earlier forecasts.
