Casino mogul Steve Wynn must register as foreign agent, US says

The order stems from allegations that Wynn tried to persuade American officials in the summer of 2017 to send Guo Wengui, a Chinese businessman with ties to former President Donald Trump, back to his home country.

The U.S. Justice Department has told former casino magnate Steve Wynn to register as a foreign lobbyist for China and is ready to go to court if he doesn’t comply, a person familiar with the matter said.

The order stems from allegations that Wynn tried to persuade American officials in the summer of 2017 to send Guo Wengui, a Chinese businessman with ties to former President Donald Trump, back to his home country, according to the person, who asked not to be identified discussing a pending inquiry.

Reid Weingarten, Wynn’s attorney, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Guo, who fled China in late 2014, was charged there with corruption, bribery and fraud and is considered a fugitive by Chinese authorities. The Wall Street Journal, which reported earlier on the Justice Department inquiry on Wynn, quoted Guo as saying he was glad to hear the department is investigating Wynn and that “they should criminally indict him for serving as a greedy spy of the Chinese Communist Party.”

Gao is a member of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and has worked with former Trump adviser Stephen Bannon. Bannon was aboard Guo’s yacht off the coast of Connecticut when he was arrested last year and charged with defrauding donors to a foundation that was privately funding construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump pardoned him as he was about to leave office and a federal judge dismissed the indictment earlier this week.

Under the Foreign Agent Registration Act, passed in 1938, any person representing the interest of foreign entities in the U.S. — including governments — must disclose their relationship to the Justice Department. They also need to make public all of the activities they’ve done on their behalf and, if applicable, how much they were paid.

Wynn, 79, helped develop the modern Las Vegas into a destination for upscale travelers as well as hardcore gamblers. His resorts, such as the Mirage and Bellagio, were famous for their outdoor spectacles, such as fountains and a faux volcano. Wynn Resorts Ltd., which he started after selling his first company, was one of just three U.S. operators to score licenses in Macau, a Chinese territory that would become the world’s largest gambling market.

A long-time Republican, he formerly spearheaded the party’s fund-raising efforts and helped organize Trump’s inauguration celebration.

Wynn ran into trouble after a number of former employees came public with stories of sexual harassment by him. He stepped down from the company that still bears his name and sold all of his shares in 2018 for a total of more than $2 billion.

He currently has a net worth of about $3.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He remains a prolific political donor and in 2020 gave a total of $708,500 to Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee that raised money for Trump’s campaign, the Republican National Committee and state parties.

Google thwarted in Arizona attorney general’s suit to block user tracking

January 25, 2022

An Arizona suit to stop Google from tracking consumers targeted by ads received the green light today from a state court.

In a case worth billions of dollars that has worried Big Tech and thrilled privacy advocates, a state judge allowed Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s suit to move toward trial, his latest win in a case with potentially national implications.

“Great win for Arizona consumers today. For too long, the company has used deceptive and unfair practices to allegedly obtain users’ location data to help fund its lucrative advertising business. We will not stand by as Big Tech continues to invade Arizonans’ personal privacy,” Brnovich said in a statement to Secrets.

The decision came a day after three states and the district filed their own user tracking suits against Google.

Judge Timothy Thomason sided with Brnovich in two of three complaints in the case that concern consumer tracking by apps and Android phones. Google had sought a summary judgment in the case.

Brnovich, a 2022 GOP Senate candidate targeting Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, sued Google last May, claiming it used devices to track users for advertising purposes.

His action followed reports that Google could track users' locations even after they had turned location tracking off. Subsequent stories showed that even Google insiders were concerned that the firm could track people who otherwise thought they had gone incognito.

When Brnovich made his initial filing, he explained, “While Google users are led to believe they can opt-out of location tracking, the company exploits other avenues to invade personal privacy. It’s nearly impossible to stop Google from tracking your movements without your knowledge or consent. This is contrary to the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act and even the most innovative companies must operate within the law.”

Dominion Voting Systems will not seek settlement in defamation suits against Lindell, Giuliani, and Powell

January 26, 2022

Dominion Voting Systems will not seek a settlement in its $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit against prominent Trump supporters including MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell.

In a court filing Monday, the company said there is no "realistic possibility" of a settlement in its cases against the prominent Trump supporters, each of whom claimed Dominion was part of a "national conspiracy" of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

"Given the devastating harm to Plaintiffs, the lack of remorse shown by Defendants, and the fact that many of them continue to double down on their lies, Plaintiffs do not believe any realistic possibility of settlement exists," the company's lawyers wrote in the documents, which were first reported by Business Insider.

The papers were jointly filed with lawyers for the defendants in a case that will be presided over by U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols. The judge allowed Dominion's defamation lawsuits to proceed in August after dismissing an attempt by Powell, Giuliani, and Lindell to have the cases dismissed. Nichols also consolidated the cases so that they would be heard together.

Lawyers for defendants Powell and Giuliani argued in the filings that their claims about Dominion's voting machines did not meet the legal standard for defamation.

"Powell and Giuliani are open to settlement discussions once discovery is complete and Dominion realizes that its claims are without merit and that it has no damages legally attributable to Powell and Giuliani," the filing said. "Powell and Giuliani have nothing to show remorse for and dispute that they have lied about anything."

Attorneys for Powell and Giuliani said they will participate in the discovery process for the lawsuit. However, Business Insider reported Giuliani's lawyers said he is currently unable to turn over documents because the FBI took possession of his digital files when it raided his home in May as part of an investigation into whether he violated lobbying laws.

Lindell said he will not participate in the discovery process. He informed Insider that he intends to appeal Nichols' denial of his motion to dismiss the defamation suit all the way to the Supreme Court.

He also said he will "never settle" with Dominion and has filed a counter lawsuit for $1.6 billion against the voting machine manufacturer, Business Insider reported.

"They are prison bound! They are trying to cover up their crimes and committing more crimes in the process!"Lindell said, informing the outlet "many new charges and lawsuits" will be brought against Dominion in the "next two to three weeks."

Dominion has vigorously denied the claims made by Lindell, Powell, and Giuliani, including the allegation that Dominion machines used software manufactured in Venezuela to help Hugo Chavez fraudulently win elections, among other unproven accusations. Dominion is an American company based in Denver and Toronto and has no ownership ties to the government of Venezuela.

The company alleges that Lindell, a self-made millionaire and staunch Trump supporter, advanced false and defamatory claims about Dominion's voting machines in order to "sell more pillows." The CEO has claimed that following his public statements on the 2020 election he has lost retailers and been the victim of "cancel culture."

Dominion is also suing Fox News for $1.6 billion, accusing the network of falsely reporting election fraud claims after being shown evidence that disproved the accusations leveled against the company.

Elon Musk offered $5,000 to get a teen to halt the Twitter bot tracking his jet

January 27, 2022

Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered $5,000 to a teenager who built a Twitter bot that’s been tracking his jet — in exchange for him getting rid of the bot. Nineteen-year-old Jack Sweeney created the Twitter bots that have been tracking billionaires’ private jets, including Musk’s.

Elon Musk offered $5,000 to halt the Twitter bot tracking his jet

Sweeney, a freshman at the University of Central Florida, has now asked for an internship instead of the $5,000 Elon Musk offered. Sweeney told the Daily Mail, that he would be interested in interning at either Tesla or SpaceX, but Musk has not responded to his request. However, the Tesla CEO did say before Sweeney asked for the internship that it “doesn’t feel right” to pay him to take the Twitter bot tracking his jet down.

According to Protocol, Musk opened the conversation with Sweeney over direct messaging on Twitter this past fall. The bot in question is attached to the Twitter account @ElonJet, and it tracks the movements of Musk’s jet around the globe. Initially, Sweeney told Musk that it would cost him a Model 3, “only joking unless?”

Sweeney has created 15 different Twitter accounts tracking the private jets of billionaires, most of whom are in the tech space. Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are among those whose private jets Sweeney’s bots are tracking, but Musk’s tracker is the most popular with over 90,000 followers as of the time of this writing.

Responses

Now that the story is getting a lot of attention, Sweeney posted a tweet saying that his Twitter bot “has every right to post jet whereabouts” because flight data is public, every aircraft in the world is required to have a transponder, and Twitter’s policy states that data found on other sites can be shared.

The Daily Mail reports that Musk appears to be trolling Sweeney by sending his jet on flights when he is known to be somewhere else.
