Japan: Gold Pegged Cryptocurrency ZPG To Be Issued This Month
While stablecoins are known for their stability, cryptocurrencies are feared for their volatility. Sadly there wasnโt any cryptocurrency that managed to combine them as such and allow the existence of a more stable cryptocurrency.
In a report from Nikkei Asia today, the news agency reported on the announcement of Japanese trading company Mitsui & Co.โs plans of issuing a gold pegged cryptocurrency in the country. The coin known as ZipangCoin (ZPG) will be available for trading as soon as this month.
Unlike traditional stablecoins, ZipangCoin will not be valued at 1 JPY or 1 USD. The value of ZipangCoin is set to similar to the value of one gram of gold. This means that 1 ZPG will be equal to approximately 6,280 JPY or 54.64 USD. The valueโs correlationโs consistency will be backed by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking.
The purpose behind creating a gold pegged cryptocurrency is to enable the younger crypto investors to better manage their assets as buying gold while is a good hedge against inflation is easier to buy as a digital token.
However, beyond the creation of the token, the company plans on also developing a wallet application for smartphones. Through this app, holders can make purchases at affiliated retail stores using ZPG.
To make sure ZPG is accessible to everyone ASAP, Mitsui has already set up a cryptocurrency exchange with Seven Bank which has been approved by the central governmentโs Financial Services Agency (FSA).
While Mitsui is preparing for the launch of their gold pegged stablecoin, Japan is also looking, to begin with, its second phase of experiments with Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) with the governor believing that the Bank of Japan might make an official decision on the issuance of CBDCs by 2026.
Recently, a former BOJ official, Hiromi Yamaoka also stated that CBDCs are not a good idea since he feels that applying negative rates to CBDC could damage the economy.
Given Japanโs no ban, no regulation, crypto forward-thinking, Mitsui could make an impact in bringing crypto to traditional investors with the ZPG.

Bubba got stuck in the mud here in 1998
Willard Airport
The airport gained some notoriety for a January 21, 1998, incident in which Air Force One became stuck in mud, requiring a backup aircraft to transport President Bill Clinton from a speaking engagement at the University of Illinois' Assembly Hall. The pilot opted to enter the main taxiway from the ramp using a feeder taxiway with an unusually large angle. Due to the wide turn, the right main gear left the taxiway and slipped into the soft turf, causing the aircraft to be lodged in the mud. The Air Force dispatched backup aircraft SAM26000, which first entered service during the Kennedy Administration and would be retired later in 1998

BOJ prepares emergency operation as long-term rates creep up
Central bank plans unlimited bond purchases after benchmark yield hits 6-year high
Upward pressure driving U.S. and European interest rates higher has reached Japan, with the benchmark 10-year yield nearing the threshold that could prompt the Bank of Japan to step in with an emergency market operation.
The yield on newly issued 10-year government bonds touched a six-year high of 0.20% at one point Friday, moving closer to the 0.25% upper target set by the central bank. If the yield moves further closer to the cap, the BOJ will likely carry out an operation to purchase an unlimited amount of bonds at a fixed rate to ease the pressure.
With the rate rising in the U.S. on Friday, the market sees the possibility of the 10-year yield moving closer to 0.25% soon.
By conducting an emergency operation for the first time in three and a half years, the BOJ plans to brush off market speculation that the central bank will be forced to follow its Western peers and tighten policy, and signal its commitment to monetary easing.
In the U.S., the 10-year yield climbed 10 basis points to 1.93% at one point to touch a two-year high on Friday. The jobs report and wage increases announced that day exceeded market expectations, fanning speculation that the Federal Reserve will raise rates at a faster pace than expected.
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde on Thursday said she is no longer ruling out a rate hike within the year, sending European bond yields higher.
Japan is now an outlier. With the 2% inflation target still out of reach, the BOJ is sticking with monetary easing. But speculation is rife among investors that the BOJ will eventually shift course to follow its Western peers, which in turn has put upward pressure on JGB yields.
Under a yield curve control scheme introduced in 2016, the BOJ is managing bond purchases to keep the 10-year yield at around 0%. But lately the BOJ has been allowing fluctuations of up to 25 basis points on either side of that to make sure bond market activity does not dry up.
The BOJ is expected to opt for an operation in which it will purchase an unlimited amount of government bonds at a set rate, like 0.25%. This will help ease the upward pressure on the yield. If the pressure does not ease right away, the BOJ will likely carry out multiple operations.
BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda has reiterated the bank will continue with powerful monetary easing measures. He does not foresee the rise in the Consumer Price Index reaching 2% anytime soon.
If the BOJ does not act when the yield surpasses 0.25%, the market will interpret that as allowing a rise in interest rates, spurring speculation about monetary tightening. Conducting an operation would thus serve to confirm the BOJ's unflagging commitment to monetary easing.

If you thought the FRB was screwed and in an untenable position the BOJ is many times worse as it's gov't debt has been negative (factoring in even the fake inflation #'s) for many years.
