Bird flu outbreaks put US poultry farms on high alert

USDA says 'highly pathogenic' avian flu cases have hit multiple states, including Indiana and Kentucky. U.S. poultry producers are on high alert after cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have cropped up in multiple states, sparking fears that further outbreaks could cause significant losses.

The United States Department of Agriculture confirmed Feb. 9 that a commercial turkey flock in Indiana was hit with avian flu, the first case in the U.S. since 2020. The entire flock of nearly 30,000 birds was euthanized in an effort to stop the spread.

Then on Feb. 14, the agency confirmed that a commercial flock of broiler chickens was hit with bird flu in Kentucky, and a backyard flock of mixed species fowl also tested positive in Virginia. Both flocks were culled.

Tom Super, senior vice president of the National Chicken Council, told FOX Business that while any detection of bird flu "in poultry is a concern and the industry remains on high alert," the U.S. "has the most robust monitoring and surveillance program in the world – and detailed plans are in place to control spreading among flocks and eliminate the virus completely."

National Turkey Federation Vice President of Communications Beth Breeding told FOX Business that producers "are focused on farm security every day" and that "members remain vigilant and practice all biosecurity protocols."

She said that "for farms within a 10km control zone of confirmed [bird flu] cases, regular testing is taking place to monitor the health of flocks." A spokesperson from the USDA told FOX Business that the agency recently expanded its wild bird surveillance after the first detection of HPAI in a wild bird in the U.S., and that the surveillance of wild birds ensures that both the agency and the poultry industry "are able to enhance biosecurity measures and rapidly respond to reduce the risk of disease spread." The spokesperson said that "bird owners (whether it’s commercial or backyard poultry, or pet or hobby birds), should take some simple steps to protect their birds from the virus: In addition to practicing good biosecurity, all bird owners should prevent contact between their birds and wild birds and report sick birds or unusual bird deaths to state or federal officials."

Driver in custody amid investigation at NAS North Island

A driver was taken into custody at the main entrance to Naval Air Station North Island Tuesday amid an investigation into materials found inside a vehicle, a U.S. Navy official said.

Around 9 a.m., security guards stopped a car at the gate on Third Street and inside, discovered materials that appeared to be for making explosives, Naval Base Coronado spokesman Kevin Dixon told FOX 5. No bombs were found. Naval Criminal Investigative Services took the driver into custody and were investigating the materials.

The main gate on Third Street and the outbound gate on McCain Boulevard were closed for the investigation, but since have reopened, the base said in a Facebook post. The gates on First Street and Ocean Boulevard remained open for the duration.

Closures remain at the commercial vehicle inspection lanes at the main gate. The visitor control center also is expected to remain closed until Wednesday, officials said.

From Credit Suisse to Goldman Sachs, investment banks say it’s time to buy Chinese stocks

More and more international investment analysts say it’s time to buy mainland Chinese stocks, ahead of expected government support for growth.

On top of the pandemic’s drag on the economy, heightened regulatory uncertainty since last summer has generally kept foreign investors cautious on Chinese stocks.

But that’s starting to change for some investment firms in the last several months.

In its global stock strategy report for 2022, Credit Suisse upgraded China to “overweight,” reversing a downgrade of the stocks about 12 months ago.

“Monetary policy is being eased [in China] while elsewhere it is being tightened,” its global strategist Andrew Garthwaite and his team wrote in the late January report. “Economic momentum is turning up.”

One of the early positive turns on mainland Chinese stocks came from BlackRock Investment Institute in late September. As 2022 got underway, other firms also made similar calls, while others remain neutral.

On the political front, Credit Suisse expects regulatory uncertainty to subside after a national parliamentary meeting in March, and remain muted — at least until after the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s 20th National Congress in the fourth quarter.
