Fed Postpones Today's Purchase Of Treasuries and MBS Due To "Technical Difficulties"
While it's not the first time that the NY Fed has experienced a major "technical glitch" preventing it from executing its daily open market purchase of Treasuries and MBS securities, the Fed sure could have picked a better day for a printer jam.
Moments ago, the NY Fed announced that "due to technical difficulties, today’s Treasury outright purchase operation - scheduled for 10:10 AM - will be rescheduled. It is now scheduled to take place Friday, February 25, 2022 at 10:10 AM. Additionally, today’s MBS outright purchase operations – scheduled for 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM - will also be rescheduled to Friday, February 25th, 2022 and Monday, February 28th, 2022 respectively. Information on Treasury securities operations and MBS purchase operations can be found on the New York Fed’s webpage. This does not impact any other operations scheduled for today." This is not the first time the Fed has had "technical issues", and the last time a POMO was postponed in mid-January, yields spiked higher, just as they have done today.
Some context: today the Fed was scheduled to purchase $6.225 billion in TSYs, which was the largest one-day purchase of the final month of QE. Almost as if the Fed is doing all it can to further destabilize the already shaky market mood. Taiwan reports 9 Chinese aircraft in its air defense zone
Taiwan's air force scrambled again on Thursday to warn away nine Chinese aircraft that entered its air defense zone, Taiwan's defense ministry said, on the same day that Russia invaded Ukraine, a crisis being watched closely in Taipei.
Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has complained of regular such missions by the Chinese air force over the last two years, though the aircraft do not get close to Taiwan itself. The number of aircraft involved was well off the last large-scale incursion, 39 Chinese aircraft on Jan. 23, and since then, such flybys have been sporadic with far fewer aircraft.
The ministry said the latest mission involved eight Chinese J-16 fighters and one Y-8 reconnaissance aircraft, which flew over an area to the northeast of the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands at the top end of the South China Sea.
Taiwanese fighters were sent up to warn the Chinese aircraft and air defense missiles were deployed to "monitor the activities," the ministry said, using standard wording for how Taiwan describes its response. Taiwan has been warily watching the Ukraine crisis, nervous that China may try to take advantage to move on the island. While Taipei has not reported any unusual movements by Chinese forces, the government has increased its alert level.
China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, and routinely condemns U.S. arms sales or other shows of support from Washington. Speaking in Beijing earlier on Thursday when asked about the new U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei reiterated that Taiwan was a "core issue" of China's and it would tolerate no foreign interference. "We urge the U.S. side to recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, stop interfering in China's internal affairs and stop playing with fire on the Taiwan issue," Tan said.
In the 12-page Indo-Pacific strategy overview issued earlier this month, the Biden administration vowed to commit more diplomatic and security resources to the region.
On Taiwan, Washington would work with partners inside and outside the region to maintain peace and stability in the strait dividing the island from China, it said.

Putin Thought of Everything – Except a Crash of 45 Percent on the Moscow Stock Exchange and Big Russian Companies Losing Half their Market Value
Donald Trump may think Russian President Vladimir Putin is a “genius” for his Ukraine strategy, but the shareholders of the largest publicly traded companies in Russia may have a different assessment today. After Putin ordered a wide scale invasion of Ukraine overnight, the Moscow Stock Exchange (MOEX) posted a notice that “it had suspended trading on all its markets until further notice.” The Russian oligarchs must have howled because a subsequent notice indicated it would restore trading at 10:00 a.m. Moscow time.
Shortly after the exchange opened, however, the U.S. dollar denominated RTS Index plunged by 50 percent and the MOEX Index had tanked by 45 percent. You can see where the indices are currently trading at this link.
The stock market pain spread across the largest publicly traded companies in Russia. Gazprom, one of the largest natural gas companies in the world, lost 54 percent during the worst part of morning trading. Rosneft, another large Russian energy company, slumped by as much as 59 percent. Novatek, Russia’s second largest natural gas producer lost 48 percent while one of the largest banks in Russia, Sberbank, plunged by as much as 47 percent.
The plunge in the stock market, together with Russia’s currency, the Ruble, hitting record lows against the Euro and the U.S. Dollar, brought in the Russian central bank, the Bank of Russia, to support the market and the currency. The Bank of Russia announced that it was banning short selling and was initiating “interventions in the foreign exchange market, extend the Lombard List [acceptable collateral for loans], and provide the banking sector with extra liquidity today.”
But the Russian central bank does not have unlimited money to support Putin’s military aggressions against a neighboring country. And with significantly broadened sanctions expected today from the U.S. and much of Europe, which are expected to further hit Russian banks and Russia’s ability to sell its debt, Putin may have created an unanticipated financial crisis at home instead of a muscular display of his military prowess.
The interventions by the Russian central bank had helped the Russian stock indices and major Russian companies trim losses somewhat by 3:20 p.m. Moscow time (7:20 a.m. in New York). (See graph below.) But what will happen when the new announcements of heavier sanctions hit the newswires throughout the day is impossible to predict.

Biden ratchets up Russia sanctions to pressure Putin on Ukraine
President Joe Biden said the U.S. will impose sanctions on Russia that will hamper its ability to do business in foreign currencies as President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine sparked the worst security crisis in Europe since World War II.
Biden promised to inflict a “severe cost on the Russian economy” in a speech from the White House on Thursday, hours after Russian tanks, troops and aircraft pushed through Ukraine. Russian forces neared the capital city of Kyiv and officials warned it could fall within hours.
Biden announced that the U.S. would sanction Sberbank Russia’s largest lender and four other financial institutions that represent an estimated $1 trillion in assets, as well as a broad swath of Russian elites and their family members. The United States and its allies will not bar Russia from the Swift international banking network because Europe does not want to undertake that action, Biden said-cause the money laudering stops then-DERP!!!! But the sanctions imposed Thursday against major Russian banks should have a similar effect and limit Russia’s ability to do business in dollars, Euros, and pounds, he said.
The U.S. also plans to impose new restrictions on Russia’s largest state-owned enterprises that will prohibit them from raising money from U.S. and European investors, Biden said.
The U.S. leader said sanctions were a long-term tool to pressure Putin and were never expected to prevent an attack. The penalties will “take time,” adding “he’s going to test the resolve of the West to see if we stand together and we will.”
But in launching Russia’s most sweeping military action in more than 70 years, Putin has defied global condemnation and new rounds of sanctions. Putin has threatened other countries that may interfere with his Ukraine offensive with historic consequences.
Putin’s audacity is a troubling development for Biden and European allies. The stakes are high for Biden, who has promised to uphold the post-war geopolitical order that Russia’s offensive now threatens.
To cushion the impact of the conflict and fresh sanctions, Biden said the U.S. is coordinating the release of strategic petroleum reserves with oil producing and consuming nations around the world.

Russian Billionaires Lose $39 Billion in a Day on Ukraine Attack
Russia’s wealthiest individuals were already feeling the squeeze from escalating tensions between the nation and Ukraine.
It got much worse for their net worth after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. In less than 24 hours, they lost $39 billion -- more than they had up to that point this year. The damage was across asset classes. Russia’s benchmark MOEX Russia Index closed 33% lower in Moscow, the fifth-worst plunge in stock market history in local currency terms. It marked the first time since 1987’s Black Monday crash that a decline of that magnitude hit a market worth more than $50 billion.

Japan will impose additional sanctions on Russia, including restrictions on chip exports, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Friday.
"The Ukraine invasion by Russia is a serious issue affecting international order that includes not only Europe but also Asia," Kishida told reporters in a news conference. Russia on Thursday launched a major invasion of Ukraine. Russia's attempts to "change the status quo by force," said Kishida, have been harshly criticized by the international community. The new measures against Russian individuals and organizations that Kishida announced include freezing assets and halting the issuance of visas, plus financial sanctions including asset freezes targeting Russian financial institutions.
Japan will also impose sanctions on exports to Russian military-related organizations, items on restricted lists based on international agreements, and exports of semiconductors and other general-purpose products to Russia. The announcement comes after leaders of the Group of Seven major economies held an emergency meeting via videoconference on Thursday in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In a joint statement, they criticized the invasion as a "serious violation of international law" and said Russia will face "severe and coordinated economic and financial sanctions." Kishida said the sanctions were determined after Japan closely exchanged information with the U.S., EU nations and other G-7 countries. "We can show the strength of the solidarity of the international community," said Kishida. Addressing concerns over energy security, Kishida said the sanctions on Russia "will not directly impede energy supply" and stressed that "there is no immediate impact on a stable supply of energy," explaining that the public and private sectors have 240 days' worth of oil reserves and two to three weeks' worth of liquid natural gas reserves. The invasion by a major power also has raised concerns over Taiwan. "It is important to send a message that we will not allow any attempt to change a status quo by force, by working together with the international community," Kishida said.

This just muh opinion based on over 3 decades of doing this (moar observation from 2014 on as I took muh pile and said fuck you very much) so not financial advice at all-do your own due diligence. What you want is physical silver...no ETF's or warehoused (stored on-site by a dealer or Co. that does this for large customers) as you will be in a very long line if you think you will get the metal that is represented by your ETF or contract to house your purchased metal. Remember that all markets are fake and price discovery is a nasty phrase on Wall Street. Anyhow..just remember that metals trade is many times worse in the manipulative tools used to control it and once you understand how it is done it makes it easier to"accept" how it is priced and controlled
A little moar on the metals and how they have traded. The obvious paper barrage on it dropped it back below the 200DMA so we've had one go at it and it is now back-filled last nights action and looking to repeat the performance back to the upper $25 range. What these tech traders look for is this type of action so they try not to get stuck "buying" a hot air rally that doesn't have any support. Tis has ahuge influence on where this pricng goes and the system KNOWS this. It is just like equity trading patterns and they also know where most retail people place orders and know exactly where to "takeit" to flush them out.
They are now stuck between being short and having to go long on the crossing of the 200D MA-this is just how they do it and it is not complicated. The most popular indicator (red line on cap #2) is the 200 Day Moving Average or MA. Think big gap ups in equity's based on some sort of news-and unless it is heavily shorted 9 times out of 10 they return to "fill the gap".
This is a pattern that is good to see but can be negated or created with a very small amount of contract purchase(s) and moar importantly sales on the COMEX with regards to this example. When you see these big drops in both Gold and Silver remember this: the contracts and not actual metals being traded-the entire COMEX is largely a paper-based system and very little actual commodities get traded in the physical form so always remember that.
Stonks are a little harder to do this as there is much moar participation and MUCH cheaper-see below on size of COMEX silver contract. What you want to see now is another run over that 200 day moving average and having it done in a decisive way back upwards on strong volume. What I've witnessed is that most trades get three times to breakout over any moving average and if they fail on the third time it is basically lights out and it heads back down. As it stands today the 200 DMA on it is $24.35 and the last trade on the Hong Kong Market is $24.28 so it is just below that. You can tell a big fight is going on with the On-Balance Volume or OBV (lime green arrow) as the number of contracts needed to control the price is increasing. Now the real BS here is that these contracts are nothing more than a right or promissory note to 'control' 5000oz of silver-based on the last price of $24.38 1 contract will cost you $121,400 plus any commissions so it is not cheap to play here. There is an option to have physical delivered for your purchased contracts (that is called Standing for Delivery) it is rarely ever done as if a big enough amount of contract holders actually did this it would break the COMEX-they know this. This was tried in the last big run up in Ag price where too many tried to hold contracts to force the COMEX to deliver the Physical (they don't and never have had it). As the price kept rising the margin requirements for holding large positions kept being raised (sometimes by as much as 25%) forcing those contract holders to pony up cash to continue to hold positions they had already paid for (using margin debt)....very BAD idea but they do it.

There were some who could do this but many could not so it produced an artificial liquidation of contracts-exactly what the system desired. The ones who could still remain in the game were offered cash payments to stand down-this is against the CFTC's own rules but that is another story. We'll see a ton of movement in the price of both %-wise but more so in Ag as it gets hits much moar so what has reversed to the upside is the Silver/Gold ratio-that is how many oz of silver you get for 1 oz of gold-it has been insane (in a good way if you believe that silver will eventually be priced based on is use as an industrial metal and real value as a storage of wealth) for a long time. It is now at 78.64 and has gotten as high as 128 in early 2020.
Typically you see the most action when the NYMEX opens but lately they have had London do the work of dropping millions of ozs-represented by 100's of contracts of created out-of-thin air on it. As I have stated before-NO ONE sells this way unless the intention is to suppress the price-that goes for all financial products not just this. Watch for the drops to occur closer to Tueday(s) as that is the weekly settlement day that is used until the next Tuesday...it is a lather,rinse repeat event.

They knew this system was rigged and they tried to force the COMEX into delivery but the big mistake they made was carrying too many contracts and not enough physical so the margin requirements were raised until they famously said "shut it down".
