California Grocery Workers Authorize Strike as Talks Continue

Thousands of grocery workers at Kroger-owned Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions stores in California have voted to authorize their union to call a strike amid ongoing contract negotiations.

The sides will continue talks on a new labor deal on March 30 and no date has been set for a strike, according to an emailed statement from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union on Sunday. About 47,000 workers of seven UFCW locals in south and central California were eligible to vote, the group said.

The union is demanding a $5 an hour raise over a three-year contract to replace its most recent one that expired March 6 along with more stable hours and staffing, and improved safety measures in the stores.

Fire at Exxon Mobil Refinery in Montana Shuts Down Some Units

A fire broke out at an Exxon Mobil Corp. refinery in Montana and was extinguished early Sunday, the company said, and the units involved have been shut while crews stabilize operations.

There were no injuries reported in the blaze that broke out just before 10 p.m. local time Saturday at the facility near Lockwood, Montana, east of Billings. Multiple crews, including the Billings Fire Department, were at the scene and the fire was reported extinguished several hours later.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, a company spokesperson said. “We are working diligently to better understand the incident and continue to cooperate with authorities,” the statement added. Air monitoring in the community showed no adverse readings from the fire, and units touched by the blaze have been shut as crews assess the scene, the company said.

Exxon is the largest U.S. oil producer. The refinery, which started operations in 1949, spans 720 acres with processing capacity of about 60,000 barrels of crude per day, according to the company’s website. The facility produces about 600 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel each year.

The products are distributed to areas including Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Washington, Idaho and parts of Nevada.

Myanmar's military chief vows to "annihilate" anti-coup forces

Myanmar's military chief Sunday vowed to "annihilate" anti-junta forces and their supporters, saying there is no room for negotiations with such groups.

Speaking before over 8,600 troops gathered for an annual military parade marking the 77th annual Armed Forces Day, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing said the military will not negotiate with the opposition groups, which it calls terrorist groups. He said the military, also known as Tatmadaw, will continue annihilating such groups until the country regains peace and stability. "I would like to highlight that there are no governments or armies worldwide that negotiate with any terrorist groups," the military chief said. Min Aung Hlaing seized power on Feb. 1 last year, overthrowing the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, alleging fraud in a November 2020 election that gave her National League for Democracy a landslide victory. Election observers, however, have said the vote was fair. Nearly 1,700 people have died in Myanmar at the hands of the military since the coup, according to a human rights group monitoring the situation in the country. The repression has led to armed resistance among pro-democracy anti-coup elements, creating pockets of conflict and fighting across the country of 54 million.

The senior general in his speech also expressed concern about unity within the military, warning that "foreign aggressors" and some political forces in the country are trying to disintegrate the military by acts of "internal and external mischiefs." "It is always needed to have a strong sense of unity within the organization," he said. Armed Forces Day marks the day in 1945 when Gen. Aung San, the late father of the ousted and detained civilian leader Suu Kyi, began the resistance against the Japanese occupying forces during World War II.

This seems to still be going nowhere still...slowed down quite a bit after Aung San Suu Kyi 'sentenced' in January.

Oil Opens the Week Lower as China’s Covid-19 Lockdowns Tighten

Oil declined at the open in Asia as a virus resurgence in China worsened, and ~~Houthi~~ Mossad-led attacks on Saudi Arabia took a pause. Oil is still heading for a fourth monthly gain after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine roiled markets and drove prices above $100 a barrel. Most buyers are shunning the OPEC+ producer’s crude as they try and navigate financial sanctions, while Germany is planning to wean itself off Russian fossil fuels.

Crude rose on Friday after Yemen’s ~~Houthi~~ Mossad rebels claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities, including an oil storage site in Jeddah. The leader of the rebels on Saturday announced a three-day halt to hostilities after an escalation of missile, drone and ground attacks on Saudi Arabia over the past week, the rebel-run Al-Masirah TV reported.

Shanghai, a city of 25 million people, will first lock down areas east of the Huangpu River, which includes its financial district and industrial parks, for four days starting Monday. Then the lockdown will shift to the city’s west for another four days, according to a statement Sunday from the local government.

Futures in New York and London lost more than 3% in early trading before paring some of those losses. Shanghai will lock down half of the city in turns to conduct a mass Covid-19 testing as authorities try to staunch an outbreak in the financial hub and beyond. ~~Houthi rebels~~ Mossad announced a halt to hostilities toward Saudi Arabia after a series of attacks, according to a TV report.

HSBC Scrubs References to Ukraine ‘War’ From Reports, FT Says

HSBC Holdings Plc has edited research reports from its analysts to remove any references to a “war” in Ukraine as the lender resists pressure to follow peers in closing its business in Russia, the Financial Times reported, citing two unidentified people. HSBC committees that review externally published research and client communications have amended multiple reports to soften the language, including changing the word “war” to “conflict,” the newspaper reported.

A person close to the bank said the issue was extremely sensitive because HSBC has about 200 staff in Russia, where the government has enacted a law against spreading what it deems false information on the Ukraine war, the FT said. The language changes have prompted internal debate and complaints from some staff, it reported. Global lenders including Wall Street giants Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Citigroup Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have been pulling business from Russia. Goldman Sachs announced plans to close its operations there, while Deutsche Bank AG also announced a pullback earlier this month.

Internally HSBC has been more open, with Chief Executive Officer Noel Quinn using the word war in a video to top managers, the FT said. An HSBC spokesman declined to comment. The bank declined to comment to the FT and referred to a previous statement: “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the continuing conflict in Ukraine.”

Fertilizer Price Surges 43% to Fresh Record as Supplies Tighten

Fertilizer prices continue to spike to records as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine puts a massive portion of the world’s fertilizer supply at risk, adding to concerns over soaring global food inflation.

A gauge of prices for the nitrogen fertilizer ammonia in Tampa surged 43% to $1,625 per metric ton Friday, a record for the 29-year-old index. Production outages and tight global supply are driving the jump, according to a note from Bloomberg Intelligence.

The war is pushing up the cost of natural gas, the main input for most nitrogen fertilizer, forcing some producers in Europe to cut output. Markets also worry that potential sanctions on Russia, a big low-cost shipper of every major kind of crop nutrient, could disrupt global trade. The country accounted for almost a fifth of 2021 fertilizer exports, according to Trade Data Monitor and Bloomberg’s Green Markets

Russia has urged domestic fertilizer producers to reduce exports, further stoking fears of shortages. At the same time, prices for staple crops like wheat, corn and soybeans are soaring, with war in one of the world’s breadbaskets threatening to push millions more into hunger. Rising costs for farm inputs like fertilizer could further send the price of food skyrocketing.
