Russia Added Yuan, Euro to Reserves Before War, Cut Dollar Share
Russia has enough holdings in yuan and gold even after the U.S. and its allies imposed sanctions on its reserves in dollars and other currencies, Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina said in her annual report to parliament Monday.
Continuing a multi-year effort to reduce exposure to the U.S. currency, the central bank cut the share of dollars in reserves to 10.9% as of Jan. 1 from from 21.2% a year earlier. But euro holdings rose to 33.9% from 29.2%, the central bank said.
Yuan holdings rose to 17.1% from 12.8% a year earlier, while gold was down slight at 21.5%.
The U.S. and its allies imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia following its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, including limits on the central bank’s reserves. Russian officials said the restrictions froze about half of its $642 billion in reserves.

Pakistan Opposition Leader Shahbaz Sharif Named New Prime Minister Amid Raging Pro-Khan Protests
After the dramatic weekend 'no confidence' vote ouster of Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan, described by he and his supporters as a foreign backed coup led covertly by the United States, the country's lawmakers convened Monday to choose a new prime minister.
They chose opposition lawmaker Shahbaz Sharif to replace Khan - the latter whose supports took to the streets Sunday night in various cities across the country, calling his ouster and replacement illegitimate. "Mr Shahbaz, 70, is the younger brother of three-times prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and led the bid by the opposition parties to remove Mr Khan," Sky News notes. Khan on Sunday rejected parliament's midnight no confidence vote to ouster him from the night before. "Pakistan became an independent state in 1947; but the freedom struggle begins again today against a foreign conspiracy of regime change," he wrote on Twitter. He called what's happening a power grab by an "imported government."
Many thousands have taken to the streets Sunday into early Monday, including in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar - where some instances roads were blocked - and even with pro-Khan demonstrations popping up in Dubai and London.
Multiple hundreds were observed gathered to protest in front of the London home of Nawaz Sharif as well, where supporters of Sharif clashed with the pro-Khan rally.
Pakistani citizens protest in favor of PM Imran Khan. They must realize the State Bank of Pakistan has created a roaring inflation that has opened the door for Khan’s opponents at home and abroad. Take a look.pic.twitter.com/fEGe3ob950 — Steve Hanke (@steve_hanke) April 11, 2022
Newly named PM Shahbaz Sharif has been a prominent opposition lawmaker since his election to parliament in 1990, having fled the country following the 1999 military coup, but returning in 2007.
On Monday as lawmakers appointed Sharif new prime minister, Khan issued a statement thanking his supporters for taking to the streets "against US-backed regime change".
However, he appears to be conceding given he changed his verified Twitter bio to the following: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf & former Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Thank you to all Pakistanis for their amazing outpouring of support & emotions to protest against US-backed regime change abetted by local Mir Jafars to bring into power a coterie of pliable crooks all out on bail. Shows Pakistanis at home & abroad have emphatically rejected this — Imran Khan (@ImranKhanPTI) April 10, 2022
His specifying "former" prime minister is being widely taken to mean he's conceding defeat, or at least not willing to risk civil unrest in pushing back against his ouster too hard (or perhaps he was paid off handsomely?).
It's believed his relations with the country's powerful military (which has long been the core of Islamabad's 'deep state') have soured, also amid surging inflation and a plummeting rupee, earning charges of severe economic mismanagement from the political opposition and widespread public anger. In particularl he's said to have clashed with Pakistan's Army Chief as well as the foreign office.
PTI supporters protest in London Hyde Park in solidarity with imran khan pic.twitter.com/WS1G37J8xa — Murtaza Ali Shah (@MurtazaViews) April 10, 2022
Khan had met with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Feb.24 - a mere hours before Russian tanks rolled across the border into Ukraine. Despite the Feb.23-24 visit being long in planning, and primarily aimed at boosting energy and trade ties between the two countries, the poor timing served to spotlight the controversy of the visit and warming Pakistan-Russia relations.

U.S. Dollar Index hits fresh 2-year high as yields rise and yen keeps taking a hit
The dollar touched another two-year high on Monday, pummeling the yen, as yields continued to rise on expectations for further rate increases by the Federal Reserve.
The U.S. Dollar Index DXY, 0.07% briefly broke above 100 in overnight trading, the highest since May 10, 2020, and was up around 0.2%. The greenback also hit another seven-year high against the yen USDJPY, 0.94%, with the Japanese currency depreciating to around 125.36 per dollar; that’s the weakest since it reached an intraday level of 125.65 in June 2015, according to FactSet.
Expectations for higher U.S. rates are rippling throughout the financial system ahead of Tuesday’s consumer-price index report for March, which is expected to show an annual headline rate above 8%. The impact is being felt in everything from rising mortgage rates and car loans to a continued selloff in stocks on Monday. The dollar tends to benefit from higher rate expectations relative to other countries like Japan, where policy makers are more concerned about the risks to the economic recovery and are still clinging to easy monetary policy. As of Monday morning, Treasury yields were mostly higher, led by intermediate and long-end rates, while all three major stock indexes DJIA, -0.65% SPX, -1.27% COMP, -1.85% were down.

Nawaz Sharif To Return To Pakistan From London Next Month: Party Leader
Pakistan Political Crisis: Several corruption cases have been launched by the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan against Nawaz Sharif. Islamabad:
Deposed Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to return from London next month after Eid, a senior PML-N leader has said, amid a whirlwind of political developments that have embroiled the country following Imran Khan's ignominious ouster from power.
Mian Javed Latif said a decision on PML-N supremo and the three-time prime minister Sharif's anticipated return will be discussed with the coalition partners.
All decisions would be first brought up with constituent parties of the coalition, The Express Tribune newspaper quoted him as saying.
Eid will be celebrated in the first week of May.
Several corruption cases have been launched by the government of Prime Minister Khan against the 72-year-old supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz since his ouster from the office by the Supreme Court in July 2017 in the Panama Papers case.
Sharif in November 2019 left for London after the Lahore High Court granted him a four-week permission allowing him to go abroad for his treatment. He had given an undertaking to the Lahore High Court to return to Pakistan, citing his record to face the process of law and justice within four weeks or as soon as he is declared healthy and fit to travel by doctors. Sharif was also given bail in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was serving seven-year imprisonment in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail.
Commenting on the political uncertainty in the country, Latif said the coalition government will not last longer than six months and the only solution to the prevailing woes was to hold fresh elections. “However, there was this task of election reforms that had to be done prior to elections,” he said.

White House says Biden has no plans to travel to Kyiv
President Biden has no plans to travel to war-torn Ukraine, despite Republican criticism for not visiting the country after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a surprise visit to the capital of Kyiv this weekend. “We are not currently planning a trip by the president of the United States to Ukraine,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. “What is most important to the Ukrainian leadership is that we are expediting weapons and getting them the security systems they need and that is what we are focused on.” On Saturday, Mr. Johnson made a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two walked through Kyiv’s streets, where Mr. Johnson showed solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Republicans quickly savaged Mr. Biden, suggesting that he wasn’t showing the same level of support for Ukraine as Mr. Johnson. “Boris Johnson went to Kyiv this weekend. Joe Biden went on his 32nd weekend vacation to Delaware,” Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the Republican National Committee, tweeted Sunday.

Looks like lather, rinse, repeat on DOW (cough NY FRB Chicago 'office' >>124181, >>124182, >>132692, >>132725 all pb ) because four minutes after Yerp closed (11:34am EST) there was a big chunk thrown in at market of 4.69M shares and then it went sideways after that-same thing on SP500 at exactly same time 17.20m shares 'dropped' in at market. The bigger chunks earlier look smaller because a ton of volume came in towards the close and those started showing up approximately 1 hour before the close at 3pm EST. Big short cover at 3:58pm on DOW (for the biggest pile of the day of 11.68m) and same on SP500 with 81.28m. There were probably some longs thrown in there too so not all short covering but smart to do at the close since the squeezes that have been habbening courtesy of the NYFRB Chicago 'office' have been wiping out any of the follow through early on.
Elon gave TWTR the FU by refusing the BoD seat (which means he is going to by moar shares-he could have easily done that via proxy) and it was down about 6% early on only to 'magically' reverse and ending the day +1.69%. The 30 yr was on life support all day and as all that volume showed up on the indices it improved. Meanwhile the 30Y mortgage rate hit 5.25% today - the highest since 2009! See ZH chart cap #3 for the treasury complex
And all this Treasury movement has shifted the rate rise/cut cycle from 3 (starting in 2023) to just 2 being 'priced in'.
And the Rouble was dropped like a glass-jaw boxer today and following through on fridays drop see cap #4-which also helps the USD so you've got the yen and the Rouble on devalue mode which is not insignificant-another prop job for the USD.

China is slashing liquefied natural gas purchases as soaring global prices deepen import losses and pandemic lockdowns throttle domestic demand. Imports in the first quarter fell 14% from the same period last year, according to shipping data, and private companies are spurning offers to use once-highly coveted slots at state-owned receiving terminals. Consultancy Wood Mackenzie Ltd. said it recently revised down its gas demand forecast for the country through 2026 due to economic pressures and high prices.

Former Managing Partner Of Manhattan Investment Advisory Firm Sentenced To 12 Years For Defrauding Investors In An Over $120 Million Ponzi-Like Scheme
Damian Williams, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that DAVID HU, former managing partner and chief investment officer of the Manhattan-based investment advisory firm International Investment Group (“IIG”), was sentenced today to 12 years in prison for his role in an over $120 million scheme to defraud IIG’s clients and investors. HU pled guilty in January 2021 to investment adviser fraud, securities fraud, and wire fraud offenses. U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein announced today’s sentence, which will be formally imposed following the conclusion of forfeiture and restitution proceedings in the case.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “David Hu shirked his fiduciary responsibilities and defrauded IIG funds and investors for more than a decade. Hu’s lies caused millions of dollars of losses. Hu mismarked millions of dollars of loan assets, falsified paperwork to create fake loans, sold overvalued and fake loans, used the proceeds from those sales to pay off earlier investors, and falsified paperwork to deceive auditors and avoid scrutiny. Today’s sentence sends the message that brazen fraud does not pay and will be appropriately punished.”
According to the Information and based on statements made and documents filed in federal court in this case: HU and co-conspirator MARTIN SILVER founded IIG in 1994. HU was a managing partner and the chief investment officer of IIG. IIG, an SEC-registered investment adviser, provided investment management and advisory services, including for three private funds that it operated: (1) the IIG Trade Opportunities Fund N.V. (“TOF”); (2) the IIG Global Trade Finance Fund, Ltd. (“GTFF”); and (3) the IIG Structured Trade Finance Fund, Ltd. (“STFF”). IIG also advised the Venezuela Recovery Fund (“VRF”), a fund that managed the remaining assets of a failed Venezuelan bank (VRF, together with TOF, GTFF, and STFF, the “IIG Funds”). In March 2018, IIG reported to the SEC that it had approximately $373 million in assets under management.
IIG advertised itself as specializing in global trade financing, particularly in providing trade finance loans to small and medium-sized businesses. IIG’s principal investment advisory strategy, including with respect to the IIG Funds, was investing in trade finance loans that it also originated. Trade finance loans are used by small and medium-sized companies, typically exporters and importers, to facilitate international trade. IIG’s purported expertise was in trade finance loans to borrowers located in Central or South America, and in a variety of industries, with a stated focus on “soft commodities,” such as coffee, agriculture, fishing, and other food products. IIG’s trade finance loans were purportedly secured by collateral, such as the underlying traded goods, assets held by the borrowers, or expected payments by third parties.
Investments in TOF, STFF, and GTFF were marketed by IIG to institutional investors, such as pension funds, hedge funds, and insurers. In offering memoranda and communications with investors, IIG advertised strict risk controls, such as promises to use diligence to carefully select borrowers or issuers with trusted management and marketable assets, and portfolio concentration limits based on borrower, developing country, and industry.
IIG purported to value the trade finance loans in the IIG Funds on a regular basis. IIG and, in turn, HU, received a performance fee with respect to the IIG Funds, as well as a management fee, which was calculated as a percentage of the assets under management held in the Funds.
